Short Story Contest: Evangeline Truelight - 3 flames in the rea
lm of ice
By: Evatruelight Date: December 30, 2016, 3:01 am
---------------------------------------------------------
7 Years ago, in the frozen reaches of Northrend, a lone figure
stood among what appeared to be a war zone.
The figure was a woman in her mid to late 20s with hair of
golden blonde and eyes of crimson. She was cloaked from the neck
down in plated robes of red and purple that were encrusted with
green gems. Her pauldrons, bulky, let off a fiery aura that
melted the snow that would land on this woman. Attached to this
woman's back was a bulwark with the crest of Lordaereon
imprinted on the center. Underneath the bulwark was the sheathe
to a 2-handed daikatana while the sheathe to a smaller kodachi
laid at this woman's waist.
The woman was Lady Evangeline Truelight-Jensen, a noble
Vindicator. A woman who despite her young age had fought many
battles, some victorious, others not so. She let out a tired
sigh, she had faced yet another battle with the Scourge.
Truthfully, they were getting rather tiresome and tedious, yet
she still could not relent.
She was en route from Valiance Keep to Amber Ledge in the Borean
Tundra when she was ambushed by a medium sized group of ghouls.
While their numbers were respectable, Evangeline was able to
make short work of them with her masterful skills with the
burning blade. Still, the battle had taken its mental toll and
the Vindicator had to take a breather.
A portal opened up behind her, though she hardly reacted.
Another woman stepped out from it, this one with hair brown and
eyes blue. This woman wore robes of cloth that were white with
blue trims and red gems embedded into the threading. In her left
hand was an exquisite staff that looked more like a spear with a
golden tip.
This woman was Lina Jensen, childhood friend and spouse of
Evangeline. These two were an inseparable duo in their youth and
not even the test of time could keep these two apart from each
other for long
"Figured it would be easy to track you down" The newcomer said
with a voice full of humor, "Where else would you be but a
battlefield littered with fresh corpses?"
"You know me too well.." Evangeline turned around to face this
newcomer, a small grin on her own face
"Always in battle... always fighting" Lina said somewhat sagely,
"But it wouldn't kill you to take a break every now and then"
"You know why I can't.." Eva countered, "You were there too.."
The event Evangeline referred to happened many years ago, when
Arthas and the Scourge attacked Lordaereon. Evangeline lost her
mother in that attack. Her beloved, treasured mother, died in
her arms. The trauma from that day has been with her since. Not
one night goes by that she doesn't think of it.
"I was" Lina sighed in remembrance. She had nothing but fond
memories of the Truelight matriarch. Having to witness her death
was devastating for her as well.
"We've had this conversation before" Evangeline voiced her
mate's own feelings regarding their discussion, "And this is the
part where you tell me that things have changed"
"And they haven't?" Lina queried right back, "We're not just
mates and spouses, we're parents too"
Evangeline knew full well whom her mate had referred to: their
adopted son, Galderoy. A young, shy boy who's mother was Maya
Stargazer, a departed friend and mentor to Lina. It was Maya's
dying wish that Lina and Eva adopted and raised her kid should
she die and since her death, they've raised Galderoy in her
absence.
"I know... I haven't seen our little boy for years.." Eva sighed
once more, "Not since my exile.."
"There's nothing stopping you now" Lina had to stop short of
commanding her mate, "No bounties... no exile.. nothing"
"I.... I can't" Evangeline shook her head, "My battle isn't
finished..."
"It’s not just your battle” Lina corrected her spouse, “Your
mother, Presea, was a mother to me too. Your pain is mine.”
“You mean to join me?” Evangeline asked, an eyebrow quirked
lightly in curiosity, an odd habit she had picked up in her
youth that never was quite kicked.
“Not just me..” Lina nodded, an ominous grin was plastered on
her face as a sign of her plotting genius, “We do”
Before Evangeline could even react, Lina had tapped her staff
against the ground and created a portal behind her. A familiar
location was on the other side, Eva’s own manor.
“You can come on in, Galdy” The female magus declared with a
grin.
“Galdy?!” Eva stared at the portal, “You can’t mean….”
The Vindicator never was able to finish her sentence. The portal
was activated and the aforementioned young male teen stepped
through, dressed in robe that were black and blue. The boy’s
hair was black and eyes blue, much like his mother.
Evangeline could only stare at her adopted ward, dressed in
black and blue robes with what appeared to be a magic scythe in
his right hand. Part of her wanted to glare at Lina for
bringing their teenage son into this battlefield, but another
part of her was equally anxious to see her son again.
“There’s only so much that Galdy can learn from the tomes in
Library" Lina began to explain her plan, “All of the
simulations, training... they mean little if we can’t give him
the proper experience that a real battle brings.”
“As my mother once said: ‘There is no substitute for
experience.’.” Evangeline reiterated the words of wisdom of her
late mother and instructor, “But to bring our son into a war
with the Scourge and the Lich King? You know as well as I that
the Alliance would never approve of this!”
“They will or they won’t be receiving my aid” Lina countered
with ease.
Lina Jensen, apart from being a very powerful arcanist who held
the rare feat of mastering all 3 schools of magic available to a
mage, was also a well-known, successful strategist. Some have
compared the mastery and skill Lina displayed in planning out a
battle to that of a composer conducting a beautiful symphony.
“Still, these aren’t the Defias bandits from Elwynn forest.”
Evangeline counter-argued once more, “The Scourge are not to be
taken lightly.”
“I’m not heartless enough to make him fight an abomination or a
flesh giant “Lina argued almost childishly, “Ghouls, skeletons,
nerubians, gargoyles. The lesser minions are perfect targets for
him.”
“Um… “Galderoy spoke up for the first time, “Can I say
something?”
“Go ahead” Eva said with a sigh.
“I know I’m still in training, but I can fight” The boy spoke
with confidence, his blue eyes locked firmly with the crimson
orb’s of Evangeline, “Mrs Lina has been instructing me and I
know I can help…
“Besides… if something ever happened to you…. If you got hurt…
or killed” The poor boy had tears falling down his face as he
got emotional, “I.. I don’t know what I’ll do..”
Evangeline sighed once more and took the moment to consider the
situation before her. Her wife had brought their son out into
the frozen depths of Northrend to risk his life. If that wasn’t
enough, Galderoy was dead set on fighting because he was,
understandably, concerned for her wellbeing. Eva was no fool,
she was well aware of how stubborn the two can be as well. Even
if she declined them, they were just as likely to tag along
anyways. It didn’t take long for the pieces to fall into place,
and Evangeline’s mind to be made up
“Fine… you may come” the woman relented with a sigh. Just as
Galdy was about to get excited, the blonde had a stern warning
to air out, “But I will warn you know. You are not to fight
against any Scourge peon higher what Lina just stated”
“Right!” Galderoy saluted in understanding with that
ever-so-adorable childish grin that most kids are prone to.
“Thank you” Lina embraced her wife lovingly, “You won’t regret
this”
“I missed years of being a good mother..” Eva sighed as she
returned the embrace with warmth, “I need to make up for it”
With the loving words exchanged and the pleasantries calming
down, the 3 set up camp a mile away from the battlefield. The 3
spent part of the night discussing their plan of action before
turning in for the night.
As the trio set out for Amber Ledge, Evangeline couldn’t help
but reminisce in the nostalgic presence her situation had
brought up.
“2 mages, 1 Vindicator… Reminds me of the old days ” Evangeline
smirked lightly in amusement, “The “old days”.. I say… Now I
feel old…”
“Evacchi~, you’re too young to feel old” Lina poked her wife in
the cheek, “Though this does bring back memories.. only this
time I’m the instructor and Galdy is the apprentice… I was
Maya’s apprentice back when we travelled together”
“Well, I hope I can be of use to you two, moms” Galdy, the
aforementioned apprentice spoke softly, “I’ll do my best”
“That is all we ask for, dear Galdy~” Lina playfully patted her
boy’s head, ruffling the top of his hair, much to his
embarrassment and Eva’s amusement.
“3 flames in a realm of ice..” Evangeline said, much to their
obvious confusion, “That’s what we are… 3 flames burning warm
and bright in a realm of ice. Cold, dark ice..”
So begins a devastating trio… Through the Northrend campaign up
until Draenor would these 3 fight together. They met friends and
enemies along the way, but those are stories for another time,
another place.
The end.
Footnote: Galderoy here is Lilith in her youth. I referred to
him as male because at this point in Galdy’s life, he had hardly
a thought about romance and was very much more interested in his
studies and helping his parents. It was only in the cusp of
Galdy’s maturity did his feminine side develop and take hold..
Lina Jensen is Eva’s ex-wife, but they are still on great terms.
Lina just went off to travel on her own in search of new magics
to explore.. I apologize for the quality.. I've been needing
something to get my story drive going.. and this might just be
it.. I will get better and who knows, if i get enough time and
drive, there may be more short stories, better than this one..
I'm out... That’s all folks.
