Caos had a good idea, so I brought it over, if this could be
       pinned please.

So I was curious about the validity of Columbia's Steam Tanks,
and I found out that they did exist.

However the biggest flaw, is its projected usefulness. This
thing moves at a rough 3 miles per hour, you could quite
literally walk at the same speed besides this contraption, also
because of the incredibly short range its operational range is
questionable at best. However we could choose to ignore this.

Realistically, it'd also be incredibly impractical. Considering
that you'd need an immense amount of fuel for these things, and
a CONSTANT supply of water, it would make for an interesting
       supply line.

Short story short diesel or more powerful engines are the better
       alternative.

Much like any engine, but that would be a horrible hot box to be
       in

Well, normal engines actually DON'T normally blow up. But unlike
boilers, an internal combustion, piston, or even turbine engine
doesn't actually have to be monitored CONSTANTLY.

So what's the smallest effective runway for an aircraft carrier?

You trying to land an aircraft carrier, or pilot it off the
       runway?
