       You Tube video/microphone issues

I am trying to make a video to post on YouTube.
I have a microphone which is attached to my laptop and which I
am assured by diagnostics is 'working properly.'
But when I try to record anything it appears fine but there is
       total silence on playback.
I have checked volume, mute, all the obvious possible mistakes.
       Nothing appears to work.
       Any suggestions, please?
