Short Story Contest: Harkon - The Lament of a Silent Guardian
   DIR By: Harkon
       Date: December 30, 2016, 10:01 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       That was Then…
Harkon stood upon a hillside overlooking Duskhaven, just
watching the scenery. The shoreline, the small farms below, the
house that he owned with his small family. It was a small piece
of paradise to him. A smile formed upon his lips as he would
look at a picture resting in his hand. The photo depicted a
young maiden with fair brown hair holding a small child with the
same colored hair… ‘My Family…’ he would say quietly. He would
be pulled from his small daydream though, as a voice would ring
out to the hillside. “ Hark! Irving! It’s time to eat.” as on
the back side of one of the small homes in the valley stood this
same maiden. Upon hearing his name he would smile and in a jog,
make his way down the hillside towards his house. He made his
way closer to the house when suddenly, a child ran up to him and
hugged him by the waist. “ Papa!” he exclaimed. All Hark could
do is smile, and pick him up, holding him close as the maiden
would walk up, His smile would widen then. “ Ahh, Amelia. We’re
here.” he said softly, as he would lean in and place a gentle
kiss upon her lips. All she would do is smile. “ Welcome home,
boys. let’s go get something to eat.” she would say, as they
walked towards the house and inside…
       But…That was then….
It’s raining. Harkon was standing in the same place, overlooking
Duskhaven again… Or where it used to be. He made his way with
haste back to the stead when he heard the Forsaken were
attacking. All he found was water, pure and clear, dancing with
the raindrops. The town was gone, sunk deep within the waters of
the Great Sea. He slumped to his knees, a whimper escaping his
muzzle now. How did it turn out this way? bitten by a feral
Worgen, turned into one now, and to return home to find the home
of his dreams sunken beneath the deep, briny sea. He sighed,
looking down to the same photograph of the fair maiden with his
son. a droplet would appear on it, then another… “My… Family..”
He muttered out. Until a hand was placed onto his shoulder. He
would perk and look up, finding none other than another
villager, who said. “ Hey… The Forsaken are slowly moving up. We
gotta move.”. With a nod and a sigh, he pocketed the photograph,
moving his way towards the carriage and hopping in, as they
       would move on..
       But that was then…
Keel Harbor. A place that he had only visited a few times in his
life. A few times too many, everyone else says. After being part
of the reclamation of Gilneas, everyone had decided that the
only way was to leave Gilneas for good. Hark sat upon one of the
ships ready to depart, leaning down, staring at the same,
tear-stained photograph. before the bell of the ship rang and it
began to set off. He would look up from the picture, back at the
Harbor. “ Goodbye…” Is all he would whisper before all of
Gilneas itself became a small speck on the horizon.
       But that was then…
Years later, worn by the battles and the scars to prove it. Hark
had taken a seat in the Mage Quarter park of Stormwind, to
lament on the same photograph. He sighed, sliding his paw up
over his muzzle. The years had been… a bit great to him, at a
later age of 47, his fur had began to break grey in a couple of
areas, including the scruff of his beard. Suddenly, a commotion
was heard. He would perk up and look, to see that two men were
huddled around this Draenei woman, whom was minding her business
in the park. At least until something happened to a poor
squirrel in the park, which choked up the poor woman. Noticing
that there was trouble abroad, Hark would decide to trail behind
these men who followed the poor girl out side the city. But
something kept him following. The two men had broken off from
her finally, but Hark kept following. The girl was lonely
outside of Stormwind, definitely easy prey for a bandit, so he
kept following. A small twist of fate happened when the girl
turned around and was surprised to find a rather large worgen
following her. “ W.. Wh.. Wh-who are you? “ The girl had asked.
“ W.. Why did you follow me?”. Hark had replied quietly “… I
noticed those two were giving you a rather hard time, Miss… I
felt that if they would have kept with you, they would have hurt
you. But.. where are my manners? My name is Harkon.” he bowed
his head to her then in a more respective manner. “Yourself?”
“I… I’m Alucion.” She exclaimed somewhat nervously. It was
obvious that the two from earlier caused the problem. All he
could do is smile… “Well.. Walking through the forest here alone
is never a good idea… especially without any weapons. Mind if I
join ye’?”. All she did was quietly nod. He would also nod then
and walk beside her down the path towards the small town of
       Goldshire…
       …And this is now.
The flow of time is a fickle one, and passes by ever so swiftly.
On a cold evening in the providence of Westfall, Harkon stood
outside the doors of the new home they had acquired. An excited
smile formed upon his muzzle as he stood by and watched as the
same Draenei he helped many years before chased two little girls
along with a three headed Hydra and a purring lion around in the
larger front yard. Suddenly he looked down to see who or what
was patting him on the leg. All that met his fiery red eyes were
the pretty blue eyes of a little boy who was contently sucking
on a pacifier. Hark smiled and picked him up, holding him close,
as he looked back at the excitement going on before them. He
smiled almost tearing up as he would hug at the little boy “Look
at this Tyrion.”. All the toddler would do is giggle and pat at
him with a reply “Ba!”. All Hark would do is chuckle and nuzzle
him, making him giggle more. Before then, the group of people
that were playing outside were coming towards the door, The
hydra trotting around with a silly looking walk, while the girls
walked up to Hark. “Everyone ready for supper?” He would ask,
and the girls would nod and agree excitedly, before running
inside. He would then look up at Alucion and smile, before they
shared a quick, loving kiss. All he would do is rumble and purr
with a content smile “ My darling.. the moon to my nightsky.”
All she would do is smile and replay with. “ Don’t forget about
the stars too that shine in your sky.” she would then Kiss the
toddler on the forehead and walk inside. Hark would smile then
and turn around, looking at the group walk inside, he would
       whisper softly. “Our Family…”
