I have to agree with you guys, after watching the video. You
raise what looks like a gun and point it at a cop, you are
       likely going to get shot.
A dash cam would have gotten the whole thing in full detail,
       without any question.
I saw a sign placed at the scene that said "They can't kill us
all." Well, the best way not to get killed is to not draw on a
       cop.
I still have questions about the Ferguson shooting. But this one
I'm seeing the cop well within his rights to shoot. And the fact
that there were a number of people surrounding the officer..hard
telling if any of them were carrying a weapon.
I feel sorry for the owners of the gas station. How much gas did
they sell with an angry mob surrounding their pumps?

A dash cam is only as good as the direction the car is parked
       in. Unfortunately they don't swivel.

Well, the body cam he had would have been perfect....if he had
       put it on.

And that is going to be one of the problems with a body cam. It
does not run continuously but needs to be turned on. Now it the
heat of a moment it adds one more step an officer has to think
about before getting out of the car. I would venture to say the
times they will be most needed that step in the name of saving
time will be skipped. To bad there is not a way to make it
activate upon leaving the car, or go longer than the current 30
second loop many of them run.
My understanding of the dash can situation in Chicago is that
the City bought low-bid cameras and hired some relative of an
aldermans friends who were a bunch of hillbillies with rented
trucks from Arkansas to install the things, they burned out
electrical wiring and other systems because the vehicles weren't
built with that kind of electrical capacity in mind, which
voided out a shitload of warranties when Ford found out what
they were doing, and they've spent exactly ZERO dollars on
servicing and maintaining the cameras, meaning the
out-of-service ratio is thru the roof.

I haven't heard any reports that THIS officer's dash cam was not
       useable...

Depends on what you buy. Some keep a 30 second pre-roll going,
even when turned off. Once you turn it on it saves the previous
       30 seconds and keeps rolling.
Periodic (automatic) uploads to a central server when the
       internal memory gets full.
Some do turn on automatically when you leave the car, or when
       you speak.
It's only as good as the people using it though. If you are
about to do something you really don't want on film, you can
de-activate the camera and call it "faulty".
