MEANING OF FORUM KEY TERMS

GENERAL
OVERVIEW OF THE FORUM
The forum is an online christian discussion site
where christ believers and followers around the world can hold
conversations in the form of posted messages. They differ from
chat rooms in that messages which are at least temporarily
archived. Also, based on the access level of a user or the forum
set-up, a posted message might need to be approved by a
moderator before it becomes visible.
The forum consists of a tree like directory
structure. The top end is "Categories". The forum is divided
into categories for the relevant discussions. Under the
categories are sub-forums and these sub-forums can further have
more sub-forums.
USER GROUPS
An unregistered user of the site is commonly known as a guest or
visitor. The guest can only read any
posted topic and share it on facebook but cannot comment nor
create a topic for discussion on the
forum. However, for registered members of the forum, they can
create topics for discussion, as inspired by
the Holy Spirit, upload their avatar and be able to edit their
personal profile.
MODERATORS
The moderators are users of the forum who are granted access to
the post and threads of all members for the purpose of
moderating discussion (similar to arbitration) and also keeping
the forum clean (neutralizing spam and spambots etc.) Because
they have access to all posts and threads in their area of
responsibility, it is common for a friend of the site owner to
be promoted to moderator for such a task. Moderators also answer
users' concerns about the forum, general questions, as well as
respond to specific complaints. They also can do anything to
lend a helping hand to a user in need Moderators themselves may
have ranks: some may be given mod privileges over only a
particular topic or section (called "local"), while others
(called "global" or "super") may be allowed access anywhere.
Common privileges of moderators include: deleting, merging,
moving, and splitting of posts and threads, locking, renaming,
stickying of threads, banning, suspending, unsuspending,
unbanning, warning the members, or adding, editing, removing the
polls of threads. Moderators also have categories e.g. "Global
Moderators" and just "Moderators". Global moderators have the
rights to moderate the complete forum while moderators can be
assigned only to the sub-forum
Administrator
The administrators (short form: "admin") manage the technical
details required for running the site. As such, they may promote
(and demote) members to/from moderators, manage the rules,
create sections and sub-sections, as well as perform any
database operations (database backup etc.). Administrators often
also act as moderators. Administrators may also make forum-wide
announcements, or change the appearance (known as the skin) of a
forum.
Post
A post is a user-submitted message enclosed into a block
containing the user's details and the date and time it was
submitted. Members are usually allowed to edit or delete their
own posts. Posts are contained in threads, where they appear as
boxes one after another. The first post starts the thread; this
may be called the TS (thread starter) or OP (original post).
THREAD
A thread (sometimes called a topic) is a collection of posts,
usually displayed from oldest to latest,
although this is typically configurable
Private message
A private message, or PM for short, is a message sent in private
from a member to one or more other members.
Attachment
An attachment can be almost any file. When someone attaches a
file to a person's post they are
uploading the file to the forum's server. The forum usually has
very strict limit on what can be attached
and what cannot (among which the size of the files in question).
Commonalities
between Global moderators and moderators
Both global moderators and moderators are responsible for
ensuring that forum members follow the rules
set out by the admin. Forum rules differ widely. Here, we
require that members use their nick names or
real names as their usernames but without any space in between
them , we also
prohibit profanity and do not allow long-time members to "flame"
or mock new members. While
global moderators and moderators have the power to edit and
remove posts, they don't simply sign into
the forum to police it. Both types of moderators are active
forum members themselves. They post on
various topic threads and read many or most of the posts to stay
informed. They encourage members to
expand on topics, help keep a topic thread from splintering into
non-topic related conversation and keep
the forum active
Global Moderators
The biggest difference between global moderators and moderators
is that global moderators
have influence and permissions globally, over all threads of
conversation on the forum,
whereas a moderator may have the ability to edit only specific
threads. The best global
moderators are not only more knowledgeable on the central topic
than other forum
members, but they also know where everything is located on the
forum. If, for example, at a
painting forum, a member posts about how to mix a particular
color in a topic thread
devoted to brush techniques, the global moderator would not only
know the post was in the
wrong thread, but would also know where it appropriately
belongs. The global moderator
could then move the post and contact the member. In addition to
these responsibilities, the
global moderator keeps the forum clean of spam and spambots, and
addresses members'
concerns and complaints. He also has the authority to ban
members on a temporary or
permanent basis. Additionally, the global moderator may perform
some administrative
duties such as outreach to new members and working as a liaison
between the moderators
and the administrator
Moderators
Moderators primarily enforce the forum's rules and policies.
Compared to global
moderators, they have more restrictions on what they are able to
do across the forum. Some
forums, for example, do not allow moderators to ban members or
move entire topic threads
to new sections. However, they are often responsible for keeping
the conversation flowing in
a polite and helpful way. In large forums, a moderator's job can
be stressful and time-
consuming, as members may show little concern for others'
feelings and a moderator must
be quick to step in and diffuse a situation before it becomes
too heated. To do this,
moderators may lock down a discussion, preventing further
posting, or hide threads which
they feel are either outdated or not worthy of further
discussion. Most forum moderators are
active forum members.
