Elderly Wis. driver strikes 9 cars in parking lot
       Posted: Feb 17, 2015 12:18 PM CST
MAYVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- Police say the elderly driver who struck
nine vehicles in the parking lot of a Mayville grocery store
       won't be cited.
Police Chief Christopher MacNeill says the episode in the
Piggly Wiggly lot last Friday was simply an accident. He says
the 92-year-old man pulled out of his parking spot, got his foot
stuck on the accelerator, panicked and lost control of his
vehicle. Two of the nine vehicles he struck were occupied. No
       one was hurt.
Donald Gourlie was one of those who came out of the grocery
store to find that his wife's car had been hit. Gourlie tells
WISN-TV he had purchased a Valentine's Day card for his wife of
58 years and wrote on the bottom "I love you. Sorry about your
       car."

I'm not buying the story that it was a medical emergency or that
his foot got stuck. His foot might have been stuck the first
time he hit a car but after that how do you shift into reverse
and back into drive more than once? It also appeared that he
tried to flee the scene. Panic is not an excuse. I think he
should have been cited....he is lucky he didn't kill someone!!
After a certain age there should be mandatory simulated driving
tests every few years to renew your license.

I'm in favor of re-testing every 5-7 years for everyone,
regardless of age. No shortage of terrible drivers of all ages.
Looks like the guy rammed a car and panicked to me.

I have a good one for you guys. My brother and I got into a
flipping good fight awhile back over how one is to steer a
vehicle. I was taught that one is to turn with both hands, hand
over hand. He said that is not so and that could cause an
accident. (Says the man who has been in countless accidents in
his lifetime.) He told me that one is to use one hand and to use
       it to make complete circles.

       I forgot about those.
I tried to get the information on line in the WDM handbook but I
can't find anything. Maybe there wasn't any such procedure to
follow, but I thought there was, like keeping your hands in the
       10 o'clock, two o'clock position.

That is still taught in driver's ed. The thinking is you always
have at least one hand with a solid grip on the wheel at all
       times that way.

I guess I'm a sloppy driver. I find myself driving with one
       hand most of the time.
