       Happy Day of the Dude

       From Fat Tuesday to The Day of the Dude. From jambalaya to White
       Russians, this is quite a week for holidays. And today is my
       favorite: The Day of the Dude.
       On March 6, 1998 The Coen brothers unsheathed The Big Lebowski,
       starring Jeff Bridges as Jeff Lebowski, The Dude. The reception
       for this film was like the film itself, cool. The Big Lebowski
       only grossed 5 million its opening weekend and eventually did
       only slightly better than breaking even. Reviews for this story
       of a bowling slacker were underwhelming but Chicago’s Roger
       Ebert gave it 3 out 4 stars.
       Like a tannin-rich red wine, The Big Lebowski’s reputation has
       improved with the passing years.
       More than a film, The Big Lebowski has become a way of life.
       There are Lebowski Festivals. There are adherents to Dudeism, a
       Lebowski-based religion. Former Sun-Times columnist Cathleen
       Falsani wrote a wonderful book about spirituality entitled, The
       Dude Abides: The Gospel According To The Coen Brothers.
       My own affection for the movie has gathered with such momentum
       that I can be Shawshanked any time I pass a channel where I hear
       John Goodman say, “Smokey, this is not ‘Nam; this is bowling.
       There are rules.”
       Or the dude confronting the Big Lebowski, “This rug I had, it
       really tied the room together.”
       And if you worship at the altar of the Duderino, you’ll need
       some hymns.
       The First Edition – “I Just Dropped In”. Folks, I am not making
       this up. This psychedelic classic features the vocals of one
       Kenny Rogers. Yes. That Kenny Rogers. The song for the Dude’s
       hallucinatory unconsciousness.
       Creedence Clearwater Revival – “Looking Out My Back Door”. A
       reminder. Marijuana smoking and driving don’t mix.
       The Eagles – “Peaceful Easy Feelin’”. In spite of the Dude’s
       penchant for “takin’ er easy,” he does not ease into his happy
       place as long as the Eagles can be heard. Never tell a cab
       driver what music to play. They have enough problems without you
       playing program director.
       Steely Dan – “Any Major Dude Will Tell You”. How in the world
       did the Coen Brothers miss this one? Or maybe the famously
       prickly dudes in the Dan were not enthusiastic contributors.
       Mott The Hoople – “All The Young Dudes”. Whenever I play the
       clip where Jeff Lebowski explains his sobriquet, I like to
       follow it with this number.
       The best part of The Big Lebowski in 2014? It’s on cable all the
       time. And if you have Comcast, it’s probably On Demand.
