Welcome to S.L. BENFICA.
In recent weeks Portuguese giants Sport Lisboa e Benfica or
simply Benfica appointed former Atletico Madrid manager "STEVIE"
as their new boss to make plans and lead the club forwards and
to the top of European football. The new boss has come in and
set about his own plans for a new look team with his focus
seeming to be a blend of native portuguese players and mexican
players well known for their flair and creativity.
The club are currently in transition and after being the most
successful club in Portugal with 88 trophies from 38 Primeira
League titles, 26 Taca de Portugal, 8 Taca de Liga, 10 Supertaça
Cândido de Oliveira and 3 Campeonato de Portugal.
In Europe they won the European Cup twice, 5 times runners up,
and 3 times runners up in the Europa League...
The boss has already been reshaping his formation, tactics and
playing squad, has brought in players Raul Rangel, J Vazquez,
Erik Lira, B_Gutierriez, Giberto Mora, Joao Felix, F Conceicao.
Joao Felix has settled well as the lead striker with 3 goals in
3 games, Conceicao is fast and pacey on the wing with good
passing skills. At least 7 players are still expected to leave
the club as reinforcements are brought into to the manager's
request for his formation and tactics.
The Benfica 'B' Academy are also training hard and building with
12 players currently making the team and the club are expected
to make an application to join the U21s Development League next
season. Anisio_Cabral is one of the rising stars in attack and
many see him close to making the 1st team, G_Moreira is the star
of the Academy and the 20 year old midfielder has much potential
and again close to being called to the 1st team.
Off the field, the Estadio da Luz will be expanded but at this
time money has gone into expanding the training ground, and fans
engagement area which will bring in revenue.
Thee boss has had backroom staff added with Tomaso Barasco
appointed Director of Football, Ricardo Rocha staying on as
Assistant Manager and Bruno Mendes coming in as Fitness Coach
for the teams.
Benfica has rivalries with Sporting CP and FC Porto, with whom
it forms the "Big Three", Portugal's most decorated clubs. As
Lisbon-based clubs, Benfica and Sporting have shared a rivalry
for over a century; it all started in 1907, when eight prominent
Benfica players defected to Sporting. It is the most important
football derby in Portugal and is followed in Europe, Africa,
the Americas, and wherever the Portuguese diaspora is.
The rivalry between Benfica and FC Porto, which started with a
friendly match on 28 April 1912, comes about as Lisbon and Porto
are the largest Portuguese cities, respectively. Benfica and
Porto are the two most decorated clubs in Portuguese football,
with Benfica currently being the most decorated team overall.Any
match between the two sides is called O Clássico (The Classic).
