Common Core Standards are nothing more than making our kids
dumb. How many jagged little pills must be forced on us before
some of us wake up?

I don't know why so many people are in such an uproar over
setting common standards for students across the country...

Speaking only for myself, uniform standards aren't the
objection. The implementation is, for two reasons:
1) It's a step backwards for top-performing schools like
Lincoln, AHS, much of central WI. We're being moved down
towards the center, And
2) Look at some of the Common Core math. It's a bizarre method
of teaching, counterintutitive. Nothing at all like what you
and I learned in school. IMHO simpler methods are better, not
unnecessarily complicated and convoluted methods.

But, Rapids....remember when we hit about 4th grade and we got
hit with "new math?" It was also different than what our parents
learned.
I don't think Common Core is going to keep good schools,
teachers, and students from reaching for the top. But it is
going to make low- achieving districts pick up their game.

Yeah....but New Math fell out of favor and got trashcanned in
less than a decade. Back to learning math the way our parents
did :D Why not? It works.
Again IMHO, the problem with education in the US isn't the
teaching methods, it's more of a cultural/societal problem.
Schools work very well in affluent, low-crime areas because the
kids already have their basic needs met, feel safe, have family
support and the schools can teach academics instead of serving
more basic needs.
No new teaching method will help a kid who's father is in
prison, mother is on crack, gets evicted every 4 months and
hasn't eaten since yesterday.

Good points, Rapids.
But what is the solution for students who live with bigger
concerns than getting good grades?

If you have a few hours of free time I would suggest you ask
just about any teacher They will give you an earful. Several
members of my family are educators. One teaches preschool, They
now have testing of preschool students (obviously not a written
test so it becomes a time consuming project for them and takes
much time away from working with the group). When i was a
youngen i remember one test a year. Now it seems all teachers
are doing is testing students. The idea that you can have a
national standard for what a child in a particular grade should
know is admirable, but not really attainable, That is unless you
want to lower the standard down so far that it becomes
meaningless. NCLB was a mistake and this is doubling down on a
false pretense.
Children are each individual and how and the pace at which they
learn varies. The tools necessary to get each child to learn
varies Thinking there is a cookie cutter mold that can be
applied to every student across the country is not something
that can work, just as thinking that EVERY student in 4th grade
needs to be doing some standard is not realistic.
