Early History
In 1725, a group of Scottish and Welsh immigrants left Great
Britain in search of religious freedom and a new life. The First
Settlers were small farmers, but they used the vast amount of
land to become planters. Settler Richard Sherman was the crews
leader and set up the colony near the shores of modern day Port
Davis. Sherman named the land the Colony of Columbia, based upon
the traveler Christopher Columbus, whom Sherman deeply admired.
Sherman would remain allied with the Britain, upsetting many,
but the many also fell in line. The population was roughly 7,600
by the end of 1730 and they had expanded northward. A wealthy
farm owner from England named Dexter German came over in 1731
and introduced the population to slavery with roughly 200 slaves
being introduced. Many of the slaves came from North Africa.
After years of Britain rule, in 1774, Columbia declared
independence from Britain. A war was fought until the year 1781.
