Sterling Result in Clippers Saga.

Allow me to be blunt. I will be doing opinion pieces. I
expected to wait a week and blog a response to the first round
of the NFL draft. Seemed like an easy way of spending a
Thursday night. Then this last weekend happened and the NBA’s
most controversial owner (sorry Cuban) gave us the evidence
needed to finally get rid of the last of the old theory owner
from the modern American landscape of pro sports. Donald
Sterling is everything wrong with an owner in sports. He comes
straight out of a bad 90s basketball movie that decided that it
didn’t need to be original, it just had to be unrealistic and
hire a woman to play the head coach to sell tickets to a bad
story.
The Clippers are the worst franchise in the landscape. This
includes franchises like the Nationals (Expos previously),
Cardinals (outside one Super Bowl appearance a few years ago had
a 70 year drought) and yes, even my Seattle Mariners that in
almost 40 years of existence, have only 3 division titles. They
started in upstate New York. The moved, not once, but twice in a
15 season stretch. Once to San Diego and then to LA even though
the league didn’t approve of the sale. The owner at the time,
Donald Sterling…
Yep, that one, sued the NBA to allow them to share LA with the
Lakers. He won. They didn’t fight it, and he got his own part
of the big time. The irony is, they were never big time.
Floundering draft picks, little brother status (like they should
have being there around two different dynasties), and an owner
straight out of a 1946 Major League Baseball flick. The man
though, even in which I don’t know him personally, is and was
scum. He uses underhanded tactics in every business venture he
owns. We all have now heard about the large lawsuit for
discrimination in allowing people to move in as tenants in some
apartments he owns based on race.
It wasn’t the shock of listening to the TMZ audio. It was with
how much casualness was in his voice when he said it. He talked
as if it is how it should be. You are around me, no hanging out
with those dark skinned people. I don’t care if you screw them,
just don’t be photographed. So, basically, he was Okaying
someone to behind closed doors having relations with another
race, but don’t let everyone know you do it.
The person he told this to, was (and I assume it is over now)
his mistress who is half-black but shares a lighter skin tone
with her Latino half. She is that exotic beauty that leaves
yourself mesmerized and hoping that someday you too could have
enough coin to be seen on your arm. But, this wasn’t someone to
him, he’d ever want to be more than seeing. This was someone
exotic but not white.
I like many old school beliefs. This is definitely not one of
them. Being a man in his 30s who has slept with many different
types of women, I find the most inexcusable thing in this whole
situation of how he believes the other owners would think of him
if they now his MISTRESS was screwing around with a black dude.
He insinuated that other owners don’t want this out.
Now, I am by no means taking a word of what he said with a grain
of salt, but the mere hint of that is something the NBA couldn’t
ignore. Those words alone doomed his fate more than any
rhetoric that came from the conversations that were released.
Commissioner Adam Silver did the correct answer for the
franchise, the players, the staff, and most importantly, the
fans. This man needed to be gone. I am not going to say
congrats to Silver yet, he has many issues to fix. But at least
for once, the NBA is attempting to fix its bad image. Even if
it took way too long to come to the realization that everyone
underneath an owner already knew.
