The body was found at 5PM on Emleys Hill Road in Upper Freehold,
New Jersey, inside a suitcase. His death is considered
suspicious, but not a homicide. Police believe he died of an
overdose of alcohol and heroin and those with him panicked and
dumped the body. The absence of warm clothing pointed to the
possibility that the man died indoors and was transported to the
location. The body had not been there for a long period of time
because the bag was on top of the most recent snowfall.

New Jersey hunters find body in suitcase
December 9, 2002
UPPER FREEHOLD, N.J. — Monmouth County authorities are trying to
determine the cause of death of a man whose body was found
inside a tweed suitcase.
The cause could not be determined through an autopsy, and
officials were waiting on toxicology test results, said Monmouth
County Prosecutor John Kaye.
Two hunters hiking through pine trees on Saturday found the
suitcase and called 9-1-1, Kaye said. There were no visible
signs of trauma on the man, who had no identification and no
scars or tattoos.
The man was described as Hispanic and in his mid-20s. He was 5
feet 11 inches tall, weighed 150 pounds and was dressed in
jeans, a shirt and socks.
Kaye said the body was likely left after Thursday night because
the wheeled luggage lay on top of the snow.
The body was found a few miles from Interstate 195, near the
entrance of Perretti Farms, home to two winners of the
Hambletonian and the breeder of McArdle, the 2002 New Jersey
Standardbred Horse of the Year.

Hunters discover body stuffed in suitcase
Bag discovered off Emley’s Hill Road, a few miles from I-195
Hunters in a snow-covered patch of trees in Upper Freehold made
a grisly discovery when they stumbled upon a dead body stuffed
into a brown-tweed suitcase on Saturday evening.
According to Monmouth County First Assistant Prosecu-tor Robert
A. Honecker Jr., the two men, whose identities were not
released, found the body of the unidentified young man in the
oversized bag at approximately 5:45 p.m.
Authorities were unable to determine the cause of death from an
autopsy performed Sunday, he said, noting that there were no
obvious signs of trauma on the body. Results of a toxicology
test are pending.
Honecker described the man, who was in his late teens to early
20s, as Hispanic, 5 feet 11 inches in height and weighing 150
pounds, with a 2-inch scar approximately 2 inches above his left
ear.
He was wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt, and a Chicago White
Sox jersey, but was without shoes, socks or a coat.
The absence of warm clothing pointed to the possibility that the
man died indoors and was transported to the location in which
the bag was found, he said.
The section of the township where the body was discovered is a
few miles from Interstate 195, which runs from Trenton to the
coast.
"We suspect that the body had not been there for a long period
of time because the bag was on top of the most recent snowfall,"
Honecker said.
The body was found in an area near the entrance of Perretti
Farms, between a pond and Emley’s Hill Road. Perretti Farms is
the home to two winners of the Hambletonian — a prestigious
national harness racing contest — and the breeder of McArdle,
the 2002 New Jersey Standardbred Horse of the Year.
According to Honecker, after opening the bag and seeing the
body, the hunters called 911. The New Jersey State Police
responded to the scene.
On Monday, Honecker said that the authorities were still
attempting to learn the man’s identity by entering the man’s
fingerprints and his description into state and national police
databases.
The New Jersey State Police and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s
Office Major Crimes Unit are investigating the incident.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the
New Jersey State Police Hightstown Barracks or the Monmouth
County Prosecutor’s Office at 1-800-533-7433.

Body dumped in woods still unidentified
By alison granito
Staff Writer
UPPER FREEHOLD — Little is known about the origins of a body
found by two hunters last week in a wooded area in Cream Ridge.
The body, which was found stuffed into a brown tweed suitcase
and left in a patch of trees off Emleys Hill Road on Dec. 7,
remained unidentified at press time. On Monday, an official from
the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office said that there was no
updated information to release on the case. Last week, the New
Jersey State Police released a physical description and a police
sketch of the victim.
"We are still trying to identify him and hope that the public
can help us do that," state police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Rehmann
said Thursday.
The young man in question was described as Hispanic, in his late
teens to early 20s, approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall and
weighing about 150 pounds.
The man was wearing blue Levi’s carpenter-style jeans, a white
T-shirt, a black Chicago White Sox baseball jersey, and a black
rod and bead necklace, according to officials. Last week,
authorities said that there were no obvious signs of trauma to
the body and that an autopsy performed on the man failed to
yield a cause of death. Results of a toxicology test are
pending.
The area where the victim was found is located just south of
Interstate 195, which runs from Trenton to the coast.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call state
police Hightstown Barracks Detective Bureau at (609) 448-0074 or
the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office at 1-800-533-7443.

Authorities investigate bones found in woods
Officials await results of autopsy performed in Freehold on
Monday
BY JENNIFER KOHLHEPP
Staff Writer
In December 2002, near Emley’s Hill Road, two hunters found a
suitcase containing the body of a man.
Authorities could not determine the man’s cause of death from an
autopsy, but toxicology test results showed the presence of
toxic levels of heroin in the victim’s system.
The man, who was in his late teens to early 20s, was Hispanic, 5
feet 11 inches tall and weighed 150 pounds. The victim had on
blue jeans, a white T-shirt and a Chicago White Sox jersey, but
was without shoes, socks and a coat.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the absence of warm
clothing pointed to the possibility that the man died indoors
and was transported to the location in which the bag was found.
Although authorities distributed a sketch of the man and
investigated the matter for two years, the prosecutor’s office
“administratively closed” the case in March 2003.
Kaye did not speculate on whether the two missing persons cases
could be related.
