Greetings from Cyprus! I just thought I'd mention that Donald
Campbell's World Land Speed Record car (the one that reached 403
mph) is in the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, England. It
looks like new, and it's well worth a visit. The car was
originally designed, built and driven without a tail fin, but
one was added later because of stability problems. Exactly the
same happened with his Bluebird boat. So it seems that lateral
stability was a big issue for the designers back then, and they
were constantly evolving their ideas. Without the technology and
advanced knowledge we have today this must have been a very
difficult process. It's amazing they achieved what they did.

Does anyone know if the vertical tail fins on the Bluebird boat
and car were purely fixed surfaces, or did they incorporate a
movable rudder controlled by the pilot/driver? Also, I'm
wondering if either vehicle was developed by using a wind
tunnel? Since they were both designed in the 1950's, I'm
thinking that the rapid development of high-speed aircraft types
might have had an influence on the thinking used for the
       Bluebirds.

Respect to Jacqui for the work she's doing to bring us the news
       on the project!

I've read several books about aircraft design which all came to
the conclusion that the most difficult problems in design and
development of new types arose not from the aerodynamics but
from the propulsion systems. Apparently this has been the
thinking since the 1970's, particularly at leading companies
       like Lockheed.

Jacqui just messaged me to say that there's going to be more
news from the Development Team later today, and she hopes to put
it on the Forum straight away.

It must be very difficult to set a budget for a project like
this, where so many aspects of the work are still unknown. But
hopefully once the Feasibility Study is done the Team will have
a solid foundation to build on. Good luck everybody!

       succeed!

Does anyone know a good book that covers all the World Water
Speed Record attempts since the competition started? I'd like to
read up on this to see what problems each of the challengers
       faced.

Hello Nostromo! The most recent book on the subject is 'The
World Water Speed Record' by Roy Calley, published in 2014. It
gives a good modern approach to the subject. You might also want
to read a book with exactly the same title but written in 1976
by Leo Villa, who was Donald Campbell's 'right hand man', which
gives a more personal and very moving account of his first-hand
experiences. As of today, Amazon have both these books in stock,
in physical and Kindle form. All the main contenders for the
Record have Wiki pages, and some of the References on those can
be worth a look. But don't bother with the conspiracy theories!

Appreciate your advice Jacqui! I'll check out both those books.
