As things stand, some believe that the best possible outcome is
for Ukraine to negotiate and give up its ambitions to join the
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). How would you respond
to that argument? And, in more general terms, how does the
Social Movement view the issue of NATO and its role in this war?
First of all, we think that any intention to join NATO cannot
justify the Russian invasion. This is an issue that is in the
field of internal debate and national sovereignty. Secondly, we
see NATO as a club of the richest countries and their allies.
For Ukraine, it would be better to develop relations with all

and ensure real independence. Third, it
is important to realize how the NATO issue has impacted
Ukrainian political life. The prospect of membership was very
vague: NATO has never guaranteed Ukraine's membership. So an
“Atlantic orientation” was always more of a case of wishful
thinking on the part of the government, whereas for the
citizenry it was a reaction to the collective trauma and fear of
war in 2014. NATO could have offered Ukraine membership long
ago, but instead promised some kind of cooperation, which only
left Ukraine vulnerable. We believe that NATO has played the
role of passive spectator in this war.

Since the end of 2021, they have not done anything decisive to
support Ukraine with weapons. It seems that they are more
interested in assessing the strength of the Russian army. There
have been debates on the issue of sending weapons to Ukraine.
Some oppose this saying it would only contribute to the
remilitarization of Europe and the empowerment of NATO. Others
say it will lead to a scenario like Afghanistan in the 1980s,
with the Ukrainians being used to achieve the US goal of
undermining Russia. What is your position on this issue? I see
no reason for a debate like this.
