Military crest

The term military crest is were a flat or not real step section
close to the top of a hill is called. It is followed by a sharp
drop off down to the bottom off the hill. Some might called
these benches as well and I think they could easily be they
same. In this type of area is were deer like to bed and cruise
during the rut. With the crest or bench on the leeward side of
the hill this allows a buck to cruise thru and smell for hot
does and danger without showing himself out in the open. These
are pretty easy to see on a topo map. Depends on the topography
off the hill and the height they could be anywhere from the top
1/3 or 1/4 is what I like to scout but I've also seen then lower
in steeper hills but in the steeper the wind and thermals will
do different things. If you are unsure post a map and we will
mark some for you to help you see them.

You will often hear me refer to the "military crest" as the
"high edge".
