       The silence over Catalonia

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Recently the government of Catalonia - a province of Spain -
tried to hold a referendum on independence.
The Spanish Government first arrested the Prime Minister of
Catalonia for treason and then when his successor pressed ahead
with the referendum they sent Spanish police in to STOP people
voting. The police dragged ballot boxes out of polling stations,
beat up protestors viciously - one video shows a Spanish
policeman methodically breaking a woman's fingers one by one -
and enraged even OPPONENTS of independence.
The response in the media has been embarrassingly muted and the
condemnation from the EU has been non-existent.

       Agreed.
Those who complain about the press in the US should look at
       Catalonia.
And those who allege our elections are "rigged" again should
       look at Catalonia.

The question is not whether or not Catalonia SHOULD be
       independent.
It is whether or not the lawfully elected government of the
region - who won 48% of the vote in the elections - should be
allowed to hold a referendum on the subject.
Now the Spanish Constitution makes any attempts to secede from
       Spain high treason.
So they arrested the Prime Minister of Catalonia for calling for
a referendum - not even organising one, simply advocating one -
and then when his successor again asked for permission to hold
one and was denied he went ahead and tried to hold one anyway.
Then the Spanish police went in with brutality reminiscent of
       Gonzales' GAL or Franco's police.
And the EU has signally FAILED to say a single WORD of
       condemnation for Spain.

       I had thought of Franco.
I had also thought of where is the EU.
So not only is the media mum about the situation...the EU is
       MIA.
