Theresa May is facing a mounting backlash over her
"catastrophic" election campaign after an exit poll suggested
that her snap election gamble had failed to pay off.
The Conservatives are set to be the largest party but without an
overall majority according a joint BBC/Sky/ITV exit poll, which
indicated the Tories will win 314 seats and Labour 266.
The poll suggest Britain is heading for a hung parliament, with
Conservatives 12 seats short of the 326 they need for an
absolute majority in the Commons.
Senior Conservatives said this morning that she had made
"fundamental strategic errors" and said that her closest aides
should be "banished" from Downing Street.
They complained that the campaign had been centred around a
"cult of personality" and "central control", adding: "It has
completely blown up in our face".
One senior Tory told The Telegraph: "This is bad, it's worse
than bad. Her advisers should walk out of the door now never to
return, regardless of the final result.
They should be banished forever. "Can she hang on? She [Theresa]
has zero credibility if this exit poll is correct.
"The very best we can get tonight is to end up where we were.
The cult of personality and central control has completely blown
up in our face."
George Osborne, the former Chancellor who was sacked by Mrs May,
said that if the exit poll is accurate she would not survive.
The pound plunged following the shock exit poll- sterling fell
over 1.5 per cent to 1.27 US dollars following the poll, which
shows the Conservatives are set to be the largest party but 12
short of the 326 required for a parliamentary majority.
There should be a steady trickle of results until about 2am when
declarations should start to come in thick and fast from across
the UK.
The main wave of results is expected to start at about 3am with
the overall picture likely to be clear by about 5am."

This is one of the problems with the media; they invent crises
where none need to exist. Most democratic countries manage
perfectly well with no single party having an overall majority.
For five years the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats formed a
coalition government between 2010 and 2015 and for all its
faults it worked reasonably well; certainly better than the two
years of a small Conservative majority that followed it.
The French, Germans, Italians, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese,
Greeks and so on seem perfectly capable of managing without
needing an absolute majority in Parliament.
The problem is threefold.
1 - Theresa May was guided by hubris in calling an unnecessary
General Election - history shows that those Prime Ministers who
do so always lose - Baldwin in 1924, Attlee in 1951, Wilson in
1970, Heath in 1974 and now May in 2017.
2 - We are engaged in complex and difficult negotiations to
withdraw from the EU and the Prime Minister and most of her
Cabinet did not WANT us to leave the EU. That in itself makes
things difficult.
3 - The Labour Party is led by a man who has never held public
office, who is a left-wing mirror image of Trump, who has
consistently been a SUPPORTER of leaving the EU yet who has a
Shadow Cabinet dominated by those who did NOT want to leave.
It is hardly surprising that the situation is complex and
difficult.
Frankly, neither May nor Corbyn is up to the job and I find it
difficult to think of many politicians who are. Among the Tories
I can just about stomach Davis and Fox and (if she was an MP
rather than an MSP) Ruth Davidson; among the Labour Party I like
Frank Field, Gisela Stuart and Caroline Flint and though I
dislike her intensely as a person I admire Yvette Cooper's
intelligence. Among the Lib Dems the choice is very poor - Vince
Cable is too old, too arrogant and too bigoted a Remainer; Ed
Davey has lost his cojones; Jo Swinson is lightweight; and none
of the others inspire much confidence.
I am a perpetual floating voter (swing voter) and I always vote
on the basis of who would do the LEAST harm if they got in!
A choice of evils!

I completely understand voting on the least harm.
That is what many of us tried to convince Sanders voters when it
was down to Trump v. Clinton.
However as for Spain.
Though this should be a sep. topic, in short, Catalonia's
separatist government has staged a referendum on leaving Spain -
against the wishes of the national authorities. With a
population of 7.5 million, its capital is the proud city of
Barcelona.
I know you know this.
So Spain is not just moving along just fine right now.
