How Times Have Changed!

For Christmas I got the complete set of "All in the Family" on
DVD. (1971-1979) I just love how politically incorrect it is.
Its even funnier to me now than it was back then.
There is no way that a show like this would air today during
prime time on local TV channels. It would be deemed unacceptable
and offensive by the PC crowd. Instead we now have graphic
violence, swearing, partial nudity, explicit sex scenes and
homosexual affairs all considered acceptable for prime time
viewing.

What a great present!! I loved that show! Funny, I was
watching Dirty Harry the other day and thought the same thing
about that movie. There was a lot of dialogue cut out for the
very ame reason.
I have the entire MASH series on VHS. My only problem is I have
no player to watch it.

I think All in the Family would play just fine today. the fact
is, Archie Bunker was intended to be a caricature of certain
personalities...personalities of which we still see today.

I have to disagree with you Linda. This show was on prime
time....back in the day when there were only three channels to
watch and parents and kids would sit down to watch it as a
family after eating dinner. Every racial slur there is, is said
on this show. I can't even type the majority of those racial
slurs on the internet without them being blocked. Do you really
think they would consider this a family type show today?
The episode I watched last night had two black robbers breaking
into the Bunker's house to hide from the cops. They figured out
right away that Archie was a bigot when Archie called them "you
people". Mike (Meathead) stepped in to tell them how racist
Archie is and then made a smug face at Archie. He went on to
tell the robbers that Archie is a lost cause....that Archie will
never understand what its like to be poor and black and growing
up in a ghetto. The robbers then told Mike that he is even worse
than a bigot like Archie....they told him he is a niggeral. That
would never air on prime time today. (I didn't know what a
niggeral was...so I had to look it up. For those of you who
don't know....its a white liberal who fights for black causes.)

Ha ha ha....proves my point. That word was censored here. It is
the "N" word with al added at the end.

I'm thinking less about the actual words used and more about the
message. We have just as many pig-headed bigots in America now
as we did in the '70s. The lessons that AITF taught could
still be used by a lot of people.

I think they could recreate an Archie character in some form, no
shortage of Hollywood depicting older white guys as out of touch
and inappropriate.
Problem would be with the Mike character, every other episode or
so his ideals conflict with his reality, this ****al is an
example. Last time I remember that on network sitcoms was the
end of MASH when the intellectuals had to admit they actually
were part of the military machine instead of doctors that just
cleaned up after the military did it's damage.

And of those "pig headed bigots". Most of them are black.

Snickers, why do you have to turn everything into an opportunity
to rip on black people? Do you even KNOW any black people?
