I know some don't really consider him country but I like him.I
just bought a great new box set of unreleased concerts. It has
       Australia-1977 Japan-1981 and England-1986,incidentally Merle's
old session guitar player and Elvis's TCB band member James
       Burton is on all 3 shows.Their DVD's.

James Burton is one heck of a guitarist. He is on the Roy
Orbison "Black and White Night" Concert too. I like a few of
       John Denvers songs.

Charlie rich did to him on the CMA awards years ago.."THANK GOD
       I'M A COUNTRY BOY"..If that ain't COUNTRY, I'll......!!

Sorry, I always found him sappy and gave country a bad
association with that genre of folky schmaltzy stuff.
Personally I became a huge Charlie Rich fan when he set the
envelope on fire. Sorry, not to offend but he was never my cup
       of tea..

Of course helen and I mean no offense. John Denver had a
fabulous career and alot of songs that people still remember
today. I just didn't think he fit into the Country category,
much like what is happening today with Carrie Underwood et al...

And i agree with you on that comment..he was not a COUNTRY
SINGER....he just sang a great COUNTRY SONG!!! Just like Carrie
Underwood and faith Hill did when they first came on the
       scene...and then BAM..."SURPRISE...I'M A POP SINGER" IN SHEEP'S
       CLOTHING!!!!

Well Charlie Rich is one of my favorite Singers and Musicians as
well but he hisself wasnt always Country. He was more rockabilly
in his younger days. Not to mention I have heard some rhythm and
blues out of the Silver Fox as well.

Conway Twitty as well and many others. I think the point here is
the industry making "Country" out of what isn't or who isn't.
Many of the legends we listen to have done other projects in
other genres. Heck even Merle has done an easy listening/jazz
album. But these were not seen as the definition of Country as
was the case of John Denver being given a Country award for
music that was clearly not pure Country, but an early version of
the Country/Pop/Folk/whatever being pushed today. Conway did not
earn any Country awards for his rock sides. Only after his style
became Country was he recognized by that industry. Today it
would be a different story. I am just trying to make that point
       clear.
I am not saying I don't like anything non Country. I love alot
of different music. Motown. Oldies on and on. But what I am
trying to say is that each genre has it's place and definition
and Country has too often clouded its own identity by trying to
gain acceptance in the mainstream pop field, such as with
Denver, and many others up through the years leading up to the
       fiasco we have today.
Personally I believe "They" (and I am not really sure who "they"
are anymore) will do whatever to make money and shun any act
that does not conform to their money formula, be it looking good
in a video, or appealing to the kid fad scene. After working in
the music retail industry for many years, I saw firsthand the
neglect of the Country market over it's older or "catalog"
artists. No other genre did that, especially to this extent.
Country Music has traditionally suffered at the hands of the
mainstream market and often an underdog in the industy's eyes,
so they continue to try to compete and make it mainstream, which
they have done with the new artists of today. The problem is
that the music has changed so much that the true identity of
"Contry Music" is no longer there. I think that's what Jones is
       trying to say too.
I can go on and on about this and obviously you all know by now
how strongly I feel about it. Hopefully my point has come across
       here.

songs of his that I feel are very country,Take Me Home Country
       Roads,Back Home Again,Grandma's Feather Bed,Thank God I'm a
       Country Boy,Rocky Mountain High
