MAMMOTH LAKES JANE DOE: NF, 30-50, found at Mammoth Lakes

On 5/26/2003 a human skull was found by a resident walking a
dog. On 5/29/2003 additional remains, clothing and personal
belongings were found nearby in a shallow grave apparently dug
up by animals. The deceased was a petite, adult female who had
at least one prior, full-term pregnancy during life. She may
have spent time prior to her death in the White Mountain area
near Piute Creek or the Valentine Reserve Ecological Area.

Distinguishing Marks/Features: Longer than shoulder length; One
artificial nail. Victim is determined to have had one full term
pregnancy. A scientist who specializes in DNA work in Native
American populations, was able to isolate the victim as being a
Zapotec Indian from far southern Mexico.

Dentals: Available (Poor repair, with one tooth missing on the
front right side. Teeth are slightly discolored and appear to
have had little or no dental care)

Clothing: Black bra (size 32 AA), cropped denim spandex pants
with lace up front (size 1), black socks, blue leather "Bass"
brand shoes with 3" square heel (size 5), Cold Air Design coat;
size 5 shoes; She would have worn size 1-2 pants
Jewelry: A single 1" gold loop earring, bracelet or necklace
with small multicolored beads, one silver "Jacklyn Smith" brand
wrist watch with matching band.

Circumstances of Discovery
The decedent was discovered in a shallow grave with human
remains scattered around the area, by a hiker walking his dog
above the Shady Rest campground in The Mammoth Lakes National
Forest, on May 25, 2003.
Mammoth Lakes is an outdoor resort community located on the
eastern border of California in the High Sierra mountains.
Scientists estimate that this woman had been hastily buried
sometime in late summer, or fall of 2002. Scientists have used
an innovative technique never before used in crime fighting. The
technique traces the woman's movement by identifying the origins
of the water she drank throughout her life.
Combining exhaustive and innovative DNA testing, with the above
mentioned method of identifying the source of the victim's
drinking water as recorded in unique isotopic signatures found
in her bones, hair and teeth, has helped investigators to narrow
and to trace her life. She was probably born and raised through
childhood in the American Southwest or in Northern Mexico. She
subsisted on a very poor diet, including a great deal of corn,
or maize, the water she drank was consistent with the isotopic
signature of the water in the American Southwest or northern
Mexico, or even in Los Angeles. Sometime later she moved south
to southern Mexico, possibly Oaxaca, where she spent about 10
years of her life. Finally, the last two years of her life the
victim traveled to California where she was killed.
A few days after the skeleton was found, a witness was located
that remembered an incident that occurred in the fall of 2002,
when a very short Asian looking female came into the Mammoth
Lakes Visitor Center with her husband. The woman told an
employee that her husband treated her badly and she was fearful
of him. The witness gave the woman a Wild Iris Domestic Violence
services card. The husband asked about campsite rules and stay
limits. The employee described the woman’s husband as “abrasive”
and “mean spirited”. The husband is described as a white male,
heavyset, 5'9" tall, heavyset, about 175 to 200 pounds, with
brown hair and a bushy mustache.
mtDNA was done and it was found that she was a Zapotec Indian
from Oaxaca, Mexico. It even narrowed it down to the specific
village. Authorities have made 2 expeditions to that village and
came up with a possible name. They are obtaining DNA from
relatives to make sure.
Authorities believe they have her name, Barbara Pacheco
Santiago. They planned on going to Oaxaca late in December 2006
to attempt to locate relatives to get DNA. No further
information is available.

Case
On May 25, 2003, a hiker's dog discovered a skull on a slope
1000 feet above Mammoth Lakes. Later in the week more remains
were found in a shallow grave at the top of a ridge called
Mammoth Knolls.
The San Francisco medical examiner's office determined that the
victim had been killed around August 2002. She was a 4-foot,
6-inch to 4-foot, 9-inch woman, 30-40 years old, and possibly
Asian. Her teeth were in poor condition, and she had likely
received no dental care during her life. She had given birth at
least once.
A witness came forward and described an incident that happened
in the fall of 2002. A short, Asian-looking woman came into the
Mammoth Lakes Visitor Center with her husband. The woman told an
employee that her husband abused her, and she was afraid of him.
The employee described the husband as 5-foot, 9-inch man,
175-200 pounds, with brown hair and a bushy mustache. Link
between the wife and Mono County Jane Doe could not be
established due to limited information.
In 2006, the woman on the flyer was identified as Barbara
Pacheco Santiago by her stepmother, who had not seen her for
over seven years. Santiago’s biological parents have been dead
for many years. The stepmother said Pacheco Santiago had two
sons, neither of whom has been located.

Details:
On May 25, 2003, a hiker near The Shady Rest campground in
Mammoth Lakes National Forest, Mammoth Lakes, California,
discovered a shallow grave with skeletal remains scattered
around the area. Investigators estimate that the victim had been
dead for 6 to 9 months. Forensic examination of these remains
revealed two penetrations that were concluded to be consistent
with knife wounds. The victim’s information has been entered
into NCIC and the ViCAP national database.

On May 26, 2003, the skeletal remains of a middle-aged woman of
Zapotec Indian descent was found in a shallow grave near the
Shady Rest Campground in The Mammoth Lakes

be between 30 and 50 years old, was between 4 feet 6 inches and
5 feet tall, and weighed between 80 and 90 pounds. She had long,
black hair and was determined to have had one full-term
pregnancy. She was found wearing a black bra, a pair of cropped
denim spandex pants, black socks, blue leather "Bass" brand
shoes, a "Cold Air Design" coat, a "Jacklyn Smith" brand
wristwatch, a single gold earring, and a necklace/bracelet with
small multicolored beads. She was believed to have been hastily
buried after being killed by unknown, possibly homicidal means.
Isotope testing indicated that she most likely grew up in
Northern Mexico or the southwestern US. She was found to have
originated from the Zapotec Indian community in Oaxaca, Mexico.
A witness claimed that they had seen the woman in the Forest
with her husband, who was belligerent. She appeared to be
fearful of him. He was described as a white, heavyset male, who
was 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed between 175 and 200 pounds
with brown hair and a bushy mustache. Investigators have stated
that her name may be "Barbara Pacheco Santiago".[43]
She was identified in August 2021 with assistance from Parabon
Nanolabs. A suspect, Diego Santiago Hernandez-Antonia, was
arrested and charged with her murder.[44]
