Obama scolds Staples
By: trollslayer Date: February 13, 2015, 7:50 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Kind of the joke of the week. A president who hasn't even
operated a kool aid stand in his lifetime scolding a large
company for it's work place practice.
In an interview published Tuesday, President Barack Obama
scolded the US office supply giant Staples for using a rule in
the Affordable Care Act as an excuse to limit its workers'
hours.
Mr Obama's comments were prompted by a story Buzzfeed published
on Monday quoting anonymous employees who said that the company
had started rigorously enforcing a policy limiting part-time
workers to no more than 25 hours a week.
Staples, they said, explained that the move was due to
Obamacare's employee mandate, which went into effect at the
beginning of the year
The mandate requires large companies like Staples to provide
health insurance for employees working 30 or more hours a week
or face heavy fines. According to Buzzfeed, Staples threatened
to fire anyone who worked more than 25 hours a week, and one
worker was allegedly told that Mr Obama was responsible for the
crackdown.
"I haven't looked at Staples' stock lately or what the
compensation of the CEO is, but I suspect that they could well
afford to treat their workers favourably and give them some
basic financial security," the president said.
While Mr Obama said he understands small "mom-and-pop" stores
who can't afford to pay their workers' benefits, he declined to
sympathise with large corporations who point fingers at
Obamacare when they cut back on wages.
"Shame on them," he said.
In a statement on Wednesday, Staples said Obama "appears not to
have all the facts" because they say the policy limiting
part-time hours wasn't the result of Obamacare.
"It's unfortunate that the president is attacking a company that
provides more than 85,000 jobs and is a major taxpayer," Kirk
Saville, a company spokesperson, told CNNMoney.
No, but he's sorta been in charge of a very large and powerful
country. :D
This guy can't see unintended consequences.
What did anyone think would happen if you put costly
requirements on all employees working over 30 hours? If you
answered "their hours would be reduced to 29 or less" you would
be correct. Couldn't see that coming, eh?

Being "in charge of a very large and powerful country" isn't
running a business. For example, if Staples ran a budget
deficit like Obama has the last six years they would have been
out of business years ago. That is why he couldn't see that
coming while everyone els did. The smarter thing to do would
have been to attack a company that just instituted that rule,
not one that decided to more strictly enforce it. There are
enough of them out there. Imagine what would happen if Staples
decided to do what the president asked, cut all part time jobs.
What do you think that would do to the presidents unemployment
numbers?

I've yet to see somebody who is working part time say their job
is providing them with "financial security". That's not what
part time jobs are for. The compensation of the CEO has nothing
to do with it. But that is jut another straw man he had to set
up. If it wasn't for the straw man he wouldn't have any
argument at all. Plus what he seems to forget and you so aptly
pointed out, after six years this is his economy, this is a
situation of his own creation but he has to blame others. Kinda
like calling sequestration "mindless" without taking into
consideration who came up with the idea.

They are paying benefits for their full time employees, just
like every other company.

Today's numbers lesson.
16 is number of employees that produce 640 total man hours of
work per week working 40 hours per worker.
30 is number of employees that produce the same 640 total man
hours in a 28 hour per worker per week.
The question remaining is, "Is the healthcare cost of the first
16 MORE or is it LESS than having all 30 being paid for that
extra hour?" ???

No, not every company. Most in this country are employed by
small business, those with 50 or less are exempt from Obamacare.
Staples is owned by a Hedge fund (starboard). They are
deliberately strangling Staples in order to get approval to
merge it with Office Depot to "save" it.
The employees are merely collateral damage.
eta: I see the FTC approved the merger last week.

Erm... Deficit? Staples is heavily in debt. Roughly a billion or
so existing debt + borrowing another 2.5-3 billion to complete
the Office Depot merger. An amount their current revenues cannot
support. Cross your fingers...
Or did you think only the US economy ran on borrowed money?
