What, back then made Russia a bigger enemy of ours than the two
countries our troops were fighting in?
And what about reclaiming the Ukraine, (something a substantial
number of Ukrainians seem to want- see below) makes them an
enemy of ours now?
Thousands of people marched through the streets of the city on
Saturday carrying enormous Russian flags and chanting “Fascism
will not pass!” Dobrynya, the organizer, said her greatest
concern was the role of Right Sector in the new government.
“We’re supposed to accept these radicals deciding who is going
to rule Ukraine? That can’t happen. So thank God we have these
wonderful guardians now,” she said, gesturing toward the
battalion of Russian marines who were guarding the Crimean
parliament building.
In four other cities of eastern Ukraine, major demonstrations
called for Russia to send similar contingents to protect them
from the “fascists.” Now, with the approval of his obedient
legislature, Putin seems to ready to oblige, surely comforted by
the fact that cheering crowds would come out to greet the
Russian tanks if they do roll over the border into eastern
Ukraine.

I'm not posting this to suggest Bush was weak BTW. He had no
trouble invading countries at the drop of a hat.
Rather that our response, or lack of, really does not matter
to Putin. He's hellbent on regaining superpower status and that
only happens when he blatantly and publicly defies the other
superpower.
There is literally nothing the US can do short of military
intervention, which isn't happening. Bush knew it back then,
Obama knows it now.
I'm curious exactly what consequences the Conservatives expect
the USA to impose?
They expect the very thing that sounds good, but is the most
impractical to impose. Anything to make the President appear to
be completely wrong. I am getting tired of it going that way,
and wish the Republicans would have better ideas for policy that
stopping what ever else is suggested.

The irony of knowing that 100 years ago a similar confrontation
not too far from where this is happening now was the start of
WW1. I find this whole situation a lot more unnerving than most.
Ad to that we have a president who words do not carry any
strength and this scares the shit out of me. I can only hope
Kerry is capable of working some magic, Barack sure won't.

This is the perfect time to dramatically decrease our military
isn't it?

Do you think it would change anything if we doubled our
military? Tripled it? Putin's on a mission here that sabre
rattling won't change.

I don't think it was the size or lack of size of the military,
but more the lack of testicular virility our current president
shows that Putin sees as our weakness, which allows him to make
such bold moves.

I tend to agree. He is however doing what a good liberal is
known for. He's throwing money at the problem, sending the
Ukraine a billion dollars. That'll scare him.

This morning on the Today show they asked some Obama official (I
was brushing my teeth so I was not paying attention to the early
part of the discussion) what Geo things that Obama could
guarantee. The one thing I heard him say MONEY. Like always
it's the one thing we can always promise

I agree, we should remove this feckless, weak President, but who
do you replace him with, and what should they be doing to Putin?
How should we display our testicular virility?
