FC Porto B - Champions Season 1

FC Porto B were crowned champions after there dominate win over
Eintracht II on Wednesday evening, Going into the game knowing a
win would seal the title, the young dragons showed why they have
been the best team in the league by some distance by ripping
apart the German side.
With 3 games still remaining, we will be approaching these games
as we have every game this season and giving the whole squad a
chance to further impress and come the end of the season, there
will be a comprehensive review of our title winning season.

FC Porto Manager GaryG - Post Match Press Conference
Opening Statement
"First of all, I want to thank our supporters. At 4-1 down
against the league leaders, many teams would have collapsed, but
this group showed heart, personality and pride in the shirt. To
come back and draw 4-4 against Manchester United says a lot
about the character in this dressing room. It's a strange
feeling because I'm proud of the comeback, yet frustrated at the
same time. We created enough chances to win the match, but we
also made too many mistakes defensively, especially during that
spell in the first half where the game got away from us."
On the dramatic comeback from 4-1 down
"We never stopped believing. At half-time the message was
simple: score the next goal and make them feel pressure.
Rodrigo's goal straight after the break was huge. It changed the
atmosphere completely. Once it became 4-2, you could see United
becoming a little cautious. We started winning second balls,
moving the ball quicker and attacking with more conviction. The
substitutions helped bring fresh energy and the players pushed
until the very end. The equaliser from Joel was fully deserved."
On Rodrigo Mora's performance
"Rodrigo was outstanding. For me, he controlled the tempo of our
attacks all night. He had a goal, two assists and was involved
in almost everything positive we did. What impressed me most
wasn't the statistics. It was his courage. Even when we were
losing heavily, he kept asking for the ball and looking to make
things happen. That's the mentality top players have."
On William Gomez
"William was excellent as well. His movement caused them
problems throughout the match. He scored, he created
opportunities and worked tirelessly for the team. He could
easily have had two or three goals today. The important thing is
that he kept making the runs and never hid."
On Yaan Karamoh's impact from the bench
"That's exactly why you have a squad. Yaan changed the game when
he came on. He brought pace, directness and confidence. His goal
gave us belief and his overall contribution was fantastic. He
hasn't featured as much as he would have liked this season, but
he's a great lad and trains well, and as I always have said to
the players, be ready as when your chance comes you have to take
it."
On conceding four goals
"We have to be honest. You cannot concede four goals at home and
expect to win many football matches. Bryan Mbeumo was
exceptional and we struggled to contain him during certain
periods. Some of the goals we conceded were avoidable. We lost
concentration, our distances weren't good enough and we allowed
transitions that we had worked on this week. The players know we
need to improve defensively."
On the tactical change after going 3-1 behind
"I felt we needed more aggression and more numbers higher up the
pitch. At that moment there was no point protecting a defeat.
The change gave us better attacking positions and allowed our
creative players to receive the ball where they could hurt
United. It carried risks, of course, but when you're chasing a
game against a team of that quality, you have to be brave."
On the half-time team talk
"I think tonight is the first time this season where I have
really let laid into the players over a performance. They were
simply not good enough after we scored. To concede four goals
at home, inside 13 minutes is unacceptable. We spoke some home
truths, and I got the reaction I was looking for in the second
half. "
On the message to the supporters
"I understand their frustration about the season. Nobody at this
club accepts being relegated. But I hope tonight they saw a team
that refused to surrender. The crowd stayed with us even at 4-1
down and the players responded. That connection between
supporters and team is what helped drive the comeback. We owe
them much more, but tonight we gave them something to believe
in."
Final Remarks
"Against the potential champions, we had 20 attempts, 12 shots
on target, scored four goals and came back from three goals
down. That's the positive. The negative is obvious: we put
ourselves in that position in the first place. We'll take the
fighting spirit, learn from the mistakes and keep building. FC
Porto's future must be defined by the character we showed in the
final 45 minutes, not by the mistakes we made in the first 30."

Opening Statement
"First of all, I'd like to congratulate the players. Tonight was
everything I've been asking from this group. Discipline,
courage, commitment, intelligence, and above all, pride. We came
to one of the toughest grounds in the division against a very
good Tottenham side and produced a performance that showed
exactly what FC Porto can be capable of when everything comes
together. The disappointing thing, of course, is that this
result comes in our final match after relegation has already
been confirmed. It doesn't change our league position. It
doesn't change the pain of the season. But it does show the
character that still exists within this football club. I thought
we were outstanding. We defended bravely, took our chances when
they came, and every player worked for the badge. To leave this
division with a clean sheet and a 3-0 victory against Tottenham
is something the players should be proud of."
On the Match
"We started very well. I thought our midfield was excellent from
the opening whistle. Victor Froholdt, Alan Varela and Assane
Ouedraogo were finding spaces and moving the ball quickly. The
first goal was a reward for that. Samu Aghehowa took his finish
brilliantly and gave us the belief that we could really hurt
them. The second goal shortly before half-time was massive.
There can sometimes be uncertainty when VAR is involved, but
Borja Sainz fully deserved his goal. Going in 2-0 up completely
changed the complexion of the game. In the second half we knew
Tottenham would come at us. They have too much quality not to.
But our defensive organisation was probably the best it has been
all season. Diogo Costa was exceptional, the centre-backs were
outstanding, and Alberta Costa gave one of the finest individual
performances I've seen this season."
On Alberto Costa's Man of the Match Performance
"Alberto was absolutely magnificent. He defended aggressively,
won his duels, made key interventions and then capped it all
with a fantastic goal. That's the kind of performance supporters
remember. These are the nights where players announce themselves
as leaders. When we analyse this season there will be
frustrations, but Alberto has shown tremendous development and
tonight was a perfect example of the player I believe he can
become."
On Diogo Costa
"I thought Diogo was world-class tonight. People will look at
the scoreline and see 3-0, but there were moments where
Tottenham could have changed the game. The save from Xavi
Simons, the stops from Kudus, his command of the penalty area,
his decision-making. He was absolutely crucial. The clean sheet
belongs to the entire team, but when your goalkeeper performs at
that level it gives everyone confidence."
On the Decision to Switch Styles After Going Two Goals Ahead
"We knew Tottenham would become more aggressive once they fell
behind. At 2-0 we made the decision to become more compact and
protect central areas. Some people might call it defensive, but
I call it game management. We weren't interested in making the
match open and giving Tottenham momentum. The players executed
the plan perfectly. They stayed compact, remained patient, and
waited for opportunities to counter. That's exactly how the
third goal arrived."
On the Season and Relegation
"Now we have to face reality. This result was fantastic, but it
doesn't erase what has happened over the course of the season.
Relegation is unacceptable for a club of FC Porto's stature.
Nobody is hiding from that. Not me, not the players, not the
staff. There have been moments this season where we simply were
not good enough. There have been games where we didn't take
chances, games where we made costly mistakes, and periods where
consistency completely disappeared. The table never lies over
the course of an entire campaign. That said, I don't think this
squad is as bad as relegation suggests. That's not an excuse.
It's simply my assessment. Too often we've shown tonight's level
for 30 minutes, 45 minutes, maybe one game, and then failed to
sustain it over weeks and months."
On what Hurt Porto Most This Season?
"I would say consistency. We've had games where we played like a
top-half side and games where we looked like a relegation side.
You cannot survive in a division of this quality when your
levels fluctuate that much. We've also lacked ruthlessness in
key moments. There were matches earlier in the campaign where we
performed well but didn't get the result. Those points add up
over a long season. By the time we found our rhythm, the damage
had already been done."
Message to the Supporters
"The supporters deserve an apology. They have travelled,
supported us and continued believing even during difficult
moments. Relegation hurts them more than anyone. What I can
promise is that nobody inside this club is accepting relegation
as normal. This club belongs at the highest level. The
responsibility now is to ensure this is a temporary setback, not
a long-term decline. Tonight's victory is for them. They
deserved something to celebrate after a difficult year."
Looking Ahead to the Future
"The future starts tomorrow. There will be reviews. There will
be conversations. There will be difficult decisions. That's
football. But I see reasons for optimism. We've got talented
young players. We've got experienced leaders. We've got a strong
identity as a club. What we need now is stability, clarity and a
relentless determination to return to this division at the first
opportunity. That must be the objective. Not eventually. Not
someday. Immediately. The expectation at FC Porto is to compete,
to win and to be among the best. That expectation doesn't
disappear because we've been relegated."
On Summer Transfers and Squad Changes
"It's too early to discuss individuals publicly. Some players
will naturally attract interest after strong seasons and
performances. That's normal. Others may decide their futures lie
elsewhere. That's football as well. What I can say is that every
decision we make will be based on one objective: building a
squad capable of earning promotion and creating a stronger
foundation for the future. We won't panic. We won't rebuild
recklessly. We will make smart decisions."
Final Message
"Tonight's result gives us belief, but it also leaves us with a
sense of what might have been. To come here and beat Tottenham
3-0 shows the quality that exists within this group.
Unfortunately, football seasons aren't defined by one night.
They're defined by 22 games, and over those 22 games we fell
short. Now the chapter closes. We accept the disappointment. We
learn from it. We take responsibility for it. And then we begin
the work of bringing FC Porto back to where it belongs."

Pre-Match Press Conference
Firstly, welcome back. A new season begins, Gary. How are you
feeling after last season's disappointment of relegation to
Division One?
Thanks, it's good to be back. The start of a new season is
always exciting for the players, staff and fans, and this season
is no different. We were hugely disappointed in ourselves last
season, but we've drawn a line under that now and are only
looking forward. I'm raring to go, and so are my players. We're
all looking forward to Saturday's game against Boca Juniors.
What are you looking forward to most in the coming season?
Working with the players, for sure. I've said it before, but we
have a fantastic group here. They're young, hungry and eager to
improve. I can't wait to see what they can do this season.
It's been a very quiet summer in terms of transfers. In fact, no
players have come in or left the club. Why is that?
I've never been one for making transfers just for the sake of
making transfers. If there was a trophy for the number of
signings you make, I'd probably finish last every season
(laughs). I've already got a great squad that's young and will
only get better. If the right player becomes available then, of
course, we'll act. But I'm very happy with the players we
already have here.
Despite no signings, a number of players have been promoted from
the B team that won the Under-21 title last season. How do you
see them fitting in?
Our B team were fantastic last season and showed that the future
is very bright here at the club. We've welcomed them into the
group and they've fitted in straight away. They don't look out
of place at all, which is a real credit to them.
Brazilian midfielder Kaue was the standout performer for the B
team last season. Do you see him making an impact in the first
team?
For sure, yes. Kaue has great qualities that will only
complement the squad we already have. He's excellent
technically, very comfortable on the ball and physically strong
as well. That was clear to see in his performances last season.
He seemed to run games every time he played, and if he continues
that progression, he'll have a big part to play for us.
Do you feel there is added pressure this season to win promotion
at the first attempt?
Of course, but there's always pressure when you're managing FC
Porto. The objective this season is very clear: win promotion
and put us back among the elite, where we feel we belong. That's
what we're focused on every day.
You'll come up against Sporting Lisbon this season in one of
Portuguese football's biggest rivalries. Are you looking forward
to those games, and what did you make of their manager's
decision to leave after only a week in charge?
I was very surprised to see Mikey walk away after only a week to
join Spurs. I saw his comments at his unveiling last week, where
he said they were the best team in Portugal. Maybe he realised
that wasn't the case and decided to leave! (laughs) But
seriously, no matter who's in charge of Sporting, those are
always special games. It's a fantastic rivalry, one that the
players and fans look forward to, and we're no different.

Opening Statement
“Tonight was a performance that reflects exactly what we’ve been
demanding from the players: intensity, bravery, and complete
control of the game. From the first whistle we imposed our
structure, our tempo, and our identity. Borja Sainz was
relentless, Varela dictated everything, and Ouedraogo showed why
he’s such a key part of our vertical threat. It’s a strong
start, but it’s only the beginning.”
On what pleased you most about the performance
“The aggression in our transitions. Every time we won the ball,
we broke lines immediately. The first goal is a perfect example:
Varela sees the picture early, hits a long ball, and Ouedraogo
finishes with real authority. That’s exactly the type of
football we want to play — fast, purposeful, and fearless.”
On Borja Sainz causing chaos down Monaco’s right side
“Absolutely. Borja was unplayable at times. He hit the woodwork,
he missed a big chance, but he kept going and got his goal with
a brave diving header. His ability to isolate defenders and
attack space is crucial for us. He’s a player who can change
games on his own, and tonight he did.”
On the red card for Haroldsson that changed the game
“It was coming. Borja had already been fouled three or four
times in quick succession. Haroldsson was on a yellow, he dives
into another reckless challenge, and the referee has no choice.
But even before the red card, we were the better side. The
dismissal just gave us more control.”
On switching to a more controlled style after going 2-0 ahead
“Yes. At 2–0 with a man advantage, you don’t need chaos — you
need maturity. We changed to a more controlled shape, kept the
ball, and forced Monaco to chase. It’s important that this team
learns how to manage games, not just dominate them. Tonight we
did both.”
On how important is Ouedraogo to our system
“He’s vital. His second goal — sprinting past Trippier and
finishing cleanly — shows his athleticism and composure. He
gives us verticality, he presses aggressively, and he’s
improving every week. He’s a player who fits the Dragăo
mentality perfectly.”
On Monaco pulling one back through VAR and any concerns about
the defensive phase
“No. These things happen. Balogun is a top striker, and even
then, Diogo Costa almost kept it out. What matters is how we
responded. Calm, organised, no panic. We didn’t allow Monaco to
build momentum. That’s growth.”
On Alan Varela’s performance
“Outstanding. He controlled everything — tempo, transitions,
defensive balance. His passing range was on full display,
especially the ball for the first goal. When Varela plays like
this, we look like a top team.”
On what does this result mean for the season
“It means we’ve set a standard. Last season wasn’t good enough
for FC Porto — everyone knows that. This year, the expectation
is clear: we want to get out of this division, and we want to do
it playing football that reflects the identity of this club.
Tonight was a strong step, but it’s only one game, and there is
a long season ahead.”
On our ambitions for the campaign
“Promotion. Nothing less. We have the squad, we have depth, and
we have competition for places. But ambition alone doesn’t win
anything — mentality does. If we keep this intensity and
discipline, we’ll be exactly where we want to be at the end of
the season.”
A message for the fans after this opening win
“Thank you. The Dragăo felt alive tonight. The players feed off
that energy. We want to make this stadium a place where teams
suffer again. Tonight was a reminder of what FC Porto looks like
when we play with courage.”
Closing Statement
“We enjoy the win tonight. Tomorrow, we prepare for the next
challenge. This is a long season, and we intend to be at the top
of it.”
