In September 1982, loggers were working in a woods about 4 miles
north of Ridgeland near Highway 25. At about 15.00 on a Tuesday
afternoon the loggers came across a decomposed body in the
woods, near an open field. At first, they thought they had found
a pile of clothing but then discovered the clothing contained a
skeleton. No eyeglasses were found at the scene, but the victim
may have worn glasses. There was no billfold or other
identification on the body. Cut marks in the shirt and jacket
correspond to cut marks on the thoracic vertebra. It isn’t known
if the person was killed at the scene or if the body was
deposited there after the murder. Also unknown is how long the
body was there before it was discovered. It may have been there
since the fall, then frozen over the winter to be discovered the
following September.

Circumstances of Recovery
The decomposed body was discovered in a wooded area by loggers
who were working in the area. The body was about 200 yards from
the 2-lane state highway in the woods and on top of a hill.

Distinguishing Marks/Features: Surgical repair to the left knee,
evidenced by a screw and staple installed in the tibia. The
procedure would have required a sophisticated hospital, an
extended hospitalization and a long recovery period, possibly 6
months to a year. The pin and staple were numbered, but the
manufacturer had no way of tracing where the product had been
used. He would have had a scar at the location of the surgery.

Clothing: Blue Sears jeans with a size 38 waist, a long-sleeved
plaid cotton Western-style plaid shirt with pearl buttons. A
lined denim jacket, Maverick brand, white undershorts with blue

trim (nearly knee length) and blue tennis shoes with white
vertical stripes, size 10. Significant wear was noted on the
bottoms of the shoes.

State Trunk Highway 25 is a state highway in the U.S. state of
Wisconsin. The route serves local traffic in the western part of
the state, connecting Durand, Menomonie and Barron. It is
two-lane surface road with the exception of urban multilanes
within Menomonie.

Wisconsin's Unsolved: 1982 John Doe Murder

Figuring out an unsolved murder is hard enough, but where do you
start when you don't know who died?
For nearly three decades, Barron County detectives have been
trying to identify a John Doe murder victim, with no success.
On a beautiful fall day, a group of loggers came across a badly
decomposed body. It turned out the man had been murdered more
than three months earlier. 26 years later, investigators still
don't know his name.
John Doe is the name nobody wants to end up with. The
pathologist’s report says he's a white male, between 18 and 22
years old. Probably 19. Weighed 180 to 195 pounds. 5’8” to 5’9”.
Brown hair. Husky build. Time of death- April to May 1982.
Beyond that, almost everything else is a mystery.
September 21, 1982. Its sunny, clear, and 65 degrees. Mary
Dexter is working as a Barron County dispatcher, when she gets a
call for a possible dead body. Deputies raced to the scene in
the town of Dallas, but they are months too late. Loggers
working on private land found a skeleton about 100 yards from
the tree line. The skull and lower jaw were detached and lying
about 3 feet away.
"The cause of death was said to be three puncture wounds to the
chest area with a sharp object," says Dexter, who now works as a
detective for Barron County.
Investigators say the stab wounds were so deep, they left cuts
on the victim's spine. Detectives tried to match dental records,
with no luck. But the right tibia held a promising clue.
"It had what appeared to be a surgically implanted staple and
allen head screw in the bone," Dexter says.
Doctors said the victim had undergone specialized orthopedic
surgery and the pin in the bone had a serial number.
"They felt pretty confident that they'd be able to get the
identity just because it was so specialized, but they had no
luck, so we still do not have an identity for this body," she
adds.
Another road block. Then in 2000, investigators decided to try a
different tactic.
“The facial reconstruction is an absolute last resort,” says Dr.
Emily Craig. “Less than one percent of the cases I do need a
facial reconstruction and that's because law enforcement
officers have no idea where to start.”
Detectives called Craig, a forensic anthropologist for the state
of Kentucky, and asked her to put a face on John Doe. She uses
clay to mimic tissue, based on the skull's proportions. Craig
says 20 to 30 percent of facial reconstructions lead to a
positive identity, but only if the right person sees it.
"The most important thing is for people not to get caught up on
the details, because with a facial reconstruction, the best you
can hope for is a three dimensional caricature," Craig says.
Dexter says the face generated one or two calls, but nothing
useful. Now the Sheriff's Department has turned to the FBI for
help. In 2004, Dexter sent the bones to Quantico, Virginia, for
advanced DNA testing. One of the tests is done, but in early
February, the FBI said it didn't know when the second would be
finished.
Dexter says unless she can figure out John Doe's identity or
track down an eyewitness, the case will be almost impossible to
solve.
Dexter says if you know recognize the man's face from the
reconstruction, or know anything about this John Doe murder, you
can call the Barron County Sheriff's Department at 715-537-3106.
And if you or your family knows someone who is missing, Dr.
Craig says you should register with the National Missing and
Unidentified Persons System. That's a Department of Justice
database.
You can also submit a d-n-a sample to the National DNA Database,
so it can be matched to potential family members.

Barron County John Doe was a teenager or young adult found
murdered in Wisconsin in 1982.
He is currently undergoing testing by the DNA Doe Project.
On September 21, 1982, loggers working in the woods about 4
miles north of Ridgeland discovered the skeletal remains of the
decedent about 200 yards from the 2-lane Highway 25 and 100
yards from the treeline.
An autopsy determined the decedent to have perished as a result
of three puncture wounds to the chest, a theory compounded by
the state of the decedent's clothing and cut marks left on the
victim's spine.
While a pathologist’s report asserts that the decedent had been
a white male, between 18 and 22 years old, most likely 19.
Weighing 180 to 195 pounds, standing between 5’8” to 5’9”. With
brown hair and a husky build. With a date of death falling
between the months of March and April that year.
It isn’t known whether the decedent was killed at the scene or
if the body was deposited there following the murder.

Barron County John Doe
On September 21, 1982 a group of loggers discovered the body of

little could be determined about who this individual had been in
life as the body had been exposed to the elements for so long.
Investigators from the Barron County’s sheriff’s department have
worked tirelessly for the last 36 years in hopes of identifying
and reuniting John Doe with his loved ones.
DISCOVERY:
On a beautiful fall afternoon, a group of loggers who had been
working on private land about 4 miles north of Ridgeland, (in
the village of Dallas) stumbled upon the skeletal remains of a
young male. At first, they believed they found an old pile of
clothing but upon closer inspection they realized a skeleton was
nestled neatly inside. The remains were located about 200 yards
inward from Highway 25, on the top of a hill in a wooded area
near an open field. John Doe’s skull and mandible had separated
and were found about 3 feet away from one another.
EXAMINATION / PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
A forensic pathologist was called in to examine John Does
remains. They determined the skeleton belonged to a white male
between the ages of 18 and 24. John Doe stood 5’7” to 5’9” and
weighed approximately 180 – 195 lbs. Investigators described him
as having a ‘husky build’ perhaps once being a wrestler or a
football player. He had brown hair. His eye color is however
unknown. John Doe’s dental information is available and on file
to aid in his identification. Upon examination, it was clear
John Doe had just received extensive dental work that would have
cost a bit of money. There was crowding among his lower teeth.
The Pathologist found John Doe had undergone a specialized
surgery on his left knee not too long before his death. A
surgically implanted staple and screw were discovered in his
tibia. The staple and screw both contained serial numbers. This
gave investigators a hopeful avenue to explore as they attempted
to identify John Doe. The manufacturer, however, had no way of
tracing where their products had been used. It was estimated at
the time; a surgery of this magnitude would have needed to be
completed in a ‘more sophisticated hospital’ and John Doe
would’ve had an extensive stay that would range anywhere from 6
months to a year. John Doe would have also had to undergo some
type of physical therapy to aid in his recovery. He would’ve
been left with a visible scar on his left knee.
