I fail to see the relevance of your point in a non-canon rp that
is set in historical times.
Of course, there is alternatives to the Colonial Era. We could
do the Age of Exploration and RP from there if people don't want
to focus on the 13 colony, independence, civil war branch.

I'd rather have a something that existed. I'm not keen on making
an alt history.

Well it could in some ways be alt history, it wouldn't be fun if
it was perfect.

Not keen on making an alt history for my nation :D
I'd rather go with something that has predetermined resources,
equipment, settlements, etc.
