Matthew Chapter 1. 1. The book of the generation of Jesus
Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Matthew begins the book by showing that Christ by nature was of
King David and Abraham's bloodline and then furthers his
testimony by detailing the family tree which would be born into.
18. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his
mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together,
she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19. Then Joseph
her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a
public example, was minded to put her away privily. 20. But
while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord
appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David,
fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is
conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21. And she shall bring
forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall
save his people from their sins. 22. Now all this was done,
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the
prophet, saying, 23. Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and
shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel,
which being interpreted is, God with us. 24 Then Joseph being
raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him,
and took unto him his wife: 25. And knew her not till she had
brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
1. Now the birth of Jesus was on this wise....As follows, in
this manner
2. When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph....The word
"Espoused" is different than out word Engaged. Under Jewish laws
and customs being espoused is similar to Marriage. Under Jewish
Laws and Customs, the man and woman would attend a betrothal
ceremony where they voice their consent to marry but the
betrothal could last a year before the man could actually take
possession of his bride; during this time period, the bride
would remain at her father's house.
3. Before they came together, she was found with child of the
Holy Ghost.
We know by the previous statements, that Mary and Joseph
were espoused but here we learn that before the espousal was
completed, Mary was found pregnant by the Holy Ghost. What is
the Holy Ghost? Its the 3rd Member of the Godhead...GOD the
Father+GOD the Son+ God the Holy Ghost
(1st John 5:7. For there are three that bear record in
heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these
three are one.)
4. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to
make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily
Joseph was a man of God who practiced the Mosaic law and
followed the traditions of Jewish custom but his love for Mary
inspired him to stone her in private to spare her the pubic
shame of being an adulteress.
(Deuteronomy 22: 23. If a damsel that is a virgin be
betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and
lie with her; 24. Then ye shall bring them both out unto the
gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they
die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and
the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife: so thou
shalt put away evil from among you)
5. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of
the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son
of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that
which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall
bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he
shall save his people from their sins.
Here in the opening words of the New Testament, God (On
Time as Always) tells Joseph and the world that Mary has been
blessed to bring forth into the world the Promised Messiah of
the Old Testament and His Purpose of Human Birth is to Save the
World.
6. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was
spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin
shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall
call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
Here Matthew reaffirms that Jesus is the Promised Messiah
foretold by the Prophet Isaiah 7:14 ( Therefore the Lord himself
shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear
a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.)
The sign of hope, peace and eternal life has been here for over
two thousands years; this hope did not come from science,
education, religion and politics; it came by the Love of God who
sent His only begotten son to save the world.....Truly, God is
With Us!
