RP Structure Guidance

---------------------------------------------------------
Hi all.
As you may or may not have noticed, Torch Zone is starting to
gain a fair following of members. One or two of them have raised
a point to me that we should perhaps have a guide on how to RP
here. So alas I’ve taken it upon myself to have a go at typing
this kind of thing out. Darkenlight and Ajax are more than
welcome to add their thoughts to this and edit what is
necessary.
Spelling, Grammar and Sentence structure
One of the more important rules when it comes to Roleplay is
that posts have proper spelling and a fairly competent sentence
structure, otherwise a lot of important details could end up
being left out and what’s going on can be completely missed.
When forming a post please make sure that it has mostly (all if
possible) correct spelling and grammar using capital letters if
possible, and full stops as a necessary, if your grammar skills
are beyond the regular, than (please and thank you!) they are
also welcomed, the basics are all that are really needed to make
sure that the RolePlay has the ability to flow and is somewhat
understandable though.
Let’s look at something of a bad example of a post.
“Lori slapped Alt”
This is far too short and… is it even a complete sentence? I am
far from really being convinced that it is. Posts like this are
fine rarely if the goings on around you in the thread that you
can work with are in short supply but please, please avoid
making it what you do in a large number or majority of posts.
Also posts like this are undetailed, it doesn’t exactly point
out to the reader why Lori did what she did now does it? And let
us not forget that the posts completely ignores everybody else
that was in the area and could have had a response given to
them. If you post like this a lot, then the chances are that you
will not be receiving many responses and may often be ignored
let’s try a good version of this post shall we?
Lori was aware of what it was that Alt had just been trying
to do her mother, Alt’s reputation for doing what he did to
females that he encountered was more than enough to flare up
Lori’s anger and willingness to completely obliterate the anti
hedgefox. But with her mother close by as well as Madness and
two of the phoenixes, Lori did not want to risk harming anybody
else. “You talk big Alt but all you are is a lot of hot air with
a little control over ice!” she told him in anger as she
attempted to give him a hard slap, but her speed was slow
compared to Alt’s, so he could easily avoid it.
Surely the post size alone makes you stop and think? From this
post we know what Lori is doing, just why she is doing it and we
are also aware that Lori is fully alerted to the environment
around her. She is even noting characters in the background that
she is not directly interacting with because it lets other
players know you are aware of them and will warrant people to
interact with you more.
Fighting
When you jump into fighting or combat with other characters it
is pretty important that you note and respect the ‘writer’ of
your opponent and their decisions of the combat. Avoid landing
hits forcefully on an opposing character, feel free to note the
damage that the hit would potentially cause to the enemy, but
avoid saying that it definitely landed as that is up to the
writer of the character being attacked. The example above covers
a moderately good example of RP combat in a bit.
“You talk big Alt but all you are is a lot of hot air with a
little control over ice!” she told him in anger as she attempted
to give him a hard slap, but her speed was slow compared to
Alt’s, so he could easily avoid it.
Alt’s grin only widened at the fact that he was getting under
the hedgehog’s skin, after all, an opponent with a clouded mind
tends to be an easier one. Lori’s slap hit and unbalanced him a
bit, but he was easily able to recover his balance by
disappearing for a second and reappearing. Alt’s reaction was to
sneer at her despite that he seemed to be unimpressed by her.
“So tell me sweet cheeks. Is that really as hard as you can hit?
Because if it is, then taking Rose away is going to be reeeeally
easy.” He told her as a ball of ice began to form in his right
hand.
Take to the notes that Lori’s attempt to slap Alt did not
actually connect in her post, but more of that it was an attempt
to do so. In Alt’s reply he let the attack connect with him and
showcased the reaction to the attack as well as the damage that
it did.
Do I really need to show you all a bad example of how to go
about this? Yes? Okay.
Lori slapped Alt hard across the face, the slap hitting sent
him flying across the street and he slammed into the wall which
would severely damage his back.
See the difference? Lori’s post saw her forcefully land the
attack and decide the damage that the other character. Bear in
mind that attacks are interaction and both sides have a say in
interaction, if instigating an attack then that is your side of
the interaction, and the result and damage is the interaction
from the other side of the RP.
There is one breakage to this rule however that will be
tolerated in moderation. If you are a series host or sub
host and the post is one of your villains a hit may be landed on
others with good reason for so to be done, try to use it
sparingly though, and keep it to times that such forceful moves
are necessary, if doing it repeatedly and the repeats are
clearly not necessary, users are likely to complain, and if
users complain with legitimate reasons to do so, then mods or
admins will step in to keep order in the OOC flow.
Basic Etiquette
If you choose to put yourself into a thread where you don't
understand what’s going on then go ahead and ask! Perhaps PM a
user already in the thread, the moderators and admin make
efforts to spread their characters across the threads in a
co-ordinated effort to know what is going on, if a mod isn’t
available in the thread then by all means go ahead and ask a
user that’s already in the thread. Avoid being foolish by
assuming that people will ‘cater to you’ in their approach to
the thread after you jump in however, while you will be noted
and interacted with, if a post shocks you or leaves you angry
but follows the rules then take it with a brave face and keep
the RP going, if you’re truly convinced that the post is
breaking a rule though, then remember that every post has a
‘Report to Moderator’ option in the bottom right of it that
users can click to quickly show that they believe that a post is
rule-breaking. The mod and Admin teams will take it from there.
Remember, the thing with a forum is that the RP is not going
anywhere, try to avoid pestering other users for replies to
a thread, they will get to them in their own time after all,
just give them a polite reminder that you are waiting for a
reply from them. If you are getting no response from somebody
for too long then why not just leave them behind and move on to
a new thread if it is just you and them? If there are multiple
people in the thread besides you and them then one of the others
will eventually think to move the thread on without them, but be
fair in such, give them aptle time. Oh and remember, if a user
is being an irritation in how much they tell you to post in a
thread, mods and admin can be alerted, and with the providing of
suitable evidence, will step into the matter.
Respect other people’s decisions! Remember that others on
this forum have the right to their own opinion just as much as
you do. Admins and Mods know the signs that tell being ‘in
character’ apart from being ‘out of character/writer’ and if
they sense insults or badmouthing ‘out of character’ will be
quick to act upon it. Also, please, don’t think you’ll get away
with it if no admin or mods are present when it happens. We can
access anything that goes on around the site. And if the mods
can’t, then the admin will. The same goes for our Shoutbox, as I
for one moderator, always check back through the history of the
shoutbox when logging on. And remember, some of a Moderator's
accounts are not given the Mod tools and look like a normal
account.
I do believe that’s about it. Have fun RPing. ^^
