This police body cam thing - good or bad?

It would be cool if we could put a body cam on a cop seconds
before a controversial incidence, problem helped but not solved.
Then again, I ain't sure I want more government cameras forever
subject to open record requests. I mouthed off to a cop 30
years ago and am pretty happy that it was not recorded. Hate to
be the young lady filmed on a public record cop-cam walkin into
an abortion clinic.

what concerns me is who is going to scan hrs and hrs of
video--and how much storage capacity will be needed--and for how
long?? And even what is going to be the protocol for when the
system fails---think we may be opening a big can of worms

Is it just me or does this seem like a life imitates life story?
A couple of weeks ago an episode of BLUEBLOODS was based on this
premise. :-\
A few months ago there was a also controversy about whether or
not people should be barred from video recording police. In
short the police want to record you but want to criminalize you
from recording them. :o

Great points. Of course as we've found out with video, (and
stills for that matter) different people have different opinions
like, Martin didn't look "that beat up". Wilson's injuries
"weren't that serious". "Brown wasn't that rough with the store
clerk" Or "he didn't resist arrest very much". Even when met
with indisputable evidence some will still try to change or
minimize the narrative.

I don't see it as being a lot different than the dash cams most
cruisers run now.
Storage is cheap, videos aren't reviewed unless there's a
subopena, complaint or lawsuit, and the gal walking into an
abortion clinic isn't going to be filmed unless the police stop
her.
She's taking her chances with Google Street view too. Welcome to
2014.
Problem is there are too many liars these days.
Witnesses lie. Defendants lie. Cops lie. That's what our
society has become, unfortunately. Video isn't perfect at
sorting lies from truth but it can help.
The results from municipalities currently using officer cams has
been encouraging, enormous drops (80%?) in complaints about
police brutality or excessive force. Everyone behaves better
when the camera rolls, and often liars don't bother knowing the
video won't back up their false claims. It protects both the
citizen and the officer against false accusations.

politicians should wear body cams also. His answer was funny!

Yes some still claim it was a "seat belt" hold. Having most of
the incident in video didn't get an indictment either. Kind of
shoots the argument for body cams on all police in the foot.

I see your point and agree it could be helpful. I also can
imagine in a open records State like Wisconsin, where anybody
can view and copy any public record for any or no reason, folk
doing just that.
Not sure I want copies made of what the cop saw every time.
Things like 13 month olds with most of the face torn off cause
they went through the front windshield, or the 50 year old awash
in 2 gallons of body fluids she ejected shortly before death
from a massive GI bleed. I doubt anybody comes out looking an
angel on the cop-cam during the investigation of a domestic
violence incident, or, I wonder what the rape victim will think
about the initial police interview being subject to public
viewing.
The dash cam pretty much limits us to seeing funny things drunks
do, the body cam will show close up shots of the really nasty
stuff, alright if it's someone else's family.

What a great response. I never looked at it that way. This
could be like the You Tube for the WCCA. Some people live on
the WCCA and this would give them another outlet. (sarcasm).
If this weren't to be public information I could see the lawyers
lining up to make it so. Bad idea in my opinion.
