Chapter 437...
- Hayate dreams of 'Santa' giving him the King's Jewel, and then
Ikusa finding it.
- he informs Nagi and Maria that Ikusa has a Jewel, and that
Kurosu informed him that Ikusa, or someone like him, came to her
with amnesia. She couldn't cure it, and it was only his
co-workers who are bothered. He works at a sea-side restaurant
called Life.
- Hina and Ayumu discuss that Ruka possessed assertiveness, and
that they may not have much longer living with Hayate, so they
need to be assertive.
- Chiharu overhears this, and wonders what's so good about
Hayate, in a 'hmmm... curious' sense and not a disparaging one.
- Regiostar comments on Alice having the battery thing out; she
explains that it shows how much power she has regained, that it
is to do with breaking the curse of the King's Jewel, that (with
images showing what she means) the power of the coffin, sealed
by a certain family, is drawn out by the Shirosakura and that is
the charge for the battery, that this is 'truly Himegami's
land', and that she can't let anyone have the Garden Palace. She
then notes that Regiostar won't understand any of that. :P
- Hayate and Nagi announce a beach trip, with Nagi adding
sinister details to the story of Ikusa, Ayumu over-confidently
planning for the trip, Hina being very concerned over it, and
Chiharu excitedly grabbing Hayate's hand to go buy a swimsuit,
which rekindles Hina and Ayumu's belief that she too likes
Hayate. Chiharu finds Hina's dark and flustered expression
(which is matched by Ayumu's) 'so cute'. :P
- final two panels tease some element connected to Hata's other
work, with the lifeguards and that, and an 'unexpected turn'.

There's no point in me summarising chapter 438. With Hina having
to fly to Sydney on student council business, it's one of those
'see it for yourself' chapters. :P
That and I've got new Index to read. XD

439! Date-checked as August 16th 2005!
A man proposes to a woman on the beach at night. She has a
condition towards the proposal, though.
Cut to the apartment residents at the beach, with Nagi
complaining and stating that it's boring. Kayura warns her that
the sea god will curse her, and has her look down from the pier
to notice tonnes of ('can't show that'-blocked) wharf roaches.
Nagi FREAKS. :P
A little while later, Nagi is recuperating in her hotel room,
while Hinagiku, Ayumu, Chiharu, Kayura and Alice decide to head
out and find the 'Life' restaurant and find Ikusa (Ayumu almost
gets left behind as she's rattling on XD). Nagi tells Hayate
that they are here so that Hayate can be reunited with his
brother first and foremost, not to get her back in the mansion,
and tells him to go on without her as she's struck with the
'wharf roach curse'. :P
The girls trek across the beach, discussing stuff, and Alice
warns them to keep their guard up around Ikusa as he's likely a
'natural hyper gigolo'. XD She adds that his niceness will make
people fall in love with him, which Chiharu and Kayura find
ridiculous while Hina and Ayumu seem rather embarrassed. XD They
reach the restaurant, only to find it in literal ruin. Someone
approaches and remarks that there is no longer anyone there.
Well duh. :P
No chapter next week. D: Colour cover page next chapter. :D

Chapter 440, full of... erm... FAN-SERVICE. :D
Opening colour page of Nagi 'helping' people doing their
entrance exams or graduating, in her own special way. :P Then
colour cover with Hina and Athena, explaining that there's going
to be a special 10th anniversary announcement in mid-March. :o
The mysterious person speaking to the girls is... a random
woman. She explains that the house has disappeared... because
its business was atrocious. :P When asked where they could find
the man with the star-shaped scar, the woman points to an
employment centre, and vanishes before the girls can ask
further. They explain all this, and their failed attempts at
finding anyone who knows Ikusa, to Hayate, Nagi and Maria, Ayumu
suggests bringing out her secret weapon...
A BIKINI! :D
Nagi is unimpressed, but Ayumu explains that if they can't find
Ikusa, they can at least enjoy the beach. Hayate agrees, and we
get a nice page with all of the girls in swimsuits (though
Hina's trying to hide herself with a jacket XD). Nagi treads on
an octopus, and it becomes clear that the beach is notable for
its octopus, though they've been fished into rarity at this
point (Ika Musume, a.k.a Squid Girl, is visible amongst the
crowd in this panel XD). Chiharu asks Hina how she plans on
seducing Hayate, which flusters Hina - she then asks Chiharu the
same thing, still mistakenly believing that she likes him too.
Chiharu realises she can use this to get Hina to confess, by
going to confess to him first, and heads off to do so,
flustering Hina more. :P
Meanwhile, Hayate is on the coast, and picks up a random
octopus. An unknown figure approaches and tells him to hand the
octopus over or he dies.
The narration makes note of how it's basically the same
cliffhanger as last time. :P

Oh god. XDXD
The mysterious figure is EIGHT, of all people, insisting on
taking the octopus so he can marry Shiori. After a bit of a
skirmish, Hayate hands over the octopus, when the mysterious
woman appears, telling Hayate that he has committed a sin and
that he will never get anything from the ocean for it. Hayate
explains this to Nagi shortly after, and Alice proposes that it
is a case of him picking up the octopus and then handing it over
as if it were his possession. She adds that the woman is filled
with kindness, even over a single octopus. Hayate rushes off to
fix his error.
I realised at this point that the woman is cross-dressed Ikusa.
:P
By night, Hayate finds Eight with a man stood by a boatful of
octopuses/octopi. The man claims that the octopus Eight is
holding is not the right one, and offers to take it anyway,
which Eight accepts as he can't tell them apart in the water
anyway. Hayate appears, demanding it back - the man asks if he
is 'one of them', but Eight shrugs him off as an old enemy. He
recites his line about not being able to tell them apart, and
starts to viciously attack Hayate with punches. Hayate believes
he's done for, only for the mysterious woman to block Eight's
punch. He asks Hayate if he's learnt something about sin. Eight
asks the woman who she is, and she claims that she is the one
who fights for the peace of even a single octopus, while
discarding her hat.
And it IS goddamn Ikusa, proclaiming to be a lifesaver while a
shocked and embarrassed Hayate watches on. XDXDXD

442... XDXDXD
Ikusa explains that he cross-dressed to have more success in
tracking Eight down. He intends on stopping him for over-fishing
octopus, but Eight has no intention of stopping. He explains
that he and Shiori made a promise - we start to here her voice
coming from his heart, and she says that if he wants to marry
her, he must give her 600 million yen won in toto (which seems
to be a betting system). XDXD He put a lot of effort into it but
failed every time (Hayate asks what kind of flashback this is
XD)... but the, he came up with a surefire method.
The waters here are where the descendants of PAUL THE OCTOPUS
FROM THE 2010 WORLD CUP live.
XDXDXDXDXD
Well, Eight's rather vague, just saying 'Paul-kun', and Nagi
shows up to explain that he means the results-picking octopus
from 'the German World Cup' (cos you wouldn't want this manga to
notice its anachronisms :P). Eight plans on using one of Paul's
descendants to predict the results, though Hayate and Nagi
observe that Eight himself is a computer and that he probably
shouldn't be relying on an octopus. Ikusa says he can
nevertheless not accept Eight's actions, and Eight fires rockets
on him.
Hayate rushes over but finds Kotetsu lying injured instead. He
wanted to see Hayate in his swimsuit. XD
Ikusa launches a flying kick - and screams 'CERTAIN! DEATH!!' -
on a freaked-out Eight, causing an almighty explosion. However,
Ikusa reveals that as a life-saver, he made sure to keep Eight
alive - his damaged but functioning head. Hayate observes that
he'd yelled 'certain death' and Nagi asks if a heavily-damaged
head counts as 'alive'. XD Shiori then shows up, and tells Eight
that it doesn't matter, as they can't marry anyway as he's not a
citizen. XD They head off together happily, as Shiori notes that
she can construct him a new body with the 600 million yen she
won through toto. XD As Ikusa starts to walk off too, Hayate
stops him, and asks if he really is his brother. Ikusa claims to
have no brother.

'The antics are hilarious, Ikusa is epic, and bloody PAUL?!'
... y'know, I'm sure Paul comes from Weymouth. XD Or at least
somewhere in Dorset.

443 opens with the cast looking at Ikusa. Kayura asks Hayate if
he's going to have a touching reunion, but Hayate notes that the
events of last night made a 'touching' moment a bit impossible.
He also states that he's more interested in if Ikusa has a
King's jewel, and everyone starts discussing how Ikusa doesn't
even have a shirt, let alone a stone around his neck. Ayumu says
she'll go and ask him... and asks if he has a shirt. :P He
answers that he has two. XD She then asks if he's had anything
precious for about ten years, and he unveils Hayate's little
pouch of items that he handed to Ikusa.
Hayate tries to take it, but Ikusa punches him, calling it very
precious to him. He also scolds Hayate for calling him brother,
but Hayate reminds him that he's lost his memories. Ikusa
explains that he can vaguely recall his brother, being a
six-year-old boy and not a high-schooler. XD He claims that if
he keeps hold of the pouch, his brother may return to him some
day. Hayate is infuriated by Ikusa's denseness. XDXD
Souya (note: Ayumu's classmate, main character from Lifesavers)
suggests they hold a competition over the pouch, and vouches for
Hayate as 'much more amazing than me'.
Ikusa: Oh? To me, he only looks like someone who is overall
unlucky, yet is a natural gigolo who subconsciously finds all
the girls' weak points and wins them over.
Hinagiku: He's mostly right.
Ayumu: I think he's exactly right.
He agrees to the competition, however. Nagi asks Hayate if he's
sure, as Ikusa managed to pound Eight, though Ikusa finds their
suggestion of it being a battle 'savage' (Hayate finds this
hypocritical considering the fight with Eight XD). He suggests a
seaside restaurant competition, and suggests Hayate get the Life
restaurant up-and-running again (he says it went out-of-business
after losing a similar competition, which Chiharu notes goes
against his earlier claim of it being terrible business, but
then Ikusa indicates that the battle IS an economic one and
Chiharu re-evaluates his claims again XDXD).
The competition is set - if Hayate successfully restores Life,
he'll get the pouch. If he loses, he gets the debt. :P 8,920,000
yen, to be precise. Nagi offers to cover it, but Hayate claims
that it isn't for her to do - and that running a restaurant is
his specialty. Ikusa hands over a seal and an IOU for the debt,
and has Hayate stamp it to being the competition. It's on!

444! Unlucky for some (namely the Japanese :P).
We continue from the end of last chapter, and Nagi asks Ikusa if
he would hand the treasure over for 8.9 million yen. Ikusa says
that Hayate would have to also say 'I am a pathetic man worth
less than a worn-out slipper who relies on little girls when I
want something'. Nagi immediately claims that Hayate's worth as
much as a new slipper, before immediately correcting herself. XD
Hayate insists that he'll win the competition. He has three
days.
A little bit later, the group (now minus Ikusa, of course) are
stood by the dilapidated Life. Hayate claims that he's not mad,
and that he hadn't imagined that his brother would be a
'good-for-nothing relative' like his parents. First comes the
rebuilding of the restaurant, which Hayate says he can have done
by calling in a 'hidden one' with a secret password.
'Sigh. It's just so hot that I think I'll change into a swimsuit
and go swimming.'
Kotetsu appears. XDXD
Hayate asks him to fix the restaurant for them in two hours, and
makes clear to an uncertain Kotetsu that he's ORDERING him.
Kayura asks Nagi if this is okay - he'll likely win, but then
he'll just leave and never see Ikusa again. She notes that
family members are usually enemies in anime (Gendo is one of the
visual examples XD), but that it does make her sad to see this.
Ayumu suggests that Ikusa would start loving him were he to
regain his memories - Chiharu and Kayura misunderstand and get
all hot under the collar. XD Nagi says they should restore his
memories, and Kayura brings out a club full of nails as a
'surefire strike'. XD Nagi then notes that Kurosu had called
Ikusa uncooperative in regaining his memories, so they just need
him to cooperate.
Chiharu: I see. But what do we need to do?
Nagi: *ponders* Exchange line IDs and...
Chiharu: She has no plan!
Nagi: A-Anyway, we look into what foods he likes, and then...
um... seduce him or something!!
[One of the girls, off-panel]: O-Okay...
Kotetsu is doing well, with Hayate practically slave-driving
them. He asks Maria and Hina for help, an important job that
only they can do...
Cue bunny girl uniforms! :P He notes that they're to attract
customers, and darkly turns down their concerns over their
appearance. He then notices the difference in bust size, and
sends Hina to work at the back. XDXD
Alice observes that he's had a frightening look on his face for
a while, and notes that the two brothers are similar.
Alice: When you have a complaint, you get a frightening look and
make unreasonable demands.
Hayate: !
Alice: But someone who thinks a single meeting can fill a ten
year gap might not understand.
^ And we all know what she really means there. :P
Then she gets out her battery power meter thing, which is pretty
much full.
I'm expecting a return to full Athena at chapter 450. :P

Gonna try to be brief this time...
Hina heads out back, removing the bunny ears and pondering how
ridiculous Hayate's being at the moment. All the while, the
restaurant is completed, and Hayate pays Kotetsu with a ticket
out of town. :P Hayate and Maria discuss how the restaurant
won't get much custom at night, as 'the only beach wildlife is
nocturnal delinquents with fireworks'. They manage to make 200
thousand yen in the first day, but obviously will need to make
much more in the remaining two days. Ayumu suggests they make a
mascot, but Hayate says that Maria is their mascot. :P Alice
suggests they make a delicious curry, as curry and ramen are the
standards of seaside restaurants (and she prefers curry :P).
Nagi suggests they make black curry, which apparently involves
drugs. XD (it's a manga/anime reference, apparently) Alice
explains that she's learnt of a nearby island which has
delicious spices, that would make an incredible curry. Hina
offers to go with them to the island, as she can row a boat (and
handle any nocturnal delinquents with fireworks :P), and Ayumu
says she'll go too, though Alice notes that Hina ('this
strong-armed gorilla') wouldn't be able to row too many people.
:P
The only boat they manage to secure is a swan pedalo (like those
in the Cuties finale). Chiharu tells Hina that this is her
chance to go on the offensive, which Hina takes as 'hitting him
as comeuppance for the bunny-girl costume fiasco earlier'. Ayumu
declares Hina to be lucky for getting to go with Hayate to a
deserted island at night; Chiharu claims that nothing will
happen.
Hayate, Hina and Alice reach the deserted island, and Alice
starts to explain how there used to be a small village, until
one of the villagers went crazy, murdered everyone and killed
himself. She keeps adding to the story, freaking Hina out more
and more, but Hayate takes her hand, telling her not to worry.
And then a pit opens up beneath the two of them mid-sentence. :P

446 was quite simple, so I'll try to be concise. :P
Hayate and Hina find the bottom of the pit to be FULL of skulls.
Hina freaks out a bit, and Hayate says that he'll find a way
out... only to fall into another hole. All the while, Hina
encounters a ghost (which she did expect was a ghost XD), and
Hayate grabs her ankle at the worst possible time. Once he
resurfaces, she grabs him into a hug, saying she was really
scared and noting that she can't walk now. Hayate lifts her onto
his back, noting that she's really light. Hina recalls Ayumu's
words that they both lack assertiveness, and holds Hayate
tightly... by the neck... XD He comments that he never thought
he'd see her that afraid, and she expects him to make some
stupid derisive comment... only for him to say that her scared
face 'was actually very cute'. :3
Hina asks if that means he doesn't usually find her cute, though
he says that he does. She then realises what Chiharu really
meant about going on the offensive. :P And on the surface, the
murderer (off-panel) approaches a calm Alice.
