Its actually optional. Its to augment STOL and VTOL and whatnot.

So are Ironclads valid in this day and age? Like they would be
almost ripped to literal pieces if even an old WWII battleship
fired upon them, but could they serve any purpose?

Not really. Modern weapons would probably rip it to shreds.

Sad day.
Speaking of battleships, I understand that its more cost
effective to have missile cruisers, as the damage a missile
deals far outweighs the damage output of any conventional
kinetic launch, but are they really THAT outdated?

Yes and no. The idea of guns blaring on a broadside is out, and
has been out for a while. However, as an actual gunship, it is
wonderful. Furthermore, it acts like a very defendable heavy
artillery piece. Good offense, in that it can fit missiles, and
launch large cruise missiles and ballistic weaponry, and good
defense in that it can destroy large amounts of missiles, can
launch large AA and ABMs, and that it is armored.
It is, however, slow and expensive.

So its more for the sake of cost, rather than impracticality? Or
is it impractical because of cost?

WW2 battleships are impractical and EXTREMELY expensive.
Modern battleships can be worth it, if you know how to use and
finance it.

We don't really talk equipment here, why is that?
