       ANOTHER new guy? Geez....

       Hey all!
My name is George Benton LaFleur & I live in Frisco, TX. near
       Stonebriar Mall.
       I currently have a 2000 Honda Prelude (bad-economy daily
driver), but plan on getting a pre-owned NSX in the near
       future...
I've been as active as I can be in the local Ferrari group &
exotic car scene in the Dallas area for many years and
previously owned an 1981 308 GTSi.
I currently work in the automotive performance parts industry
doing Marketing / Promotions & Special Account / Outside Sales
for Top Speed PRO 1 Auto Accessories. I've previously been in
finance & banking for 11+ years doing consumer, commercial,
auto, & mortgage lending...so I'm always happy to field
       questions in this arena.
Not married, no kids, no real girlfriend at this time, live in a
house in Frisco, and have a dog (Beagle) & a cat.
Oh yeah, I'm into diecast car collecting too (exotics mostly).
       Cheers,
       GBL1

Yes: you will need a Master's degree in Finance - from Harvard -
just to qualify for a part-time, bi-lingual bank teller job!
Seriously, so many of the industry positions are VERY
sales-focused now-a-days. A banker was once a position of some
prestige, now they're glorified Walmart greeters forced to
pounce of every customer that walks in the door to attempt to
extract as much new business from each one as possible and
over-suggest every product possible.... "Would you like fries
       with that?"
Really, before I wear out my soap box of ranting, maybe I should
first clarify, what specified area of finance are you
       considering?
Private Banking, Private Equity, Venture Capital, Stock
Brokerage, Accounting (accounting leads to CFO...this position
can easily lead to CEO), etc... are still high-earning career
positions, but mortgage & the collective term 'financial
advisor' are often front-line sales-goon type jobs...you might
as well be a used car salesman for as much as you'll struggle.
Tell me more about what field of finance you're thinking about
so I could better answer the question.

I'm hoping personal finance will float my boat. Like working for
AmeriPrise. Small business explorations would be a second option
       as well.

I can put you in touch with a buddy of mine that worked for
Ameriprise for a few years...he can give you the inside scoop on
       the company.
What I do know about them, from another friend that worked there
when it was formerly American Express Financial, was that you
better have some money socked aside to pay your bills for awhile
before counting on making any money there. Not sure if that's
still the way it is, but I do know that it takes A LOT of hard
work to make it in that company/industry....LOTS of competition
with not enough client's to go around.
Let me know if you want to talk with a guy that just left
Ameriprise (last year?), to go to a competing firm. He's not a
disgruntled ex-employee, he just felt he found a better
opportunity...but again, he could probably answer many questions
for you & give you some helpful direction.
His name is Matt Wilson...his number is 469-774-1062.
       I hope that helps.

Thank you, but I actually talked to a guy that said he could
probably get me an internship next summer at AmeriPrise. He's an
independt contractor, owns his own franchise of Ameriprise, but
he worked for at least 5 years at AmeriPrise after being an
       insurance salesman.

Yes...I know, I need to get out to one asap. I live in Frisco,
       so it's a bit of a drive for me...plus, Sunday nights I'm
usually settled in at home getting ready for the week.
Let me see what I can do about coming out this coming
Sunday...as long as it doesn't involve a trip to downtown Fort
Worth for free beer (THAT would not make for an easy drive
       home...) :)
