The Greatest Band In Country Music- In Your Opinion?
By: Woody Skym Date: October 30, 2009, 1:45 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I have heard alot of different opininions about who had the
"Greatest Band" in Country Music. In a recent poll on CMT I
believe Emmylou Harris's band "The Nash Ramblers" was voted #1.
I think CMT is Bias on alot of their polls just my opinion. I
love Emmylou Harris she is my favorite lady singer of all time,
but her band was not and is not the best in Country Music.
As a boy I grew up with alot of Marty Robbins and Buck Owens, my
dad was and is a huge Marty Robbins fan, He once told me that he
went too see Marty at the Grand Ole Opry when he was on leave
from the Navy and said Marty did 7 encores and noone else got a
chance too play that night at the Opry, my dad said Marty
Robbins was tthe Greatest Entertainer of all.
My mother on the other hand was a huge fan of Buck Owens and The
Buckaroos, she still is , she has every album Buck Owens ever
recorded, every cassette and 8 track tape, I just bought her
Buck's box set for her birthday last April. My mom has alot of
Autographed photos and memorabilia of Buck as well. I remember
hearing the awesome Guitar licks Don Rich would play as the Lead
Guitarist of the Buckaroos growing up and the awesome band
behind him. The Buckaroos just had a sound that was beyond
compair too any band. I remember watching the Buckaroos perform
on Hee Haw with Buck, each band member had a style of their own.
In my personal opinion even though I love the Strangers, Buck
Owens had the Greatest Band in Country Music of all time without
a doubt. The Buckaroos are #1 in my book and should be in any
Country Music fan's book.

Woody, I have to agree with you. I am also a fan of Buck and
the Buckaroos, especially Don Rich. That man was awesome with
his fiddle and guitar playing and his singing with Buck.

Don Rich was an awesome musician no doubt. The Buckarroos fll
apart after he was killed if I recall he died in a motorcycle
accident, my mom would know she loved all those guys, she has a
picture of her with Buck and Don taken in the early 60's at some
venue in Detroit they were playing.

Don Rich did die in a motorcycle accident. From what I read
Buck was very close to Don and when Don was so tragically
killed, at an early age, Buck went into a deep depression and
lost his desire to perform. It wasn't to many years later when
another young man came along, Dwight Yoakam, that Buck seemed to
enjoy performing again. What a treasure your mother has with
that photo of her and Buck and Don!

Yeah my mom likes Dwight Yoakem as well and he did revive Buck.
My mom has alot of treasured memorabilia of Buck Owens and his
Buckaroos. She also has a picture with Buck at the Crystal
Palace in Bakersfield, thats the first time I saw him perform it
was around 1994 before we moved backk here too Michigan. Buck
was a great entertainer, but my Mom said he was nothing like he
was in the 60's with Don Rich and his original Buckaroo's.

The fact that the Buckaroos were originally a 4 piece band says
alot for their sound and their talent. The Strangers are the
most versatile I think. Of course they are much larger and can
cover so many different styles.
The Cherokee Cowboys are certainly on the list. ray price has
always had the best of the best musicians !

I wouldn't say that they are the best, but Roy Clark's band is
one of the best around and still out there making a lot of
noise!

Mel Tillis too had a good tight fit ensemble of a country band
called the "State Siders" if you recall. And ofcourse the afore
mentioned... Buckaroos, Strangers, Cherokee Cowboys and Marty
Robbins band... And lastly one of my favorites was Hank
Thompson's Brazzo Valley Boys... Wonderful talent all around.

Not sure if most of you remember Curtis Potter.. This guy is an
excellent country singer... He used to front Hank Thompson's
Brazzos Valley Boys band years ago... but now he is a solo act
with his own band. Excellent vocalist . Western Swing is his
style. Checkout his web site: CurtisPotterCountry.com
He has a duet album with Willie Nelson as well.

All These Bands we Have mentioned were great bands. Mel Tillis
is another Great Legend that my mother admired. I recall she had
a record with a song he sang on it that I played too death. The
song was called "Middle Of The Night" I believe, I just loved
the lyrics too it and the beat. I have a 3 Cd set of Mel Tillis
with about 40 of his greatest hits but cannot find this song on
any Cd of Mel Tillis.
