The skeletonized remains of an African American male were
discovered on Climber's Descent Trail from Cougar Rocks,
approximately 1 mile east of Multnomah Falls.

leather belt (size 32), brown suede leather jacket with sheep
skin collar labeled "Made in Mexico," old style yellow baseball
cap with two inch high black felt letters "NT," and light brown
high top hiking boots (size 9.5).
Jewelry: Unknown
Additional Personal Items: Gold rimmed eyeglasses, taped
together in several places.
Circumstances of Discovery
Hikers discovered the victim's skeletal remains on Climber's
Descent Trail from Cougar Rocks,approximately 1 mile east of
Multnomah Falls.
The state medical examiner could not determine the cause of
death. In 2008, the Smithsonian Institution completed an
examination of the skeleton but were not able to rule out
homicide.
Some sources list the date of discovery as September 14, 1979.

On September 9, 1979, a group of hikers discovered the skeletal
remains of a young African American man on Climber's Descent
Trail from Cougar Rocks, about a mile east of Multnomah Falls,
Oregon. The man was estimated to be between 20 and 35 years old
and was 5 feet 10 inches tall. He had short black hair and
fillings/crowns in his teeth. Weight and eye color could not be
ascertained. The man was found wearing a light forest-green
shirt, denim jeans, a black leather belt, a brown suede leather
jacket with a sheepskin collar, an old-style yellow baseball cap
with 'NT' printed on the front, light brown high top hiking
boots, and gold-rimmed eyeglasses, which were taped together.
Cause of death could not be ascertained, even with an
examination done by the Smithsonian in 2008. Investigators have
not been able to rule out homicide as a cause of death.[41] He
was identified in February 2021 by Parabon Nanolabs as Freeman
Asher Jr. of Portland, Oregon
