When asked if he had thought about evacuating to western
Ukraine, Oleh responded rhetorically: “And where would I go?
After a while I stopped being afraid. If I have to be hurt, so
be it. Volunteers Since Russia invaded Ukraine at the end of
February, homeless people, unemployed singles, those living on
social benefits, the elderly, those with serious mental
illnesses, and the undocumented have found themselves in a
vulnerable situation. But even in unimaginable circumstances,
kyiv residents have shown great empathy for the most vulnerable
and organized to provide help.
As Mykola Fedorchenko, 45, told me while Phone Number List

in line for a free meal at the
Chornomorka restaurant in the city center: “It is impossible to
starve in Kiev; "You would have to work hard." In March, the
restaurant chain began a project to distribute meals every
Sunday, delivering around 1,000 to 1,500 portions each week.
Part of that food also goes to military personnel and
territorial defense units. Chornomorka's Sunday meals are one of
many food aid projects – from vegan kitchens to initiatives by
the Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches – that popped up in the
Ukrainian capital as the Russian invasion continued.

Ironically, at the same time, a number of soup kitchens that
operated in Kiev before the war had to temporarily suspend their
work, including the vegan cooking initiative "Solidarity
Kitchen", run by left-wing groups, and the initiative "Help a
homeless person". Olha Romenska, one of the founders of this
initiative, told openDemocracy that this project has recently
returned to delivering food in the central neighborhood of
Podil: "Since February 24, the number of attendees at this place
has been reduced by half . But while we were taking a break, The
initiative also manages a shelter with 14 beds, which has
continued to operate without interruption. Hostel residents hand
out food every day at the Olimpiiska station of the kyiv metro.
