Why the assumption that resources are finite? Or that they need
to remain that way?
If we are at the point where medical care for seniors is a waste
of scarce resources, then we need to expand those resources.
If surgery can give a 90 year old another year of life, then it
is absolutely worth it.

Bullsh1t. If you haven't accomplished everything in the first
90 years of your life, 1 more year isn't going to make any
difference. Money better spent else where. Talk to a senior
about it before you start spewing here. Most will say the same
thing.

Well...I'd switch that up a bit. People have the right to
"choose". And that includes the choice to die. I think Oregon is
the only state which allows for such a choice. For me? Per life
experience so far, and the fact that I don't have any little
kids depending on me at present: when it comes to cancer..I
would choose to become part of the Duke University Research
project. I'd like to be able to benefit those coming down the
road behind me.

That isn't your decision to make, nor the government's. It's
that of the senior and their MD. If they feel it's time to go,
that's their business. Nobody elses. I'm certainly not going to
force that decision for financial reasons.

I get what Trolly is saying and agree with him. What would you
all say if Carter needed a heart transplant instead...would you
be ok with that at the age of 90?
Personally I think Carter will opt for palliative care only at
this point.

What would you say if Carter was your father or some other loved
one that wanted treatment? Would you look them in the eye and
say, "You're too old to even suggest it, let alone even think
you ought to receive treatment other than Hospice".

Yes Sheila I would. I wouldn't word it as harshly as you
mentioned but I would explain to them what to expect from that
"treatment". I worked as a nurse for over thirty years. There
comes a point in time when instead of prolonging life...medical
intervention ends up prolonging death.

And, even if you explained to them what to expect from the
"treatment", it's still their "choice" whether or not to opt for
it. And their reasons will vary as well. You may not agree with
their reasons. But, it still doesn't give you the right to judge
and say it's "their time to go". As a nurse, you know your first
duty is to provide compassionate care, devoid of personal bias
in controversial choices. The rest is up to the patient.

You are correct. As a nurse I would never tell a patient to
refuse treatment if they wanted it....however if they would ask
me questions I would be honest and not sugar coat anything.
Please read this link...it's written about doctors but it also
pertains to the majority of those in the medical profession.
