Cop shoots 12 year old carrying toy gun.

I'm sure you're familiar with the story. Most folks (including
me) believe the cop was justified in his action given the
situation, even though the result was horrific.
TV commentator brought up an interesting question:
Why the need to drive up 3 feet away from the alleged gunman and
put the cops in immediate danger?
Why not park 1/2 block away, order the kid to drop the gun
and hit the dirt over the bullhorn from a safer position?
Might have had an entirely different outcome.
Was this bad judgement on the officer's part, leading to
unnecessary exposure for his partner and unnecessary danger for
the kid?

Monday morning quarterbacking at it's worse. If the kid had a
real gun, how many more could have been killed while the cops
sat 1/2 a block away? Just like the many loon's who said Wilson
should have drove away and waited for backup.

How many more? Speculate much?
Pull up a safe distance away. Command the perp to drop the
weapon and get on the ground. If he does not comply, or makes
any move that threatens the public, then take him out. The
public is in no more danger than they would be if you were
closer in.
The decision this cop made removed that option, he backed
himself into a corner he could only shoot his way out of.
Doesn't hit me as the smartest choice.

No speculation. Asking a question. There are many other
factors to take into consideration besides a kid having a gun.
Houses around? People around? Back up around and on and on.
Since I wasn't there and don't know a lot about the incident and
how it unfolded I find myself unqualified to offer any
suggestion as to what the officer should have done one way or
the other.

This one just bothers me. Innocence lost, I suppose.
As kids we played all sorts of cops/robbers games running
around the neighborhood with toy guns. Bang! Bang! I imagine I
pointed mine at more than one neighborhood adult, who probably
played along with the game.
These days it'll get you killed. That's sad.

Me as well. These day's kids take guns to school and shoot
fellow students. Now days cops have no choice but to think that
anything that resembles a gun may very well be a gun. In this
case the outcome is unfortunate for both the cop and the kids
family. The cop is now getting death threats merely for doing
his job and the family has lost a son.

Yeah, I know you are right. There are 12 year olds that shoot
cops these days. I guess there's no going back to Mayberry USA.

So these two cops stood there for 4 minutes doing nothing
except watching the kid bleed out? Another couple of cops pull
up, administer CPR and call an ambulance?
