So, firstly, there was a little bonus chapter! Basically, Yukiji
gets a summer bonus of 1 million yen, only to purchase a load of
lottery tickets and not win anything. Down on her luck, she goes
to Aika about how to get rich, which leads to her learning of
Warren Buffett, the world's no.1 investor, and deciding to
invest her money. She ultimately manages to procure some more
money, and invests it in something that people will still want
in 50 years, as per Buffett's advice... lottery tickets. :P
Also, she calls Hina 'Hinaemon'. X3
       10 Word Summary!
'Yukiji is hilarious, Aika appears, and Warren Buffett is cool.'
447 itself starts with Alice addressing the murderer, to then
cut to the student council trio. Miki and Risa asks Izumi if
she's made any progress towards the video koushien, and explain
that they've already made theirs so as to put pressure on her.
:P What's more, unlike with the terrible videos they made before
(hatching an egg that's not been inseminated, failed Rube
Goldberg machine), they've put in a lot of effort. Miki has the
first footage of a giant squid (and she mentions 2013, which
Izumi complains about XD), and Risa has produced a Studio Ghibli
film. XDXD Izumi remarks that these videos are cheating, as the
budgets are so high and they go beyond a simple home video. She
heads off to make her own, and decides to make it a time-lapse
       video of a fish growing.
Kotetsu quickly points out to her that it won't be as easy as
with a plant, due to fish moving around and being hard to grow.
Izumi mentions the 'promotions' that fishes go through as they
grow, and goes to ask their father for food to promote the fish.
Retrieving some, she feeds the fish, which promptly grows human
arms. :P Initially freaked out, but then impressed, Izumi feeds
it more... until it grabs her arm and tells her that it can't
take much more. It climbs out of the tank and runs, with Izumi
       telling Kotetsu to catch it.
And of course, it's not a murderer but this freaky promoted
man-fish that Alice encounters. :P (also explains why Kotetsu
was around) He says that he loves little girls, but Ikusa
appears and sends him flying with a punch. Alice asks who he is.
Ikusa: I am no one worth naming.
Alice: *pressing the button on her device* It's been ten years
       since I heard that line.
       :o
       10 Word Summary!
'Izumi grows a fish monster, and Alice practically yells
       "henshin!"'

Well, I've been gathering sources from across the manga to try
and work out the over-all plot... I'll be making a post on that
soon... but WOW, this new chapter certainly added to that
       research!
First of all, cute bikini-wearing Izumi cover. X3
We then rewind months (April 29th), to Aika visiting Mikado
about her King's Jewel, with the narration specifically
referencing the events of chapters 201/202 (which is volume 19,
even though the chapter title says it's around volume 15... that
IS when Aika's Jewel gets cleansed by Isumi, though). Mikado
tells her to take the Jewel to Athena in Greece, although Aika
keeps trying to throw the Jewel away. XD
We then see Aika visiting Athena's palace in Greece (this would
have to be the end of the Greece Arc; specifically chapter 266,
though I won't keep referencing chapter numbers. :P She gives
Athena the Jewel, but she immediately becomes frantic, ordering
Machina to take the Jewel and hide. As Aika turns back, she sees
Athena as an unconscious six-year-old. And is VERY confused.
       XDXD
Back in Japan, she scolds Mikado, but Athena (well, she's now
'Alice' as we come to know her) notes that it's the curse of the
King's Jewel. Mikado praises her perception, and explains that
someone who uses the power of royalty once cannot use it again.
Upon trying to, they are cursed and reverted to their state just
after they first used the power. Mikado then corrects himself,
saying her memories and age are sealed, and can be restored. The
two insist to Aika that they're speaking in code, about dinner.
:P Alice observes that Mikado wants to do something without the
interference of 'future' Athena, and asks how Mikado became
aware of the curse; he posits that when you grow old enough, you
discover things by accident. Alice and Aika shrug this off as
senility. :P Furthermore, Aika claims that the Jewel is now
       lost, causing Mikado to panic.
Alice informs Aika that, if they can find a way to restore her
true self for a few minutes, they may be able to devise a plan -
assumedly, this is why we get teen-Athena in chapters 299 and
       300. Back to August 17th, and after asking about Ikusa's cloak,
Alice indicates that the situation with Hayate and Hina was to
lure him out; he responds that she was the one who most needed
help. Alice claims that they have to speak, but specifically he
needs to speak with 'this version of me' and presses the
       charging device.
Lo, teen Athena! Ikusa asks where her clothes came from. :P
       10 Word Summary!
'New plot details emerge, and Athena restores for a while!'
Plot analysis shall come hopefully tomorrow.
       A.

Re: Hayate no Gotoku chapter reviews
By: Ashes Date: May 5, 2014, 10:12 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Warning - wall of text incoming.
Hayate no Gotoku Running Plot Analysis - Part 1
Yes, part 1. Besides the fact that we'll no doubt find out more
elements going forward, there's just so little that I've been
       able to figure out. :P
OK, so we know that Mikado, Athena and Himegami entered the
Royal Garden ten years ago (ch.241 and various others), that
Athena ended up trapped within due to a curse from a god
(ch.263), and that Hayate, and later Ikusa, entered via a King's
Jewel with light in it (ch.178, ch.183, ch.184 and ch.185 for
Hayate; ch.262 for Ikusa). Ikusa saved Athena by slicing the
right pillar, assumedly guided by the Shirosakura (ch.263). It
should be noted that this method is only required for those
       cursed by the god (ch.263).
Athena slept for a year with the Shirosakura (ch.263, ch.264,
volume 24 opening page). During that time, Yukariko entered the
Royal Garden and took the Power of Royalty (ch.261). After that,
Mikado 'snatched [the Royal Garden] away' from Athena (ch.187),
and appears to have not been of any concern until Hinagiku's use
of the name 'A-tan' towards Athena reawakened King Midas, who
tried to influence Athena into reopening the path to the Royal
Garden to check if Ikusa made it out (ch.264). Of course, he
actually wanted to reclaim the Power of Royalty (ch.261), which
he refers to as being his (ch.247).
A King's Jewel, with a light in it, is needed to enter the Royal
Garden (ch.263). In addition to this, a burst of negative
emotion is needed (ch. 255, ch.435). This is according to the
enscription in Mykonos (ch.435), although the bit we here
translated courtesy of Isumi (ch.216) only mentions the method
of escape, the same one Athena describes to Ikusa (ch.263). (as
a side note, although this is likely due to different subbers,
Isumi refers to 'the sword of justice' while Athena states
'denote justice using a sword'. The Shirosakura is referred to
as the sword which represents justice by Athena in ch.182.) We
also know that those cursed attempting to use the Power of
       Royalty cannot touch a King's Jewel with a light in (ch.263) -
doing so reverts them to their physical and mental state at the
time of the curse being placed on them (ch.448).
Hakuou Academy is built in the same location as the entrance to
the Royal Garden (Izumi suggests Hayate being in that area as
he'll be 'starting here as well' come Spring, and that she'll
see him at school, in ch.183; Hayate visits the area after
leaving the Royal Garden for the last time, and finds a
construction plan notice for Hakuou Academy, in ch.186), and not
only does the Tennos family own the Academy (ch.232), and of
course Athena is the head of the family (ch.233), but Mikado is
one of the five members of board of directors (ch.232).
       - Mikado -
It's indicated that he has a desire to bring back Yukariko, as
he observes her picture and holds a King's Jewel while Nagi
narrates that a certain person may not know that she cannot come
back no matter how much money is spent (ch.123). This may well
be his drive to gain the Power of Royalty - to resurrect (and
previously, to heal) Yukariko. However, it seems he had plans
beyond simply stealing the Power of Royalty alongside Athena and
Himegami - when trying to locate a candidate to open the path to
the Royal Garden, he meets Hayate (ch.435) and hands him a
King's Jewel before lying to Athena that he didn't find a
candidate (ch.436). Evidently, he was using Hayate as a failsafe
or back-up. We don't know what circumstances occurred within the
Royal Garden when he, Athena and Himegami entered, and if
Athena's curse was intended by him, but it certainly seems
far-fetched that Mikado knew that Hayate would run into the
Royal Garden if he ran randomly while upset.
His plotting seems to continue in the story's present, as he
first hands Aika a King's Jewel while noting that they 'can be
tamed' as evidenced by Hayate (ch.152), before, upon Aika
attempting to return it to him, ordering her to take it to
Athena, evidently aware that it would revert her to her
       6-year-old self upon contact (ch.448).
However, there is one odd circumstance which I'm going to put
       into a separate section...
       - The Sanzenin Family Inheritance -
There are multiple contenders for the Sanzenin inheritance,
including Nagi (ch.014), Gilbert (ch.014) and Hisui (ch.384).
Nagi, as the only direct relative of Mikado out of those three
(Gilbert being an illegitimate half-brother to Sakuya, who is of
the same relation to Mikado as Nagi, and Hisui being his niece),
was initially due the inheritance herself. Mikado’s intention
seemed to be to have the inheritance fall into the hands of
another just to spite her; the original condition for Nagi to
lose the inheritance was for her to cry (ch.014), and they
generally share an antagonistic relationship. Mikado also
claimed that Nagi may die due to those after the inheritance
(ch.014). However, it seems that, as with all of Mikado’s
actions, there is more to it than that.
Come the Greece Arc, he suddenly changes the conditions of the
inheritance (ch.220) – now, the King’s Jewel that Hayate wears
has to be taken for 24 hours (ch.226) or destroyed. One would
assume that this is part of his manipulations, and he wished for
the stone to either be taken or destroyed. Ultimately, Nagi
shatters the King’s Jewel (ch.252), disqualifying herself from
the inheritance. (of note is that Regiostar claims that Nagi has
been ‘blessed by money’ more than Hayate knows while implying
that she will not be living in the Violet Mansion for long
(ch.278)) At a more recent point, however, Mikado has shown an
interest in Nagi returning to a position of regaining the
inheritance – this requires Hayate retrieving another King’s
Jewel (ch.389). Again, this partially seems like a ploy by
Mikado involving the jewels; however, it is also noted that, at
present, the inheritance will go to Hisui if he were to die
(ch.384), and that he does not want it to go to her (ch.433).
Around he same time, it is observed that Mikado’s health is
failing him (ch.380), that he is the one who will die in the
fight for the inheritance (ch.384), and that he will not allow
himself to die until the inheritance issue is resolved (ch.383).
Nagi even claims that Mikado will help them find a Jewel as ‘his
great wealth could destroy him’ (ch.433). The fact that Mikado
wishes to talk to Hayate about the inheritance (ch.387, with the
conversation delayed until ch.389) makes it appear that it is of
greater importance than just a guise for Mikado to play with
King’s Jewels, although the eventual explanation leads to the
previous statement about Nagi needing to find a new Jewel. It
should also be noted that Nagi, by regaining a King’s Jewel,
will regain rights to the inheritance but will not return to
being first in-line; Mikado also mentions a “final game” which
he shall explain once Nagi has a new King’s Jewel (ch.389). So
it truly does seem that, on Mikado’s end, the inheritance is
just a way of controlling who has King’s Jewels.
       - Hisui Hatsushiba -
For Hisui, however, there is more confusion. As a general rule,
it seems as though her intentions, via Yozora, are towards the
Royal Garden, rather than the Sanzenin inheritance. Yozora
searches the Violet Mansion (ch.287), which is later learnt to
have previously contained some ancient power (ch.368, ch.371).
The finding of the photo of the 28th is a big concern, and
Yozora claims that it pertains to ‘the secrets of that land’
(ch.294), as well as that it is Hayate’s fault that she needs
the photo due to Nagi destroying the King’s Jewel (ch.299).
Interestingly, she notes that the important part of the photo is
missing (ch.299) – and we later find this missing piece,
identified as a young Himegami (ch.370). Yozora quickly arrives
when Hayate and co. discover the mystery room in the Violet
Mansion and its coffin, containing the Himegami part of the
photo; she notes that it is extra work, although whether she
means the coffin or the photo (which only Isumi sees) is unclear
(ch.369). Then there’s the talk of candidates – that Mikado took
ten years to find Hayate and Athena and that neither can now
open the pathway, and that Ruka is the new candidate (ch.367).
Since Mikado was working with Athena on Hakuou Academy, and
could easily keep tabs on Hayate, one would assume this pertains
to taking ten years to find candidates to enter the Royal Garden
when he, Athena and Himegami initially entered. Incidentally,
Yozora did not recognise Alice as being Athena (ch.368). Ruka
loses her candidacy after resolving her issues, and Yozora
claims that ‘finding the person we need isn’t easy’ (ch.433).
The confusion comes with the fact that Hisui would gain the
inheritance if Mikado were to die, and that he does not want her
to gain it. This is backed up by Yozora claiming that everyone
is afraid of Hisui, before Hisui herself suggests they go to
‘speak with him a bit’ (ch.433). This makes it seem that she
desires the inheritance – she wants to visit him to convince him
(or terrorise him) into handing over the inheritance. Of course,
she could even have Yozora kill him, and she would immediately
gain the inheritance… the fact that she does not is interesting.
The significance is in Mikado not wanting Hisui to gain the
inheritance, as it implies that it would be bad if she did. If
all of this is related to the Power of Royalty, then actually
gaining the inheritance would be of little value (unless, of
course, Mikado having ‘snatched’ the Royal Garden could mean
that it falls under the inheritance). There is the possibility
that Mikado is simply playing up his dislike of Hisui as related
to the inheritance, to spur on Nagi’s regaining of a King’s
Jewel for his own use. In any case, the need to have Nagi once
again in-line for the inheritance after so desiring removing her
indicates that the Hisui problem has crept up recently (coupled
with Yozora only appearing once Nagi moves into the Violet
       Mansion).
       - King’s Jewels -
The King’s Jewels are, as stated previously, used to enter the
Royal Garden, and can only perform this when they have an inner
light. We have seen four King’s Jewels so far…
       - one is handed to Hayate by Mikado, and is stated to give his
life worth (ch.014). This is the Jewel that later becomes the
avatar of the Sanzenin inheritance being in Nagi’s favour
(ch.220) and ends up being destroyed by Nagi herself (ch.252).
Isumi sees an image of what seems to be King Midas in this Jewel
       before cleansing it (ch.027).
       - one is handed to Aika by Mikado after becoming aware of
Isumi’s cleansing and observing that ‘the power can be tamed’
(ch.152). It is first seen and held by Aika when she claims that
there are ‘a lot of situations where money is no use’ (ch.146),
and is later cleansed by Isumi (ch.153). Aika returns the stone
to Mikado, but he instead asks her to take it to Athena,
triggering her curse and returning her to her state when first
cursed; during this, she hands the Jewel to Machina and orders
him to hide where no one will find him (ch.448). Machina is
found and taken in by Sakuya. (ch.408).
       - one that Mikado handed to Hayate ten years ago, while in the
guise of Santa (ch.435/436). This Jewel is unknowingly used by
Hayate to enter the Royal Garden several times, before handing
it to Ikusa (ch.287). Ikusa uses it to enter the Royal Garden,
and it is currently still in his possession – Hayate is aiming
to retrieve this Jewel to reinstate Nagi as a contender for the
       Sanzenin inheritance.
       - one that Mikoto previously owned, before handing it to Wataru
(ch.218). She refers to it as ‘a secret stone of only three
people’ and tells him to keep it secret, especially from the
       Sanzenin family.
Mikado claims to have had nine Jewels when he originally
obtained them, but has lost three of them, including the one
destroyed by Nagi. The remaining six are ‘missing due to various
reasons’ (ch.389). One would assume that the other three would
all count as missing, meaning that of the remaining five, two
have been destroyed or otherwise deemed lost and three are
missing. However, it should be noted that, in multiple locations
including the Royal Garden (ch.179, 182, 184, 186), the Violet
Mansion’s mystery room (ch.371) and a hall in Mikado’s mansion
(ch.387), there is a diagram depicting twelve symbols, four of
which are seen within the four King’s Jewels we have seen.
Hayate ponders if this means there are twelve Jewels in total
       (ch.371).
Maria also notes that the King’s Jewels were found by Yukariko
when she was a child, playing in the Sanzenin treasure
storehouse (ch.199). She refers to them (or rather, Hayate’s
alone) as ‘legendary treasure of the Sanzenin family’, which
implies that they have been in the family for generations and
were left in the storehouse. Hatsuho is shown with Yukariko in
the panel of her finding the Jewels, and along with Mikoto’s
mention of ‘three people’, I wonder if Yukariko may have taken
three Jewels for herself, Hatsuho and Mikoto before Mikado found
the remaining nine. As Mikoto was not present at the time, she
may not have known of the other nine Jewels not involved in her
friendship with Yukariko and Hatsuho. This would mean that the
stone now possessed by Wataru would be additional to the nine
found by Mikado, and that there are a further two – one that,
assumedly, Yukariko used when entering the Royal Garden, and one
owned by the Saginomiya family. Nagi’s explanation of the King’s
Jewels as stones of bonds, forged by a king from the power of
the stars to test greed and gives shape to strong feelings of
protection is indicated to be a story from Yukariko herself,
which would imply that Yukariko passed down a specific tale of
the Jewels for a certain purpose.
When discussing the Royal Garden, Mikado asks Athena if she can
remove the barrier on the Jewels (ch.241). Assumedly, these
barriers are what Isumi removed from Hayate’s and Aika’s stones.
However, in the same discussion, Mikado asks if someone managed
to enter the Royal Garden without a Jewel, seemingly in response
to Athena stating that she cannot purify the Jewels. Of course,
if he still had most of his Jewels at the time and they were all
impure, he would have no reason to suspect that Yukariko had one
she could use, but it is also possible that she entered by some
other method. However, the idea that she took three of the
twelve Jewels as a child would explain both her entry to the
Royal Garden and the absence of three when Mikado found them,
with Mikado not being aware of these three Jewels explaining his
confusion as to how the Royal Garden could be entered without
one of the nine stones he has or had.
A brief note – when Mikado hands Hayate his first stone, he
notes that he has eight more. Apparently, the King’s Jewel he
gave then was the first one he gave away.
       - The Royal Garden -
The existence of the Royal Garden is very confusing. It is said
to be the castle where god lives, and contains the Power of
Royalty. Hayate notes the royal naming despite it being god’s
castle (ch.181) – this would seem to imply King Midas at first
thought, but he is never referred to as a god, merely an
‘honoured spirit’ (ch.246). He claims that the Power of Royalty
is his, but this could be a false claim. His presence in the
Royal Garden could also imply that he had tried to take the
Power, which he believed to be his, and failed in doing so,
becoming trapped. There is no apparent reason for him to leave
within Athena; nor, indeed, for the spirit of a European king to
be residing in a mysterious castle in Japan.
There are multiple areas of the castle mirrored elsewhere.
Athena’s Grecian mansion contained a grand hall similar, if not
identical, to that of the castle, although this may have been
simply part of Midas’ plan requiring a facsimile (ch.254).
However, the coffin and its chamber are also mirrored within the
Violet Mansion and its mystery room. It seems as though the
coffin in the mystery room has been there for over thirty years,
so it cannot be the same one unless it was briefly sequestered
into the Royal Garden. One possibility is that they are
literally the same room – one room within two distinct
locations, accessible from both the Royal Garden and the Violet
Mansion. If you include the grand hall of Athena’s mansion, you
could go further and presume that all of the Royal Garden’s
rooms are duplicated elsewhere (or the other way around; that
the palace may be a composite of various locations). I shall
       address the other possibility shortly.
The Royal Garden also possesses multiple other elements. The 365
       pillars of Abraxas are one of these (first named in ch.182);
‘Abraxas’ seems to be a Greek word pertaining to a theistic
being of great significance, which imparts great importance on
the pillars. The Shirosakura (named the Hokuou in the original
weekly publication) is also stored here, seated in the head of a
bird statue (ch.182). It should be noted that not only does
Ikusa draw the sword when he decides to rescue Athena, but there
is an image of the statue crumbled, assumedly after the sword is
drawn (volume 17 opening page). The sword is left with Athena
once she is deposited outside of the Royal Garden, and is later
shown to be stored within Machina (ch.258). It is now within
Hinagiku’s possession. The Mirror of the Celestial Sphere is
also within the Royal Garden (ch.181). Hayate observes that the
castle feels as though it was not made for humans to live in
(ch.181). It is stated that the path to the castle is locked
(ch.187, ch.241), apparently after Yukariko entered and took the
Power of Royalty. It is also peculiar that there would be a
mural talking about the Royal Garden in Mykonos (ch.216); more
significant, perhaps, is that it is in a labyrinth under a villa
owned by the Sanzenin, and that the button used to enter the
labyrinth has a ‘don’t push this button’ sign seemingly written
by Yukariko herself (ch.215/216). One last point of observation
       – as King Midas materialises for the first time, the coffin
       shakes and shudders (ch.185).
       - The Violet Mansion -
When the Violet Mansion is introduced, we learn two facts about
it – that Yukariko gave it to Klaus around 30 years ago, and
that she in turn received it from ‘someone rich who she got
along well with’ (ch.270). With the discover of the mystery room
and its coffin (ch.365-368), Isumi hypothesises that the coffin
was once used to store a great power and that those guarding it
lived in the building; at some point, the power was ‘lost’, and
the guardians lost their reason to live in the building, hence
it being passed onto Yukariko for safe-keeping (ch.371). At the
same time, Isumi presumes that its power was so great that it
‘turned the land into an area of great mystical energy’ (and
notes that the power cannot be allowed to fall into the wrong
hands). This is hinted at when Alice first enters the Violet
Mansion; she notes that the room she wishes to live in is a
strong power spot and only requires the Shirosakura to restore
her lost memories and powers (ch.302). This is expanded upon,
taking in Isumi’s explanation, at a later point, when Alice
explains that the Violet Mansion is where ‘a great family once
sealed a great power’ which fills the area, and that a similar
power (depicted as the Shirosakura) is needed to draw it out,
comparing it to the + and – on a battery (ch.437).
My other theory about the dual coffins is that the content of
the Royal Garden coffin was not, in fact, the Power of Royalty
itself. The contents of the Violet Mansion coffin were evidently
‘lost’ thirty years ago, possibly to be stored away in the Royal
Garden? Further, the Royal Garden coffin would have no reason to
shudder upon Midas’ appearance if it was the Power of Royalty
itself. One could almost assume that the coffin is Midas’
himself (after all, when Isumi explains the Violet Mansion
coffin, a shadowy figure is depicted within it), except for the
fact that Athena wonders if someone has ‘taken the interior of
the coffin out’ (ch.187). The only out-right indication that the
Power of Royalty is stored within the coffin is when Mikado
makes reference to it possibly being taken, with the coffin
itself being shown in the panel (ch.241). This would mean, of
course, that the Power would then assumedly have been taken from
the Violet Mansion coffin and stored in the Royal Garden, which
is an unusual scenario as one would assume that the Royal Garden
would be the definitive home of the Power of Royalty. It should
be noted that the Power of Royalty is first mentioned by Sonia,
as a wealthy Sanzenin treasure that can be obtained with a
King’s Jewel and which Himegami is rumoured to have been fired
for trying to obtain (ch.225). Of course, her sources may be
       incorrect.
A few further points of interest: firstly, Hayate notices both a
murderous intent (ch.270) and an inhuman presence (ch.271) when
first at the Violet Mansion, but after the incident with
Yukariko’s cat (ch.274-276), he assumes that it was the cats
that he had sensed. It is only after the mystery room is found
that Hayate wonders if it was the strange aura that he had
sensed (ch.368). Secondly, there was previously a barrier around
the mystery room (ch.367); however, Isumi breaches it (ch.368).
Lastly, there was a photo of ‘the 28th’ stored in the Violet
Mansion. Interestingly, although the photo was torn, both parts
were within the building; while the bulk of the photo was hidden
in a book found by Chiharu (ch.291), the portion showing a young
Himegami was stored in the empty coffin (found in ch.369,
identified and destroyed in ch.370). As Maria previously
referred to Himegami as ‘kun’ (ch.047), indicating that he is of
a similar age to her, it is highly unlikely that the photo was
placed in the coffin thirty years ago when the contents were
removed. Alice also refers to the Violet Mansion as ‘truly
       Himegami’s land’ (ch.437).
       - Akane Himegami -
We still know very little about Himegami. He served as Nagi’s
butler for a while before quitting (according to Maria) or being
fired (according to Sonia). He was also involved with Mikado and
Athena in trying to steal the Power of Royalty (ch.241),
although he is not seen with them when they are shown trying to
locate a candidate for entering the Royal Garden (ch.435/436).
This indicates that he was the chosen candidate. Further to
this, the fact that he was in a photo marked 28, which could
imply that he was one of at least 28 candidates (of course, it
could be completely unrelated). As noted, Yozora claims that the
photo is connected to the secrets of ‘that land’, assumedly the
Royal Garden, and that the part of the photo containing Himegami
itself (‘the important part’ (ch.299)) is stored within the
Violet Mansion coffin. It seems as though the photo was torn and
Himegami’s part planted in the coffin as a clue for anyone
trying to locate the absent power. Himegami shall surely be
introduced to us sooner or later, and more of his mystery should
       be unravelled then.
       - Ikusa Ayasaki -
Ikusa provides more mysteries. Although he rescued Athena from
the Royal Garden, he apparently vanished shortly after those
events (ch.264), and Kurosu later notes that she had met a
patient a few years ago, fitting Ikusa’s description, who had
amnesia that she failed to cure (ch.437). When Hayate and co.
later meet Ikusa, he shows that he remembers Hayate as a
six-year-old child (ch.443); with his inability to have
comprehended that Hayate would have grown, it seems to be a
symptom similar to that shown when the cursed Athena touches a
second King’s Jewel, as in his physical appearance and memories
have been rewound and as far as he’s concerned, there has been
very little time (or none at all) in which Hayate could have
grown. As Athena does not know what happened in Ikusa’s escape
of the Royal Garden (ch.263), it is possible that Ikusa wound up
cursed, and eventually came into contact with another King’s
Jewel, rewinding his mind. The fact that he seems to recognise
Alice as the young Athena (ch.447/448) also indicates that he
still recalls the events of the Royal Garden. Interestingly,
when Athena is briefly restored to her true self to discuss a
more permanent solution with Aika (ch.448), she visits Hayate
and asks if he knows where Ikusa is (ch.300). This indicates
that she knew he was part of the solution, or at least that this
would potentially be her last chance to talk with him about
whatever she needs to talk about. Indeed, it is noted that they
need to talk with her in her true form (ch.448). Lastly, what
may be a coincidence or something much more, when Hayate rushed
to Ikusa after leaving the Royal Garden for the last time, Ikusa
       was helping Yukariko (ch.187).
       - Yukariko Sanzenin -
I’ve already covered most of the relevant points with Yukariko.
Mikado seems to want to bring her back, Ikusa was helping her
just before Hayate approached him having left the Royal Garden,
she found a King’s Jewel (or all of them) in the Sanzenin
treasure house, she appeared to have left the ‘don’t push this
button’ sign in the Mykonos villa, that she apparently told Nagi
that the King’s Jewels test greed and give shape to feelings of
protection, that she took the Power of Royalty from the Royal
Garden shortly after Ikusa resuced Athena from it, and that she
received the Violet Mansion from a rich friend without
(apparently) being aware of its history. Yukariko appears to
have been a truly altruistic woman, so her taking the Power of
Royalty is assumedly not for her own sake. What purpose it
serves for her is, of course, unknown. It should be noted that
Yukariko passed away eight years before the present (ch.123),
making it two years after she would have taken the Power of
       Royalty.
       - Maria -
Maria’s history is quite confusing. She was left abandoned as a
baby, assumedly found on Christmas eve (ch.089). This would
assumedly be some 17 years ago. We see her at age seven when
Athena looks into the Mirror of the Celestial Sphere (ch.181) –
she appears to be in Mykonos, although that is no certainty.
Athena explains that the mirror only shows people that the
viewer knows, indicating that she knows Maria. She was a child
prodigy who was student council president of Hakuou Academy at
ten years of age (ch,160), and went on to serve as first Nagi’s
tutor, and then her maid (ch.199). It should be noted that in
this flashback, Maria appears to be older than her student
council president days, although this could be due slight
differences in the art, of her different hairstyle and clothing.
What is perhaps most peculiar is the depiction of Mikado leading
a young Maria into a library (volume 9 opening page). This
library is most definitely not that of Nagi’s mansion (ch.047),
and may very well be in Mikado’s mansion instead. Maria is
evidently known to both Mikado and Athena… could it perhaps even
be possible that she was another candidate for opening the path
to the Royal Garden? And could it be that Mikado was involved in
the hiring of both Maria and Himegami, so as to keep an eye on
them? With the suggestion that Hayate will leave Nagi on
December 24th (ch.404) and the conspicuous absence of Maria on
the connecting artwork across the volume releases’ spines, it
seems that Maria’s past shall come to light in the final arc.
And I do wonder if there’s more to the fact that people always
assume that she’s older than she is…
Two additional things. Firstly, after initially stating that she
won’t be returning to Japan (ch.264), Athena later claims that
she will have to return there after all (ch.266). As she still
has her adult appearance, this is assumedly before her cursing,
which means she had another reason to return. Also, the face of
Aika’s fiancé and butler (first seen in ch.377) has remained
obscured so far… although his hair is obviously white, there is
a possibility that this is a character we already know. It may
be Himegami, although alternatively, he may be working with
       Hisui.
Anyway, this became very drawn out (future additions shall of
course be smaller – I had almost 450 chapters’ worth of material
to note here :P), so I’ll summarise with this…
Mikado desired the Power of Royalty to heal Yukariko. To that
end, he and Athena hunted for a candidate to open the path to
the Royal Garden – Mikado found Hayate, and gave him a King’s
Jewel without informing Athena. The two later found multiple
candidates, including Maria and Himegami. In the end, Himegami
was chosen, but the quest into the Royal Garden failed as Athena
was cursed and Mikado and Himegami were forced to abandon her.
Eventually, Ikusa obtained Hayate’s King’s Jewel and rescued
Athena from the Royal Garden, by using the Shirosakura and the
Power of Royalty. Ikusa vanished shortly after – perhaps on a
mission related to the Power, or perhaps being sent off by
Yukariko – and Yukariko entered the Royal Garden, taking the
Power of Royalty. Athena remained sleeping for a year, finding
the path closed once she awoke. From here, it seems that she and
Mikado uses Hakuou Academy as a means of keeping the location of
the path free from investigation. Yukariko passed away two years
after obtaining the Power of Royalty; what she did with it is
unknown. At some point, Ikusa touched another King’s Jewel and
lost his memories of the past several years.
More recently, Mikado has performed various plans involving the
King’s Jewel, using the Sanzenin inheritance as a mask to try
and have Jewels destroyed and recovered. While his true
intentions are unknown, as the Power of Royalty is no longer in
the Royal Garden, it is apparent that Hisui, too, wishes to
enter the Royal Garden, and has Yozora attempting to remove any
evidence hinting towards it from Hayate and the others. Mikado
doesn’t want Hisui to have access to the Royal Garden, and his
attempt to have Hayate retrieve a new King’s Jewel for Nagi
could be more about regaining some control over the situation.
Of course, with what Sonia mentions about the Power of Royalty,
it and the Sanzenin inheritance could possibly be one and the
       same, or at least connected.
Lastly, there is the Violet Mansion – previously used to store a
power that may be connected to the Power of Royalty, or indeed
be it itself, which vanished thirty years ago. More recently, an
image of Himegami, circa the attempt to find a candidate, was
       placed within the Violet Mansion.
That’s about all I can gather for now – which just goes to show
how incredible and frustrating this manga is. XD Updates shall
come – I’ll use every new bit of information to enhance and/or
correct my theory. I have all the information I need right here
       – I’ll be able to quickly apply new information without having
to try hard to recall older elements. I’ll work this thing out
       as quickly as possible.

Chapter 449! Hayate and Hina have made their way out of the
cave, and after noting that they have no idea where the spices
are... they find a sign to the spices. :P Hina continues pushing
on towards her confession... although she keeps using ridiculous
methods that Hayate doesn't understand (and oh my god, the way
she acts X3). She even gets tips from a mental image of Aika,
and asks Hayate if he'll make her breakfast every day, but he
reminds her that he already does. XD They reach the abandoned
village, and Hayate notes that he may be able to find food for
her - she protests that she's not actually hungry, but her
stomach grumbles (and oh my god, the way she hides her face X3).
He heads off, while Hina finds a diary - the last pages are the
person stating that they will just confess their feelings to the
one they love. The diary ends there.
She then finds a second diary where the person is distraught at
being rejected. Hina praises the fact that Hayate's so dense. :P

       450!
Nagi, Maria and Hina on the cover. Hina looks adorable. X3
There's a competition to potentially win some of Kenjiro Hata's
possessions that he's getting rid of, like a PS3 and an Xbox
       360. XD
Coloured title page! With Hayate, Nagi, Izumi and Saki...? And
Izumi's in maid clothing. Right... XD
Anyway, the chapter itself has Athena and Ikusa confronting one
another. Ikusa evidently doesn't remember her, and keeps giving
her nicknames based on her appearance. :P She tries to use
memory-restoring hammers on him, but he insists on breaking
them. Athena remarks that she needs to know if he stole the
Power of Royalty (with visual confirmation that it was stored in
the Royal Garden coffin), and he remembers being confronted by
Yukariko, who advises that he take Athena to the hospital or the
police and goes to enter the Royal Garden herself, noting that a
friend is there, waiting to be rescued. However, the memory
fades out again before he can say more, and when Athena goes to
use more hammers on him, he claims that if it's so easy to
restore old memories, they can't be important.
This angers Athena, who explains his rescue of her ten years
ago, and Ikusa again recalls trying to call a police officer
over, while holding Athena in one hand and the Shirosakura in
the other... and being mistaken for a kidnapper. XD When Athena
awoke (evidently not a year later...), she can't find Ikusa
because he's being arrested nearby. :P Ikusa notes that he saves
people every day and doesn't remember everyone, but Athena
pleads with him to remember, as she wants to say thanks.

Re: Hayate no Gotoku chapter reviews
By: Ashes Date: May 27, 2014, 8:35 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
451 starts with Ikusa apologising to Athena for not remembering
their meeting, and Athena says it's OK as she's able to work out
enough from what he does remember. She also warns him of
Hayate's tenacity and that he most likely will regain the King's
       Jewel.
Hayate and Hinagiku continue searching the abandoned town,
unsure of what the spice is (Hina thinks it's a herb, Hayate
wonders if that means it's a flower or a leaf... or a root...
XD). Hayate suggests they look for a clue in the town, and when
Hina gets scared at the idea, he assures her it'll be fine as
they've already done the 'scared of ghosts' bit and it's getting
annoying, so they should omit it. :P
In short order, Hina is confronted by a ghost, who Hayate
subdues. The ghost doesn't know where the spice is, but soon
enough there are several ghosts all sat there, who explain the
legend that the pirates stored the spice in a booby-trapped
cavern. Hina is surprised that they'd have spice as their
treasure - Hayate notes that the Ancient Romans used salt as
salary, hence the 'sal' in salt, and leaves it at that. XD The
ghosts are concerned about the traps, but Hayate's impassioned
talk fires them all up. As Hayate and Hina head to the cave,
they notice a rope on the ground... and set off an infrared
intruder system. XD Boulders are released, but Hina slashes
through them with Shirosakura and they continue on...
And find that the spice is a boxed brand. They leave it behind.

Re: Hayate no Gotoku chapter reviews
By: Ashes Date: June 3, 2014, 9:00 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
452, I'll be quick with this one.
Chiharu and Kayura are bathing at the hotel (Kayura doesn't
recognise Chiharu without her glasses), and as they leave, they
note how the place is so full of activities. You just can't get
       bored there.
Unless your name is Nagi. :P
Hayate and Hinagiku's prolonged absence is discussed - Ayumu
ponders if he's confessed to her, though Chiharu proves herself
a telepath and assures her that's not happening. Nagi orders
Chiharu to get her some Haagen-Dazs, although Chiharu refuses,
and Nagi decides to establish a game to decide who goes to get
the ice cream. She comes up with object shiratori, in which not
only does each person have to find a word starting with the
character that the previous word ended with, but must also show
       the thing itself.
Of course, Ayumu's are all really simple, Kayura's are all
obscure anime CDs and Maria's are all descriptions of Nagi. :P
All the while, Nagi tries to make things difficult for Chiharu.
Eventually, Nagi is left with 'ha' and chooses 'Haagen-Dazs'. At
this point, they just purchase the Haagen-Dazs. :P But Nagi sees
something as they leave the convenience store... cliffhanger!
       10 Word Summary!
'Nagi starts up a game of object shiratori, cue madness.'
Bonus points for Chiharu and Nagi foot content. :P

Nagi sees the hotel's sign, and decides to visit the front desk.
Meanwhile, Hayate and Hina return (Hina notes that they really
did have to deal with ghosts and pirates XD), and Hayate gets to
work on making the curry, insisting it'll sell. Ayumu offers to
help, and he orders her to take the empty boxes and bags out.
All the while, Chiharu asks Nagi what she's up to, and she notes
that she's finding out how much money the hotel makes.
Ayumu tries to find somewhere to put the rubbish, only for Ikusa
to approach her. She freaks out, but he offers to take the
rubbish where it's supposed to go; Ayumu remarks that he's
actually nice despite his scary face, and asks why he helps
people. He tells her that he was born with abnormal strength,
and decided to use it to help others. Ayumu starts explaining
Hayate's kindness to Ikusa, including some of the terrible
things he's been through (all from within the first few chapters
XD), as well as summing up Nagi without using the obvious
       'short' or 'twintails' signifiers. :P
Hayate appears, looking for Ayumu, and Ikusa scolds him for
sending a girl out at night. Hayate gets angry at Ikusa, as it's
his fault that they're having to do all this. Ikusa notes that
the bet was just a joke, and Hayate completely flips, yelling
the Ikusa is just like their parents and should work if he wants
money - Nagi shows up at the moment, yelling some reference, and
declares that Ikusa isn't actually poor.
The restaurant is named Asuki. (well, probably Sakui, but
       translation :P)
       Ikusa, backwards.
Ikusa is the owner. However, when Hayate demands the King's
Jewel, Ikusa says that it is no longer a joke now.

'Ayumu is sweet, Ikusa is actually rich, what happens now?'

454, I can't honestly be bothered to go over the whole thing as
there's so many good jokes. XD Go read. But basically, Ikusa
notes that Hayate is no longer truly ready to risk his life, as
he'd leave people sad at his passing, and then Hina's unwell,
Maria's looking after her, Chiharu and Kayura were at an arcade
all night and have only gone to bed, and Alice has stuff to
attend to... leaving Hayate just Nagi and Ayumu to help run the
       restaurant.

       455. Starts with Nagi and Ayumu giving up on helping Hayate
after an hour. The bulk of it is Fumi and Sharna. As ever with
Fumi, just so much win that you'll have to read it yourself.
Between the chapter and people on AnimeSuki discussing Fumi,
I've ended up with a single tear of laughter. XDXD
       10 Word Summary!
'Hayate is left to manage things alone. Fumi finds love.'
