Re: Hayate no Gotoku chapter reviews
By: Ashes Date: August 18, 2013, 12:12 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       418.
Well, basically, Ruka performs and ponders how she only became
an idol per her parents' agenda and they then left her with the
debt. She notes how she promised herself not to cry again. We
flashback to earlier, and Atsumari tells Ruka that, after her
ninth song, she's to either raise the microphone and announce
the Vegas concert, at which point an ad for it will play; or
lower her microphone and announce that she is quitting as an
idol. As the ninth song nears its end, Ruka is determined that
she shall quit, but starts to cry. As she questions why there
are any tears at all, the audience cheer her on, which obviously
shows her why she's still - and should continue to be - an idol:
       the fans.
See, now, the problem with this chapter is that it feels like
there's no free will here. We know, from CTMEOY, that Ruka
performs the Vegas gig. We know that Nagi is in the mansion, we
know Nagi has a printed doujinshi, we know a whole lot of things
that negate any suspense or intrigue when it comes to the
current events. And it feels, from an external point-of-view,
that Ruka never had a choice at all. Her pondering and deciding
to quit being an idol feels wasted when you know it'll change
anyway. It made me feel uncomfortable reading the chapter,
       really.
However, point of intrigue still there - Kurosu was suddenly
stood behind Hayate, watching from backstage, in one panel. Why
was she suddenly there? Now, if there's any deeper mystery to
her, it obviously doesn't play into CTMEOY, which may mean it's
solved by then... but since I doubt all the current questions
will be answered in the next lot of story, there's no saying it
       will for sure. :P

419, or 'How Kenjiro Hata managed to take the CTMEOY determinism
and make a good thing out of it'.
Atsumari has the Vegas video played, as Ruka admits that she got
emotional from seeing her fans again and announces the Vegas
concert. As she heads off stage, emotionally drained, Atsumari
       thanks her, to no response.
Later, in the apartments' garden, Hayate points out that Ruka
must love singing, and that he was nervous for a moment that she
would quit. Ruka exclaims that she DID want to quit. She cried
because, even though she wanted to quit, she knew that she
COULDN'T, because of her parents' debt that still needs paying
off. She's trapped. Hayate tells her of Kurosu visiting - in
flashback, Kurosu says 'I am actually...' before her
conversation with Hayate is kinda whispered-out. (I got very
excited XD) Kurosu tells Hayate that he can make Ruka happy, and
in the present, Hayate promises to do so as Nagi watches (ala
413). The next morning, Hayate asks Nagi if he can be excused
for his butler duties for a little bit to help Ruka.
So, who is Kurosu to Ruka? Too young to be her mother, really. I
like the idea that she's her elder sister, akin to Ikusa for
Hayate (it even works with the debt-ridden blue-haired teens
have an older, same-sex sibling with black hair who help people
wherever they go). Someone else proposed that Ruka's parents
fell ill and Kurosu was their doctor, hearing Mrs Suirenji's
dying wish. Whatever it is, it's gonna be good. :D

       ---------------------------------------------------------
420, and we're wading back into 'why bother when CTMEOY exists?'
       territory. :P
Hayate is with Kurosu, who explains how Lamborghinis have the
trunk in the front. Hina explains that she's coming along, and
Hayate is grateful, but confused as to how all three of them can
get in the two-seat car. Kurosu again points out the trunk. :P
Meanwhile, Nagi ponders what Hayate's intentions are (she
envisions Hayate remarking that he's gonna make Ruka happy by
marrying her, and saying that they've already kissed... not far
off the mark, Nagi XD), and insists that she must finish her
doujinshi and win the competition. Atsumari hands Ruka the plan
for the Vegas concert, but Ruka says she has business to attend
       to first.
As Nagi and Chiharu continue on with Nagi's doujinshi, Nagi
starts to get a backache from her walking in the previous
chapters. The lights short out, and Nagi instinctively calls out
for Hayate. Nothing happens, naturally, and Chiharu goes to
check the breaker. Nagi steps out onto the veranda, pondering
Hayate again, and sees Ruka stood there. Ruka explains that she
and Hayate share the same pain, and that she will win the
competition and set Hayate free of being Nagi's butler.
... which we know TOTALLY happens. *rolleyes*

421! And we continue on from Ruka's announcement from last
chapter, only for her to reach home and realise that she's not
made any progress on her manga in a while. Her emotional state
prevents her from drawing - for a whole 6 hours - and she's
visited by Comic Master K (Kayura. I laughed XD). After noting
that it's a parody of a character called Comic Master J, Kayura
explains that she's here to help, and that her parents wanted
her to be a mangaka (which she's epic at - better than Nagi and
Ruka, in fact, apparently). However, she isn't sure if she wants
to be a mangaka when she's older - right now, she just enjoys
reading manga. Ruka shows her the manuscript... a woman from a
millennium ago (a famous writer, I believe) is resurrected in a
young body in the present, and finds her book still selling well
but the anachronisms... did something. (would help if I knew who
she was :P ) She starts writing a new book using modern
techniques, but becomes enamoured with modern life, including
love, all the while. Self-insertion character, basically. :P
Kayura takes this opportunity to start telling Ruka a story
about an idol who visited a neighbourhood supermarket. That's
all she says, though, before the chapter ends. :P

       422. Kayura's parents discuss her heading off again, and her dad
looks into her room. All the while, Kayura explains to Ruka how
the idol performed a concert for the supermarket's revamping,
which was pretty pathetic. Wooden stage, backing music on a
cassette player, an audience of just a few old people. Kayura
(kid!Kayura X3) was not impressed, but the idol (represented via
Ruka with blacked-out face, btw) put her all into it, shook the
hands of and thanked the audience members, and handed out signed
posters happily... thought Kayura noted that she actually had
       bitterness mixed into her smile.
Kayura exclaims that Ruka should not tell lies, as she's no good
at it. We see a poster in Kayura's room, of Ruka, signed.
Ruka settles down to start working. After sunrise, Kayura visits
the apartments, explaining to Chiharu that she'll be helping
Ruka at the Rainbow Village (the real one or the little cottage?
:P) until the competition. She wishes Nagi luck and leaves.
Maria tends to a feverish (and adorable) Ayumu, and it seems
that Nagi is coming down with it too. Chiharu tells her that
Ruka is apparently making strong progress now, and Nagi worries
       over Hayate's fate.
And where is Hayate? He finally gets out of the trunk of
Kurosu's car, as he, Hina and Kurosu have arrived at Hokkaido.

We start 423 with Maria cooking at night for Nagi, explaining to
Alice that Nagi often puts lots of effort into things, but they
pretty much always fail in the end... and she's always there to
       comfort her.
The bulk of the chapter is Nagi's internal monologue as she
continues to draw - with the pages coming slow and steady, the
deadline (not just for internal art, but covers, editing and
publishing) a week away and her cold making her feel bad, she
starts to wonder how much Hayate actually cares for her (amongst
the flashbacks/memories is a repeated panel of Hayate saying
'whether in the past of future, I will protect you', which
eventually actually gets a little awkward from having to repeat
it so much. XD Nagi decides that Hayate is not rooting for her
as that way, he can lose his debt and marry a beautiful girl.
She even notes how Hayate has not been answering her calls, and
that he isn't helping her when she needs him. Frustrated, and
wondering what the point is in drawing anymore, she slams the
table, knocking the ink onto her finished pages. Chiharu and
Maria rush to clean them, but Nagi tells them not to bother as
       she's done.
Obviously, there's more in her monologue, but I'm doing it from
memory. It's an awesome chapter, go read. :P

424! 9th anniversary! Colour pages! (that's the epic 'cover'
       page)
  HTML http://i7.mangareader.net/hayate-the-combat-butler/424/hayate-the-combat-butler-4502565.jpg
We start with a recap (in colour) of the end of the previous
chapter, and Nagi then elaborates that with the time limit
growing ever-tighter (and already being difficult even before
the spillage) and most of the pages ruined, there's no point in
continuing. Maria goes to comfort Nagi, but Chiharu stops her,
and starts to reel off some seemingly hopeless battles from
anime. The protagonist, she explains, never gives up, and if
Nagi is the protagonist as she claims, then she can't give up
either. She chose to start this competition, so it's on her
       shoulders to win.
All the while, Nagi flashes back to that fateful night where she
stood by the vending machines in the park, and ponders that she
has always felt that her wealth has defined her, and she could
potentially be anyone and still be defined by it. Pulling
herself up, she decides that she wants to do this not because of
the competition, or for Hayate, but for herself - to prove
herself and choose her path. She says she's going to start over,
completely. Chiharu and Maria are shocked, but Nagi says that
she doesn't need that 'manuscript of scribbles'. Chiharu goes to
help her, while a shocked Maria ponders the fact that she didn't
get to - or need to - comfort her. Alice points out that her
mother role seems to no longer be needed.
Aaaaand here comes the fateful day!

       Ayumu cover. X3
Nagi finishes the base pages, but Chiharu asks if she can finish
them off in 2 days. Nagi's response is that you don't ask if it
can be done, you just do it. Chiharu is bowled over by Nagi's
determination, and Ayumu appears, offering help - specifically,
to help them draw more efficiently (since, as Nagi points out,
Ayumu can't draw). She presents a computer, monitor and a
scanner or printer (or a 2-in-1?), which she got from 'someone
who wasn't using it'. Nagi and Chiharu figure that means
Ashibashi. :P Ayumu adds that they have someone who can add
backgrounds online... cut to an annoyed-looking Koutarou. XD
Chiharu notes that she's not familiar with the technology, but
Kayura appears saying to leave it to her. She explains that Ruka
has finished her base pages and wants to do the rest herself,
asking Kayura to help Nagi instead.
Chiharu points out that, if they can get another computer, she
can follow Kayura's lead. At that point, a delivery arrives - a
computer and LCD tablet. It's from 'the Sadistic Princess of
Ise' - the implication is that it's Alice. Nagi leads the group
on, and they manage to finish - Nagi confronts the pile of
doujinshi, and declares that it's time to go.

426! Chiharu and Kayura discuss the imminent competition, with a
flashback to Isumi giving Kayura a bell for Ruka to wear with a
perception filter-type effect... as well as a mask, to hide her
face. :P Nagi and Ruka cross paths, and clarify the rules. They
settle down - Ayumu asks about Hayate and Hinagiku, and Chiharu
notes that traffic is bad due to a fireworks display later.
Kayura states to Chiharu upon questioning that she finds both
manga to be poorly-done and hard to read, but overall still
good. Ruka immediately sells a copy, and Nagi assures herself
that things are only just starting. Nagi's rival from that one
time appears, and buys a copy; his apprentice is curious, and he
has her buy a copy herself. As things go on, Nagi simply forgets
the competition and enjoys selling her work, until she finally
       sells out.

Chapter 427, or 'A Sea of Red Herrings'. :P
Nagi asks how Ruka's doujinshi has sold, and sees that it, too,
has sold out - apparently, earlier than her. It hits Nagi that
she's lost both the competition and Hayate. Chiharu goes to
discuss it with Ruka for Nagi's sake, but Nagi holds her back,
and congratulates Ruka on winning. She says how Ruka inspired
her to exceed herself and so on, and tells her to take care of
Hayate. As she goes to leave, Ruka tells her that the rules
never said that the person who sold out FIRST won. Nagi says
that it can't all end in a draw, but Ruka reveals that she held
a copy back (or otherwise didn't sell it, it's not made that
clear :P) and likewise returns some of Nagi's thanks. However,
someone (assumedly Hayate) appears and asks to buy Ruka's final
