Vernon County Jane Doe was an elderly woman found beaten to
death on May 4, 1984. Her hands were severed from her body,
preventing analysis of fingerprints. It may have been an attempt
       to prevent identification.
Pollen on her clothing indicated she spent time in New Mexico or
       Arizona before her death.
       Characteristics
       - She had brown hair that was graying near the temples.
       - She had blue eyes.
       - She had a vertical scar on her abdomen.
       - She wore full dentures.

       Discovery of the body
The body was found on the night of May 4, 1984, near the town of
Westby, Wisconsin at 11:15. It was found by three teenagers
within 24 to 48 hours after her death. There was extensive
damage to the victim's head, which left her face unrecognizable
until mortuary procedures were conducted. After the case was
broadcast on the news, a couple stated that they had seen a
suspicious man near the location. He was returning to the
driver's seat of a yellow car, believed to be a 1982 Datsun.
When police went to the spot, they found tire tracks from a
hasty U-turn. A broken denture, blood, and a man's watch were
also found there. Because of this evidence, is believed that she
was killed at another location alongside the same road, and that
her body was then taken to the location where she was found.
The victim had been murdered, as she suffered blunt force injury
to her head, which had broken her jaw, an eye socket and the
pair of dentures that she was wearing. There was also
sharp-force trauma to the left side of the head, near the ear.
Her hands had been removed, most likely to prevent
       identification through fingerprint matching.
       Description and clothing
Vernon County Jane Doe was a white woman between 50 and 65 years
old. She had graying brown hair, presumed to have been done in a
perm. She was 5 feet 5 to 5 feet 6 inches (approximately 170
cm). She did not appear to have any unique physical features.
She weighed 150 pounds (68 kg) and had worn dentures, probably
those that were found with her body. The dentures, missing two
teeth, had both raised and indented numbers upon them, believed
to be serial numbers. Despite this, investigators have stated
that serial numbers for the given product were not assigned to
specific recipients, which would not yield clues to the victim's
       identity.
She was wearing a multicolored coat, a black dress decorated
with a blue-and-white paisley print, a blue turtleneck sweater,
and nylon stockings. The brand labels of the clothing had been
removed. There were distinctive buttons on her clothes; these
       had unique stitching.

Catching her killer: New possible lead in Jane Doe case
       Author: Pauleen Le, ple@wkbt.com

       VERNON CO., Wis. -
It's what some say is as close as it gets to a perfect murder.
In 1984, a woman’s body was found brutally beaten on the side of
       a county road near Westby.
Investigators are working on a new tip that could be the one
       needed to catch her killer.
Saturday marks the 29th anniversary of her murder. To this day,
29 years later, she still remains a Jane Doe. The Vernon County
Sheriff’s Department said the homicide rate in the county is
       virtually nonexistent.
“I'm just surprised that someone out there doesn't know who she
is,” said Sheriff John Spears of the Vernon County Sheriff’s
       Department.
On the night of May 4, 1984, three teenagers found a woman's
body off Old Line Road near Westby.
Investigators are still waiting for the DNA results to come back
to see if the two women are related or if it's a tip they need
       to rule out.
In the meantime, they still need the public's help. This is the
most up-to-date information we have on Jane Doe:
Investigators said Jane Doe was in her 50s to mid 60s when she
was found. She had brownish grey colored hair with blue eyes.
She was about 5 feet and a half-inch tall and weighed around 150
       pounds.
Anyone with tips or information should contact the Vernon County
       Sheriff’s Department at 608-637-2123.

       Jewelry: Unknown
Additional Personal Items: Found at one of the scenes was a
Men's quartz Seiko watch (model 8620 0019 serial number 5498).
       Circumstances of Discovery
Between 11:15pm and 11:30pm, three people driving along Old Line
Road saw the victim's body lying at the roadside, about six
miles from Westby, Wisconsin. Her hands were severed at the
wrist and have not been recovered.
The killer made no attempt to hide her body. She had been
bludgeoned to death at another location. A yellow 2-door compant
vehicle was seen in the vicinity.
When the sheriff's deputy arrived on scene at 11:50pm, he
noticed fresh tracks in the gravel indicating a vehicle had made
       a U-turn.
After seeing the news report the murder, a couple stated they
had seen a parked, bright yellow compact car with a man outside
of it. The man was moving around to the driver's side from the
passenger side at about 9:45pm on May 4th. When investigators
checked the area the couple reported seeing the vehicle, they
found a piece of the fractured denture, some blood, and a man's
Seiko watch. The watch's band had separated from the watch at
       one end.
Based upon the tire tracks, investigators theorize that the
suspect had pulled of US Highway 14 and made an attempt to dump
the body when the couple interrupted him. As he drove away, his
tires spun. The car then went south then west on Old Line Road
about three miles and dumped the body.
Investigators believe the victim was not native to the area
where she was found. Over 400 leads have been followed in the
       case.
In May 2018, it was announced that forensic tests on the pollen
on the victim's clothing indicated she was possibly native to
Arizona or New Mexico, or had at least spent time in those
       states.
