Dog food draws concerns in central Wisconsin
Jonathan Anderson, News-Herald Media 11:50 a.m. CDT September 2,
2015
MARSHFIELD — A nationwide scare over dog food has hit central
Wisconsin.
Within the past month, dog owners across the country have
reported finding what look like fibers or wires embedded in
kibble, including in food from popular Pedigree and Purina
brands.
The companies have said the material is natural fiber that poses
no danger to dogs, but despite that claim, some customers have
switched brands.
Greg Fox of Marshfield said he purchased Purina Pro Plan dog
food several weeks ago and later discovered what he described as
rigid, wire-like objects protruding from pieces of kibble. His
wife contacted Purina and was told the material likely is animal
hair.
But Fox said the material appeared to rust after he put it in a
solution of water and rock salt for two hours.
"It's just the weirdest thing,” Fox said. “I've never seen it
before.”
Fox’s two vizslas were reluctant to eat the dog food, he said,
but they did not become ill when they did. After discovering the
wire-like material, Fox stopped feeding the food to the dogs.
While Purina has agreed to refund Fox for the food, he has
decided to use a different brand, he said.
The Animal Medical and Surgical Clinic in Wisconsin Rapids has
had at least one inquiry from a concerned pet owner who reported
finding similar material in her dog food.
However, a sampling of veterinarians and animal hospitals in
Wausau and Stevens Point by Gannett Central Wisconsin Media
found no similar complaints.
In a statement, Purina spokesperson Wendy Vlieks said pet owners
are likely describing small hair fibers from beef and pork
ingredients, which derive from meat and bone that are widely
used in pet foods. Those fibers, she said, are not harmful.
"There are no quality or safety issues with Purina pet foods,
and our products can be fed with complete confidence," Vlieks
said.
Pet owners with concerns or questions can call Purina at
800-778-7462.
Pedigree has issued a similar response in social media posts.

Anyone around Central WI keep it in stock? Might be time for a
switch.
I went to purina when Diamond had the bad batches of dog food
some years ago, seemed a decent brand back then. Didn't
realize the stuff has become Chinese industrial waste with
artificial gravy flavor.

I use 3 of the popular Purina cat chows, the green bag, purple
bag and orange bag and I have not seen any problem with that at
all. Maybe that will be next.

Most of the dog food out there now is garbage. Grain filler.
Just makes your dogs crap a ton. Goes right thru them. I would
never consider buying a brand that Wal Mart or any of the big
box chains handle.
I buy mine from my Vet.

Snickers, the stuff your vet sells is just an overpriced version
of the same stuff.
