A Pair of Severed Legs Found By Butte Hikers Still Baffles
Detectives
by outdooraly
July 19, 2013
It is a scene straight out of the Sopranos; a bag filled with
severed legs ditched on a remote road. The only difference is
this is a true story, not a TV show. And instead of New Jersey,
it happened just outside of Butte, Montana.
I know many hunters, hikers, and anglers who have found strange
things when exploring remote parts of Montana outdoors. This
find is especially disturbing considering it is a clear case of
foul play, and remains a complete mystery over a year after the
discovery. The severed legs were found June 26, 2012, just off a
dirt trail a few miles up Moulton Reservoir Road.
Who do the legs belong to? Where is the rest of the body? How
did they get there? Apparently detectives still don’t have
answers to these questions.
According to a recent news article in the Montana Standard,
Butte police Capt. Jerome McCarthy said there have been no
answers even after a year of investigation. Here is a link to
the full story, some of which is quoted here:
Undersheriff George Skuletich said the case is still actively
being investigated. The lack of new information isn’t due to
lack of effort.
The legs have been examined by the Montana Crime Lab in
Missoula. No match. Police have tried to connect the legs to any
recent missing person cases. No dice. Search dogs combed the
area for the rest of the body. No luck. DNA samples from the
legs have been put on a national data base in an effort to find
a match with millions of other DNA samples. Nada. Zero. Nothing.
“It’s an oddity,” the undersheriff said. “It’s an odd case for
any department.”
What investigators do know about the legs is frustratingly
little.
The legs appear to belong to a white, adult male. McCarthy says
they were severed with a clean cut just below the groin area.
Part of the pants was still on the legs, as well as footwear and
socks, McCarthy said.
McCarthy didn’t release any further details since the
investigation is still ope

Curious case of severed legs found north of Butte remains
unsolved

A police line seals off the side road three miles up Moulton
Reservoir Road where a pair of human legs was discovered by
passers-by on June 26, 2012.
Walter Hinick/Montana Standard
BUTTE – It was on a bright, warm day last summer when two hikers
made a dark and chilling discovery off of a rural road north of
Butte – a pair of severed legs.
The human legs were found in a bag just off a dirt trail a few
miles up Moulton Reservoir Road. It’s the kind of macabre
scenario that would more likely be conjured up in the
imagination of Edgar Allen Poe or Stephen King.
But this is grim reality.
And what makes the situation even grimmer is that the case of
the severed legs is as much of a mystery today as it was when
the legs were first found more than a year ago.
Who put them there? Where’s the rest of the body? Whose legs are
they, anyway? These are all questions investigators in Butte
have been trying to answer since the disturbing find was made
June 26, 2012.
There have been no answers, according to Butte Police Capt.
Jerome McCarthy.
“We’ve had no leads, no tips and no DNA matches,” McCarthy said.
Police truly are baffled.
Investigators never would have thought that there would be such
little information about this case after an entire year. It’s
inconceivable that the discovery of two human legs – a clear
case of foul play – would yield so little clues and information.
Undersheriff George Skuletich said the case is still actively
being investigated. The lack of new information isn’t due to
lack of effort.
The legs have been examined by the state Crime Lab in Missoula.
No match. Police have tried to link the legs to any recent
missing person cases. No connection. Search dogs combed the area
for the rest of the body. No luck. DNA samples from the legs
have been put in a national database in an effort to find a
match with millions of other DNA samples. Nada. Zero. Nothing.
“It’s an oddity,” Skuletich said. “It’s an odd case for any
department.”

Human body parts found north of Butte
By JOHN GRANT EMEIGH Montana Standard Jun 27, 2012
Two hikers made a macabre discovery Tuesday evening when they
found a pair of dismembered human legs — of a white adult male —
near a dirt road north of Butte.
Police don’t have an identity on the victim, and released no
information on how long the body parts had been dumped there.
The legs were reported found about 5:45 p.m. by the hikers about
3 miles north of Daly Street in Walkerville. They were
discovered several yards off the east side of Moulton Reservoir
Road on a narrow dirt road that goes into a gully.
Capt. Doug Conway said there are no suspects.
Detectives and members of the 15/90 Search and Rescue combed
forested and rocky terrain on all-terrain vehicles looking for
more evidence or other body parts. Conway said the search turned
up no new evidence before it was called off around 4 p.m.
Wednesday.
“We are going to reassess the situation (Thursday) and determine
how to continue the search from there,” Conway told The Montana
Standard.
Police have asked for search dogs, which could be available
Thursday.
The legs have been sent to the Montana State Crime Lab in
Missoula for analysis. Conway didn’t know how long the lab will
take to complete its analysis, but he’s hoping the lab will give
the case high priority.
Conway is seeking information from people who may have witnessed
suspicious activity in the Moulton Reservoir Road area recently.
People can call Crimestoppers at 782-7336 or Sgt. Jimm Kilmer at
497-1161. Those who call Crimestoppers may remain anonymous and
could be eligible for a cash reward.
