US Savings Bonds

Among some of the things we found in my moms belongings while
going through her paperwork was a $25 US Savings Bond from 1966.
My brother took it in to find the value of this just out of
curiosity. It was worth a whopping $238. 48 years worth of
interest didn't add up to a lot here!

As small of a return that it had over those years. It still did
better then a savings account does now days.

Kind of a fun find there TS, although I wish the circumstances
were happier ones.
Bonds aren't for growth, they are for safety. You may not gain
much but you'll never lose money.
Snickers, the low interest rates tick me off. They encourage
borrowing instead of saving. Of course they also force people
into the stock market if they need growth, which IMHO is
intentional.

I don't think that was such a bad deal. I'm not sure of this but
I think who ever bought it paid $12.50 for it and when it
reached its maturity date it was worth $25 and eventually after
all those years it increased to $238.

Well Jeeps, back in the day it was patriotic to buy bonds. A
quick check on the math shows it made about $5 a year. If I
were looking for an investment, I would be looking for a little
more than that! :D

I know there were some bonds that the government quit paying
interest on a number of years ago. Not sure what the cut off
was.

That isn't uncommon with certain types, once they hit maturity
that's it.
