She had never tried something of this nature and yet I
immediately felt that I was with Lea, that she gave herself over
to love with her eyes closed and her spirit relaxed. An hour
later, at the moment when – in this patio that I begin to
inhabit – the incense and the candle were consumed, in unison, a
bright green hummingbird with a thin and long red beak entered
my old house, fluttered and perched once, twice in the palm of
my son's hand, cupped like a nest.
Then they told me that at that moment Lea was not there where

were healing her with their hands,
that she had gone far away and it took her a long time of
whispers and pampering to return to her body, open her eyes, sit
up). 3. It rains hard, on the fifth day of this late and
prolonged Santa Rosa storm. It's the first time I've heard rain
in this house. The roof is made of sheet metal and resonates, a
pounding that is sometimes thunderous, sometimes soft, that lets
you feel the variations in intensity of the falling water. The
drops on the glass draw a filigree pattern, and immediately run,
destroying any shape.

I have been living in this little house for a month now, just a
month. Little by little, I have been learning to recognize its
nocturnal noises: the garbage collection truck every morning,
the neighbor's garage door on the other side of the kitchen wall
at midnight. What will be heard tonight among so much water? The
next morning, after a week of rain, the sky clears after the
storm. The plants in the tiny garden are happy, shiny and a
thousand green, grateful for the water that erased the dust and
sawdust that dulled them after so many days of work by
bricklayers, blacksmiths and carpenters.
