Officials study 2014 Wood County crash map

Oh the stupidity!
I know what the issue is on Hwy 54 and Cty U. I travel this on
my way to work. I watch people coming from Kellner run the stop
sign to turn right to go to Plover. Why the cops do not sit
there and arrest people I don't know. Maybe it is because Cty U
is situated on the county line and it would be a hassle for Wood
County or Portage County to arrest the people.
Law enforcement, fire department and highway officials are
studying a map of 2014 crashes in Wood County to determine what
areas are causing traffic concerns, said Steve Kreuser, Wood
County Emergency Management director.
Wood County had three fatal crashes in 2014, 141 crashes with
injuries and 318 crashes with property damage.
Crashes were down in 2014, Kreuser said. The two biggest areas
of concern on the 2014 crash map was the highways 10 and 186
intersection in Auburndale and the highways U and 54
intersection in Biron that already are being looked at.
"Highway 10 has always been a concern; we have double stop signs
there at Highway 186," Kreuser said. "People misjudge the
intersection and how long it takes to get across."
People are going 65 mph in the area and drivers who are waiting
to cross the highway don't realize how quickly oncoming traffic
gets to the scene, Kreuser said.
When officials look at the annual map, they are looking for
significant crashes, Wood County Sheriff's Department Lt. Shawn
Becker said. Any location where there are fatalities,
significant injuries or crashes occurring frequently get a
closer look, Becker said.
Officials might determine that the crashes in a particular
stretch warrant extra law enforcement patrols in the area to get
drivers to slow down or use more caution and stop signs, Becker
said. In other cases, officials might ask for a study of an area
to see whether changes to road layout or signage are needed, he
said.
One area where crashes led to a study and planned changes is the
intersection of highways U and 54 in Biron, Becker said. The
Department of Transportation currently is working on a plan to
add turn lanes to Highway 54 at the intersection. The
intersection was the site of one Wood County injury crash in
2014.
One thing Becker sees as an issue on the 2014 crash map are the
number of vehicle-deer crashes. The map shows 91 crashes
involving deer in 2014. Although the crashes occur most
frequently in the fall, people need to realize they can happen
at any time of year, Becker said.
"It happens most frequently when rut is on, but that doesn't
mean you couldn't hit one in February or March," Becker said.
The map also shows that there have been vehicle-deer crashes in
the city limits of Wisconsin Rapids, Becker said. Drivers should
realize that the crashes can occur anywhere and be alert.
Members of the Wood County Traffic Safety Commission will study
the map, which they received at a meeting this past week, and
bring any concerns or areas they want studied to the next
meeting, Kreuser said.
