Roma FC: A Tough Task Ahead
Roma have inherited a squad that is stronger than the
financial situation suggests, but it is badly unbalanced. The
good news is that the spine is there. The bad news is that there
isn't much money to fix the obvious weaknesses.
Goalkeeper — sorted
Mila Svilar (13) is comfortably the number one. At 27, he is in
his prime and his St 13 / Ag 22 makes him one of the more
reliable assets in the squad.
Gollini is useful experienced cover, while 20-year-old Zelezny
can develop.
No need to spend money here.
Defence — the biggest strength
This is where Roma can build.
Ndicka — 14
Wesley — 14
Ghilardi — 12
Ziolkowski — 12
That's a very respectable defensive core.
Then you've got Angelino, Rensch, Mancini, Celik and Hermoso,
giving you plenty of options and experience.
The interesting one is Ndicka. He's only 27, has St 14 and Ag
36, and should be the defensive leader.
I'd make him the cornerstone of the back four.
Strong enough to compete. Don't waste scarce money here.
Midfield — decent, but lacking a superstar
This is probably the area where Roma need the most tactical
cleverness rather than transfer spending.
N_Pisilli – Ps 14
El Aynaoui – Ps 13
Ayari – Ps 13
Regeer – Ps 13
That's a decent technical base.
The squad has plenty of midfielders, but the issue is that
several are similar types. You don't necessarily need more
midfielders — you need to get the existing ones working
together.
Quantity good, quality respectable, balance questionable.
Attack — dangerous but expensive-looking
Ferguson – Sh 14
Malen – Sh 13
Sahraoui – Sh 13
Rutter – Sh 13
That's a lot of attacking options.
I'd be very tempted to build around Ferguson and Rutter/Malen,
rather than trying to squeeze every forward into the team.
The problem is that as the finances are poor, one of these
attackers could potentially become the source of a sizeable
transfer fee — but selling your best goalscorer before
establishing the team could also make the rebuild much harder.
