Trunk Lady was located in a steamer trunk (footlocker) located
just off a roadway in Gambrills State Park, in Frederick,
Maryland on August 24, 1982. The trunk had leaves and sticks
scattered over it but it was not hidden. Investigators don't
know how she died, where she died, or who she is. The bones were
found in an area known as the Frederick Municipal Forest. Back
in 1982, it was known as the Frederick City Watershed because
all the water that falls in the mountains drains into the city's
reservoir. In the heat of the summer in August, a man and a
woman were up there looking for mushrooms and they made the
horrible discovery. Forensic dentists have produced a dental
chart that indicates she had work done at a dental school.
Investigators do not believe she is from the Frederick area.

Frederick Police Reopen 'Woman in the Trunk' Cold Case
       Published 02/14 2012 07:08PM
       Updated 02/14 2012 07:39PM
FREDERICK, MD - Police in Frederick have reopened an almost
30-year-old cold case. The challenge? They never identified the
victim who was found badly decomposed in a trunk. Now a new
generation of detectives hopes to bring some justice to "Jane
       Doe".
Two hikers made a gruesome discovery at the Frederick City
Watershed almost 30 years ago. They stumbled upon a steamer
trunk and found a skeletonized body inside.
In 1982, detectives determined the victim was a white woman in
her late teens to early 20's, about 5'4 with a medium build.
She's never been identified and is known as "The woman in the
       trunk".
However, now police are hard at work, breathing new life into
       the cold case.
"Even though they may be considered cold by society's standards,
they're not cold for our standards," says Lt. Clark Pennington
       of the Frederick City Police.
An artist drew a sketch in the 1980's, but now a different
artist will make a digital one.
"I've contacted the old artist. I've contacted the old
detectives, just trying to update and if it there's something
they missed," says Curt Lege, a Frederick City Police detective.
Police also entered her teeth into an online database and are
reexamining stacks of her case files. They believe her teeth may
crack the case because of the amount of dental work. Police
think she may have been a dancer or gymnast due to some wear on
       her hipbones.
"The hope first off is closure for the family. This woman has to
be missed by somebody, so somebody is out there looking for her.
This victim has a family, so we want to fully investigate this
crime, identify who she is, and be able to provide some closure
for the family," says Lt. Pennington.
"That's what we're hoping that we do and we give somebody that
hope and they come forward and give us the information that'll
hopefully identify this person," says Lege.
Police hope a fresh set of eyes will help them solve the case of
the "woman in the trunk" found almost three decades ago.
The new sketch is expected to be completed within a month. This
case has appeared on several national forensic science shows,
such as "The New Detectives" and "Final Justice".

POLICE RELEASE SKETCH ON WOMAN FOUND IN TRUNK
An artist's sketch has given Frederick City Police new hope of
identifying the decomposed body discovered last month on the
       Frederick City watershed.
Inspector Paul W. Mossburg said his office had received only six
inquiries from persons seeking relatives or friends. Police are
checking more than the names provided by the Federal Bureau of
       Investigation.
On Tuesday, August 24, a couple hunting mushrooms found a nearly
new trunk about thirty feet from a dirt road in the heavily
wooded area northwest of Frederick. The trunk had leaves and
sticks scattered over it but was not hidden.
The couple opened the trunk and discovered a body so badly
decomposed that the sex could not be determined visually.
The body and trunk were shipped to the medical examiner's morgue
in Baltimore where it was determined the victim was a white
female, between 30 and 45 years, with brown hair. She stood
approximately 5 feet 3 inches tall and apparently had been dead
since spring. She had undergone extensive dental work including
two crowns on left front upper teeth, a root canal and numerous
fillings. She had one gold-filled tooth on the right upper side
       and several silver fillings.
Police brought in a Delaware State Trooper, R. J. Wysock, whose
specialty is re-creating facial features. Wysock has studied the
skeleton and produced a sketch. While only an artist's
conception, it could aid police in identifying the victim.
Police said the woman's remains were located inside a brown
steamer trunk which had gold-colored fittings and black rubber
hand grips. Police believe the woman possibly was last alive
within a 100-mile radius of the watershed.
The police investigation is being conducted by Inspector
Mossburg and Cpl. Robert A. Servacek.
