The victim was located on August 28, 1991, stabbed and partially
buried, in South Ozone Park, NY. The body, clad in just a
T-shirt and panties, was stuffed in a garbage bag and partially
buried in a small wooded area at Lefferts Boulevard and South
Conduit Avenue, near Kennedy Airport.
She had been stabbed in the chest several times. She had not
been sexually assaulted, and the absence of tattoos on her body
and narcotics in her system indicates she probably was not a
prostitute or a drug addict. She may be a runaway with ties to
California.The owner of the toy shop handed the T-shirts out to
customers between 1978 and 1981.

Monster T-shirt a clue in '91 murder mystery

A T-shirt featuring characters by acclaimed children's author
Maurice Sendak is the best hope cops have to identify a woman
found murdered in Queens 13 years ago.
Her badly decomposed corpse, discovered along S. Conduit Ave. in
South Ozone Park on Aug. 28, 1991, was clad only in panties and
the shirt.
The victim's identity - and that of the killer who stabbed her
six times in the chest and dug her shallow grave - has eluded
police.
But Queens detectives reinvestigating the case are asking
whether anyone recognizes the white T-shirt, which depicts a
scene from Sendak's award-winning 1963 children's book, "Where
the Wild Things Are." The illustration shows the book's main
character, Max, marching with one of the monsters that inhabit a
fantasy island.
Printed below that is "1109 4th St. San Rafael" - the address of
a defunct California toy store that shared the Sendak book's
name, said Sgt. Guisella Rodriguez, commander of the 106th
Precinct detective squad.
Rodriguez said the man who owned the toy store, which went out
of business in 1990, told investigators he printed about 300 of
the shirts and handed them out to customers between 1978 and
1981.
"We believe because of the T-shirt that she might have been a
Californian," Rodriguez said.
Police believe the woman was white or a light-skinned Hispanic,
in her 20s or 30s, about 5-feet-2 and roughly 100 pounds.
The Brooklyn-born Sendak called the reproduction of his artwork
"a complete ripoff" and said he never gave anyone from the toy
store permission to use it or the book's title.
"It's totally surreal," the 75-year-old author, who now lives in
Connecticut, said when told that his characters were found on a
dead woman's clothing. "It's really gruesome. It's giving me the
chills."
