Carter has Liver Cancer

Jimmy Carter has announced that while removing a mass from his
liver last month it was noted he had cancer that had
metastasized to other area of his body. Now face it, the guy
was the second worse president in American history but has done
much to help the human cause around the world since then. Most
notably his work with Habitat for Humanity.
I find myself however having a great deal of problems with this
whole story. The man is 90 years old. Why operate on a mass?
What kind of quality of life would he have had without it? He
has liver disease that has spread throughout his body? What are
the chances of extending his life and having a decent quality of
life? This is the problem with medicine today. We spend too
much money on the Jimmy Carter's of the world while those who
are anonymous with little resources go without.

I suspect that the cancer metastasized from another part of the
body...probably the pancreas, as he has a family history.
As for whether the surgery should have been done, he's a former
president of the United States. I seriously doubt that anyone
went without treatment because of his surgery. After all the
humanitarian work this good man did, he deserves the best care
possible.
Oh, and he's the first of many Democratic candidates that I did
NOT vote for. In retrospect, I feel he was the most moral
president we ever had.

Thank you for inadvertently making my point for me Linda, even
though you missed the point I was trying to make. You may think
he's a great man, others may think he's a great man, but a 50
year old father who doesn't get the treatment because of
insurance or cost or for whatever the reason has many people who
thinks he's a great man as well. I get it. Carter's a great
man, he was a president he deserves it. Others OTOH may not for
any number of reasons. Too many medical resources are being
used to keep 90 year old rich people alive while the not so old
and not so prominent are dying daily. How old do you need to be
before you say enough is enough? How long do you want to
prolong Jimmy's life? Kind of goes against what he's been
working for all these years don't you think?

Whaddya a socialist now? :)
Pretty much any Medicare recipient would have the same basic
options as Carter, I watched it with two elderly relatives
fighting futile battles. We don't deny cancer surgery based
merely on age. If you are healthy enough to have it and there
is some benefit, you'll likely get it. I'd hate to see the day
where those services are rationed.
Carter was one of the worst presidents only if you are counting
our lifetime. There were some real stinkers our history.
And you know what? In general terms, Carter inherited a mess
and he left a mess. Bush inherited a strong economy and left a
near-depression. I'd take Carter over that mess in a do-over.
I might also take him over Obama. At least Carter didn't think
Drone attacks on US citizens were A-OK and he understood the
bill of rights.

Right now he was the second worse. No, Medicare won't cover
something like this. Too expensive. It may have covered the
initial surgery but any coverage after that would be denied. If
you don't have the money or insurance to cover it up front you
won't get it. WE need to start looking at quality of life in
matters such as this. Face it, he's dying. How long do you
want to live anyway?

I think the bigger question is who gets to make that decision?
You and your MD, or some faceless bureaucrat or insurance
company drone?
Yeah, I know that's what often happens now...but the fix isn't
to codify that practice or implement rationing based on age. I
really don't want the government deciding what's in my best
interests. Not in any facet of my life.

Nope, he and his insurance company did. The issue is the
treatment would have been better used elsewhere. Much like
renovating a house with a leaky roof while not fixing the roof.
It's a total waste of resources. The cot of said treatment may
be much cheaper if it wasn't wasted on 90 year olds hoping to
cling to life a year or two more.

That is a good question and I am glad I am not the one who gets
to judge that.
My very old cat is dying of cancer. He is too old to survive a
surgery. Perhaps Carter would be unable to survive a surgery
also. All I know of the issue is to do my best to make an old
guy comfortable.
