Bitter cold

OK, I get it. Monday is going to be cold. But come on, school
was closed already, yesterday. I received an email stating that
our local Pick n Save is going to close. This weather has been
around off and on forever. Do you ever recall such a big deal
and so much panic being instilled in the general population from
a cold snap?
At the risk of sounding like my parents and grand parents, I
remember having to walk to school backwards (not uphill either
way) because the wind chill (which I don't think was measured
then) was such that walking into the wind was too cold.
Do you have a cold weather story to tell? Are we being too wussy
because of the weather?
I'm still smoking a sirloin tip roast tomorrow despite the cold.
I have found though that when it gets way below zero, -10 to
-15 I have to start my grill with starter fluid. My heating rod
doesn't seem able to get the pellets hot enough to start the
pellets on fire.

I remember when I was 12 I had a diary. In it several times that
winter I stated that my friend and I were going to walk to the
grocery store and it was 20 below. The only time parents let
kids stay inside when I was growing up was if it was raining.
Being the odd creature that I am I always find it kind of
amusing that weather can get that cold. I laugh about it and
soon it is over.

According to historical stats, if the predictions are right for
Monday, you'd have to be over 40 to remember temps this cold.
;)
My pet peeve is the attempts to substitute some godawful
windchill number in place of the real air temperature. -10
isn't scaring you? How about -40! Yeah! Bet that'll do it.
If only they could bundle swine flu and a couple of killer
bees in that scare package, we'd be all set.

It might be worth noting that the skin of young children and the
elderly will handle the temperatures, including wind chill
differently than young adults/adults. My concern is the number
of young children I see every day that, like their parent(s) are
completely inappropriately dressed to handle the colder
temperatures of even a typical winter day. The 'adults' just
don't seem to understand the need for the basics of hats and
mitts for their kids when they send them off or bring them to
school. And no...it's not because the kids took off the stuff
when they left the house.

I'm afraid you're spot on with your assessment Sheila. I see
that in my grandkids.

I have a large stuff sack in the classroom, filled with hats,
mitts (not gloves) and even socks for the kids. Just so they can
be sure to get some outside time on the days where it's at least
in the double digits. They return them to the sack immediately
after coming back inside. I learned early on, I would never see
the clothing again if I let them take it home.

I take it you are a teacher. My very favorite teacher was my
third grade one. In a hurry to go to school one day I ran out
without my jacket. It was quite cold out when I went out for
recess so my teacher wrapped me into her jacket and we walked
around the playground that way. She called me her Little
Chickadee.

Well... I wasn't always one. Over the years, it was an on and
off volunteer thing. Kids are a riot. I like being around them.
But, injuries incurred from a motor vehicle accident a few years
ago forced me to officially change direction.
That was very kind of your teacher. :) Maybe you ought to
change your screen name to 'Chickadee'?

Cute!
That teacher volunteers for the voting place in my community and
on the rare occasion that I do go vote I always reach out for
her and thank her for all she did for me.

Feb 2, 1985 it was -28 (without the windchill). I remember the
date well...because our car wouldn't start and my daughter was
born at home.
